What has happened to Reba?!?!?

All things country!

Postby Garfield31 on December 28th, 2010, 6:07 pm

Reba used to be my idol but now i cant stand her. When she comes on the tv or on the radio i change it. Her last album, was an amazing album, maggie creek road was one of the best songs i heard from reba since the 90s, and its not about me being a reba fan who doesnt get that reba needs to change her style to stay current. Im 16, so i know what im talking about. I just dont understand how she can release a song like turn on the radio over maggie creek road. I have come to terms that reba is a sell out, and she thinks that will make her more popular but all it does is make her look desperate. I will get bombared with hate comments by alot of reba fans, but i dont think reba even deserves to carry the title, queen of country anymore, i understand that she cant set trends anymore but does she really have to follow them?!? Reba is so much better than carrie, miranda and taylor swift, she shouldnt have to follow them, its embarassing.

I live in England right now and I played my friends maggie creek road, and they loved it they had never heard anything like it before, it was a great song with a great story. They kept asking me when the music video is coming out, and at the time reba was supposed to release it. But when turn on the radio came out, i showed them the video, and they just laughed, because its embarrassing to see a country legend like reba produce such a mediocre song and TERRIBLE music video. They all didnt like it because like i said before they thought reba was trying too hard. Reba excels when she acts her age, its like a mother who wants to dress like her teenage daughter to be hip!!! The music video is the WORST video reba has ever made and one of the worst ones i have ever seen. What the hell was she thinking.

I saw a post on a reba news facebook page that had a similar opinion to mine, and it got me thinking.Ive lost all the respect ive ever had for reba. I am dissapointed to see reba stoop this low just to get a #1 hit, well you know what she succeeded, but she can consider me gone as a fan. Reba is not the woman she used to be, and i just cant stand her anymore.

O.K. Garfield31 or Jack, whatever name you go by. You had just posted the same thing on the Turn On The Radio thread. How many more places do you have to vent over what you perceive as a poor singles choice from Reba McEntire? After all, it is HER career and her decision to release another CD instead of charting with single #4 from the Keep On Loving You CD. I am not necessarily saying that since Turn On The Radio went to #1 that it would be defined as a career making song for McEntire. If you are going to rant and rave, please make sure it is in a constructive manner that would be used as a vehicle for thoughtful conversation. Thank you!
P.S.: I see you had just joined the 9513 today, so welcome aboard!

You added more to it? With the same verbiage on both Forum and Blog sections?

Your post would be much more pleasant to read if you would just follow simple grammar (capital letters, apostrophes, quotation marks, etc.), and if it weren't all in bold. But to the point: I do agree that "Turn On The Radio" is a terrible blot on her discography, and it is yet another attempt to market her to a 'younger' and more 'current' audience, which would be just fine if she had tried to combine artistic integrity with commercial considerations, as she has done so well in the past.

I don't agree that "Maggie Creek Road" is such a great song though; to me it sounds like a thinly veiled attempt to recapture the magic of "Fancy" and "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia", but it just completely misses the mark. I also think that "All The Women I Am", save for "Turn On The Radio", is a stronger effort than "Keep On Loving You".

I disagree COMPLETELY, i think that maggie creek road is better than fancy and the night the lights went out, it sounds current without trying too hard. And Keep on loving you was a MUCH better album than All the women i am.

When did Reba carry the title of the Queen of Country? When did Kitty Wells get dethroned?

I agree. This album is one of those half-full/half-empty affairs, but definitely better overall than the last one.

Sometime in the mid-1980s.

You don't know who Kitty Wells is? Do you listen to any country music besides Reba at all?

Fred Rose never called Patsy Cline the Queen of Country. That was Kitty Wells.

So you sometimes listen to one country singer.

The same way the rest of us do. I own albums by Jimmie Rodgers and he died 42 years before I was born.

Kitty Wells is a very important part of country music history, and as it is with society, one must first look to and learn from the past before making progress. I'm not a big fan of Kitty, but her single "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" is essential listening. I strongly prefer 80s/90s country to other eras of country music, but that doesn't make it OK to be oblivious to everything else.

Save for Patsy Cline and Reba, you seem completely ignorant when it comes to artists who debuted before circa 1993, and who aren't commercial forces in today's market.

Yes, it is necessary to call you ignorant when you made it very clear that it was ridiculous for us to expect for you to know who Kitty Wells is, "when shes lyk 90 yrs old". And also it's fair-weather fans like you who are more or less completely oblivious to anything outside of the mainstream today who piss me off. I bet that you only know of Barbara Mandrell from the 2006 tribute album Reba contributed "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool" to.

It's fine to not know a lot about country's heritage when you're 16, but please don't act is if it's a ridiculous notion to have basic knowledge of country music history. A little humility goes a long, long way.
