I Saw Jo Dee Messina!

Reviews, recaps, schedules, ect. for live shows.

I got to see Jo Dee Messina live today in a free concert downtown outside of "Crown Center" :D It was truly an amazing experience for me, and I really enjoyed it a lot... a little more even than when I saw Sara Evans in October '08.

First off Jo Dee's voice moved mountains, it was beautiful live as it is on record... maybe even better than on the records, even. She was stunning, and not just because she was glammed out in rhinestones. You could tell she was having so much fun, she kept having the audience sing and she talked to us about her upcoming album, Unmistakable. Included in the set of her big hits, she included new material: upcoming single "Get Up Again", "Unmistakable" (which is an amazing song), and "That's God" (which she wrote 6 weeks ago in Canada for her son, Noah, who was born in January 2009). The album is expected for March 2010.

Best part of it all though was that after her final song, "My Give a Damn's Busted", she gave not 1... not 2... but FIVE encore performances 8-) And she let people line up to sign their stuff... she commented on this one girl having her sign a Harry Potter book

It was one helluva night, I'll tell ya'll that! :D

She opened the show with "Heads Carolina, Tails California" and then sang a majority of her big hits and the new material, including: "Bye, Bye", "I'm Alright", "My Give a Damn's Busted", "Burn", "Lesson in Leavin", "That's God", "Unmistakable", "Get Up Again", "That's the Way" and "Downtime" plus some more in the encores

She said she wrote her new single "Get Up Again", because of some advice Charlie Daniels gave her: "Its not about how many times you fall, but how many times you get up again" ... which over the last 3 years definitely makes sense for her :)

And she did Journey and Kansas covers too, "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Carry on My Wayward Son"

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm surprised you liked it better than Sara Evans, though - I thought she was unsurpassable for you...

Sara Evans was different... I really enjoyed her performance because Sara Evans is my favorite artist - but Jo Dee really got the crowd going and the constant chuckling she does was really a treat  But as a record artist, I still prefer Sara Evans... but I don't know if anyone can outdo Jo Dee live - her voice moved mountains, and in ways that wouldn't be described as oversinging/screeching like Martina or Carrie

I also saw Sara Evans in an indoor theatre, and Jo Dee was outside... that may have made a difference

And the ending to the concert was the icing on the cake:

*applause*
Sara Evans: "God bless you everybody" *runs off stage*
//////

*applause*
Jo Dee Messina: *chuckles and begins "Bring on the Rain" as encore*

Then she asked if anybody wanted to hear a song she didn't perform, so she sang "Dare to Dream", "Biker Chick", and a few other songs

I don't remember being particularly moved by her live vocals, but I can't remember ever seeing a bad live performance from her either. It's neat to compare two ladies stage presence and interaction with the audience like Sara Evans and Jo Dee Messina - both of them hit the scene around the same time and then had huge hits on their second albums, and they've always been similar to me. I'm glad Jo Dee Messina entertained you - she seemed like a genuinely nice woman who is doing what she loves when I got to meet her. Same thing with Terri Clark.

I think I'd prefer Sara Evans as a recording artist too, because I like more of her songs - but she's never made a record as fine as I'm Alright either, so it's a tough choice ...
