I looked through my avatars -- and the sizes range from 8-20kb, and the limit is only 6 kb : /

Is there a possibility of bumping it up a little?

change them to .gif files. .jpeg files are much larger.

I went ahead and set the maximum size to 150px after I noticed some of them getting a little large. I don't understand the desire to put images in signatures, but hopefully that size will work for everyone. Oh, and if you're not interested in viewing signatures, there's an option to turn them off in your User Control Panel.
