Last great movie you saw ...

Off-topic and miscellaneous discussion not pertaining to country music.

Whip It is really fun. Also, remember back when The Ugly Truth came out and women were excited because we were finally going to get out Seth Rogan-esque comedy, but then it actually came out and was more sexist than Knocked Up and The Hang Over combined? This is the woman centered (even feminist, yay!) comedy with sweat, blood and beer. At one point, nervous about her first bout, Babe Ruthless (Ellen Page) jokingly asks Rosa Sparks and Maggie Mayhem "Has anyone every thrown up on the track?" to which they matter of factly reply in the affirmative. The romantic b-plot is uncessary, though it is refreshing to see it end with the female lead just walking away without having to find a reason to forgive the guy or a new guy. Its nice to see a movie which is not afraid to leave its ingenue single. It was also cool how instead of showing the beauty queen mother as the villian they instead show Bliss/Babe transforms into someone more willing to embrace the side of her which is like her mother and how it is that which makes her a roller derby girl.
Things about the movie that bugged:
1. What is up with the Ween-meets-ironic-1950's-stylings musical choices? The only realy authentic musical moment in the movie was when Babe and Pash were re-writing Jolene as Bodine. This is roller derby--it calls for agressive music. They couldn't tie in the upcoming Lita Ford album?
2. There is a great line at the end of the training montauge when Coach Razor tells Babe "Its a contact sport, eventually I am going to need you to make contact." That doesn't ever happen. She learns how to take a block better, but she never actually throws a hit. Probably because:
3. It was hard to buy Ellen Page as a Roller Derby chick. C'mon, she weighs about 3 pounds. It would have made more sense to make her to bookish best friend and make Alia Shawkat the derby girl. Alia Shawkat actually has the frame to throw people around. And, frankly, its a bit depressing that even in a feminist movie the rounder woman has to play the best friend/side kick.

This week, my cable is not installed in my new apartment yet, so I bought some really good DVDs that I love:

1. V for Vendetta: Alan Moore+ The Wichowsky Brothers=AWESOME. Killer sword play and fight tricks. But also, an amazing plot full of government cover-ups and moral ambiguity. Imagine a powerful statement against totalitarian rule wherein the most honest and moral character is the cop going after the protagionist and you have Alan Moore. (I heart Alan Moore).

2. Dogma: This Kevin Smith film is often cast as Anti-God, but it is actually very pro-God. Basically two fallen angels find a loophole that lets them get back into Heaven with the minor side affect that they will destroy all existance. The Last Scion (Jesus' great, great, great....Grand-Neice) who is a Catholic rapidly loosing her faith, The Muse, The Voice of God, The 13th Apostle Rufus (left out of the Bible because he's black) and two prophets (Jay and Silent Bob) have to stop them. It really funny and profoundly moving and a reminder of that bizarre time when Affleck and Damon were unstoppably good. (What the hell happened Affleck?)

3. Tropic Thunder: Seriously, just watch this one--you will laugh so hard you will pee your pants.

Just bought that one myself. Quite funny indeed.

Last night, I watched The Queen, which is definitely one of the best movies of the new millennium.

Have you seen Frost/Nixon?

My favorite line Tropic Thunder:
Kurt Lazerus: So, we're good now?
Alpa Chino: No.

I watched that on HBO about a year ago. There was nothing else on. I didn't think I would like it very much but I was pleasantly surprised. It was very good.

I used to think that was true, but Marc Anthony is the same level of talent that he used to be and Jennifer Gardner has started to suck more.

Alan Moore always eschews the easy outs.

I bought Zodiac last night. Its another one of those really character driven movies that just lets really talented actors act. Its about all the people who get swept up in solving the Zodiac case, how it affects their lives and how they cope with it or get away from it. Also, Robert Downey Junior is REALLY hot. So hot he can be hot through really cheesy blackface (Tropic Thunder) or a gross 70's hippie beard and flopsweat (Zodiac). Sorry, groupie moment.

W. was actually a good movie. It was funny and touching and far more sympathic to Bush than you would expect Oliver Stone to be.

Tonight I get to watch the story of a wealthy family who lost everything and the one son who had no choice but to keep them altogether. Okay, its not a movie, but still a kick ass DVD set.

Speaking of Michael Sheen, The Damned United was interesting and I don't even like Soccer.

Last movie I have seen is Hangover and It is just amazing one!!In a time of overstuffed 140-minute comedies, this is a breath of refreshing air. I can't explain how much I enjoyed this movie, and how much I continue to enjoy it no matter how many times I've seen it. It's simply the funniest movie I've seen for years, possibly decades.
