Top tens: Dolly Parton

Postby Peter Durward Harris on August 14th, 2008, 5:15 am

At a different time and in a different mood, I might come up with another list, but if I listed my top 200 Dolly songs there would still be a lot of brilliant omissions.

1 - My blue ridge mountain boy
2 - My Tennessee mountain home
3 - Chicken every Sunday
4 - Applejack
5 - Do I ever cross your mind?
6 - Coat of many colors
7 - Love is like a butterfly
8 - Yellow roses
9 - Touch your woman
10 - Cracker Jack

I like Razor X's list - It about matches what I would list

Unfortunately, Dolly has probably made more bad recordings than any other great artist I can recall. A list of the worst of Dolly would be an entertaining exercise

I'd say Dolly is one of the most consistently good artists there is.

She's had some missteps along the way and ventured a little too far into crossover territory for a while, but I wouldn't go far as to say that she's made a lot of bad recordings. I'm not a big fan of her 1980 album Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. I'd say that is her weakest. 1979's Great Balls Of Fire is not a favorite either, but it's better than Dolly, Dolly, Dolly. Her biggest commercial failure is probably 1987's Rainbow, which is a pure pop album with no pretense of being even remotely related to country. If you accept it for what it is, it's really not a bad album. Not great, but not terrible either. I'd say her worst song by far is 1993's Romeo. That's the one song she's done that I could never get to like despite repeated listenings. But all in all, the missteps are just a blip in her 40-year and counting career.

Dolly Dolly Dolly is actually one of my favourite pop-sounding albums. Same with Great Balls Of Fire and Rainbow. But then again, I've always loved Dolly's pop albums.

Well, that's a lot of changes. Dolly recorded "What a heartache" for three different albums (Rhinestone, Eagle when she flies, Halos and horns) so I guess she loves it.

You really need to listen to the rest of Dolly's discography. I'm pretty sure you'd like the majority of it, and you're missing out on some great music.

Your list IS very heavy on the Backwoods Barbie CD. And while I like that album a helluva lot myself, Dolly has so much more in her catalog that's superior to those songs.
