Top Tens: Brooks & Dunn

Postby Drew on August 10th, 2008, 8:12 am

10. I May Never Get Over You
9. My Heart's Not A Hotel
8. Only In America
7. That's What It's All About
6. Cowboy Town - Not sure why this hasn't been a single off their newest album, as its the best track in my opinion, and would also chart very well.
5. Go West
4. I Believe
3. Again
2. Red Dirt Road - One of the first country songs I remember hearing, still love it just as much.
1. Memory Town - No idea why this wasn't released as a single, it's lyrics are just incredible in drawing an emotional picture of all the various memories and Ronnie sounds as good as ever.

I don't know if I've said so on the forum here yet, but I think Ronnie Dunn is the best male vocalist in country music right now - and this is not a new development either. So my favorite B&D songs are the ones that Ronnie just nails you to the wall with.

She Used To Be Mine
I'll Never Forgive My Heart
A Man This Lonely
We'll Burn That Bridge
That Ain't No Way To Go
Whiskey Under The Bridge
She's Not The Cheatin Kind
Every River
Believe
and of course Neon Moon

1. South of Santa Fe
2. Neon Moon
3. Red Dirt Road - reminds me of my dad in a big way
4. Believe
5. Ballad of Jerry Jeff Walker - one of the best songs on the current album
6. Born and Raised in Black and White - I like this one because it's an actual duet, and not dominated by Ronnie
7. My Maria - this was their current big hit when I saw them in concert. I was ten, it was my first concert, I was close to the stage, and Ronnie actually waved to me!
8. Caroline
9. She's Not the Cheating Kind
10. Brand New Man

I hated, hated, hated, B&D when they first came out (rather I hated the "Boot Scootin' Boogie" stuff) but they gradually got me with Ronnie Dunn's passionate singing. I now can stomach "Boot Scootin'."

10. She's Not The Cheatin' Kind
9. That Ain't No Way To Go
8. Every River (a great Kim Richey song)
7. That's What It's All About
6. How Long Gone
5. It's Getting Better All The Time
4. Again (a great Radney Foster song that Ronnie sings the hell out of)
3. Red Dirt Road
2. Ain't Nothin' 'Bout You
1. Believe

As you can see from my list, I prefer most of the ballads from the duo. I've never much liked Kix's singing. Too "Kermit THE frog" for me. "Ain't Nothin' 'Bout You" is what got me to enjoy the band and "Believe" is one of the best vocal performances of all-time.

01 Red Dirt Road - possibly the best song they've ever recorded
02 Again - even though the original is better, they do an awesome job covering it.
03 You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone
04 The Ballad Of Jerry Jeff Walker - Only song on their latest that I could honestly say I Liked
05 Ain't Nothin' 'Bout You - Love, Love, Loved this song.
06 She's Not The Cheatin' Kind
07 My Maria
08 Believe - Though I grew a little tired of it by the end of it's run
09 It's Getting Better All The Time
10 THat's What She Gets For Loving Me

I've heard Brooks & Dunn described as the Mariah Carey of country music, and I agree with that assessment. It's unbelievable how they've had so many smash hits that have been utterly forgotten two months after they hit number one. It saddens me to listen to a song like "Neon Moon" and think about what might have been.

I have B&D's first CD, and it still holds up pretty well. It's really too bad that "Boot Scootin' Boogie" was the massive hit from that batch of songs, because there are some real gems there. I wonder what they would have turned into if "Neon Moon", "Brand New Man" or "Lost and Found" had been as big a hit song.

1. Brand New Man
2. Lost And Found
3. Still In Love With You
4. If That's The Way You Want It
5. Husbands And Wives
6. Neon Moon
7. A Few Good Rides Away
8. I've Got A Lot To Learn
9. I May Never Get Over You
10. Mexican Minutes

B&D have always been a case of diminishing returns with me - I've liked each album just a little less than the one before. I agree Ronnie Dunn has a great voice, though.

I've actually got the solo album Kix put out before he joined up with Ronnie, which isn't bad.

I like all their music but their first two albums were outstanding so most of my favorites come from them

In no particular order

My next broken heart
Neon moon
Boot scootin' boogie
Lost and found
Rock my world little country girl
Texas women don't stay lonely long
We'll burn that bridge
Hard workin' man
Little Miss Honky-tonk
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
