Career Albums

All things country!

Postby Clemson Brad on September 29th, 2008, 10:18 pm

I thought this would be a fun topic to do. Name some Artists, and with them, state what their best CD was...or "Career" CD. The one CD they realeased that stands out as their best work.

Gary Allan - Smoke Rings in the Dark - No brainer

Tim McGraw - Set This Circus Down

George Strait - It Just Comes Natural(May get flamed for this. I have a TON and TON of Strait CD, but "It Just Comes Natural" to me is the one that I enjoy the most)

Brad Paisley - Part II (Who Needs Pictures a close second)

Kenny Chesney - No Shoes, No Shirts, No Problems (I also loved "Road and the Radio" and "When the Sun Goes Down")

Gretchen Wilson - All Jacked Up (I LOVE THIS CD!! Its too bad she is struggling so bad right now)

Keith Urban - Golden Road

Bruce Robison - Wrapped

Charlie Robison - Life of the Party

Chris Knight - The Jealous Kind (I was rather dissapointed with his new one. need to give it another listen)

For Gary Allan, it's a tossup between Smoke Rings In The Dark and Tough All Over, although I prefer the former. He's not done yet, so the possibility is still there that he may top those.

I thought the latest Chris Knight album was pretty solid and enjoyed it over all. Look for a review within the next couple of days.

"Tough All Over" was also a damn good CD. He had a 4 CD Stretch with Smoke, Alright Guy, See if I Care, and Tough that was pretty dang impressive.

Good topic and good choices. I'll add some more tomorrow, but I'm fixin' to head to bed. Here's a few quick thoughts, though:

I'm in agreement on the Gary Allan, Tim McGraw and Charlie Robison albums, although some will give the nod to Tough All Over for Allan.

As for Bruce Robison, Country Sunshine gives Wrapped a run for its money, but again, I think you made the right choice.

None of Chris Knight's albums have toppled his self-titled debut for me, but The Trailer Tapes came awful close.

Collin Raye's "Career Album" would have to be "Extremes" even though a case could be made for "I Think About You." Those were the 3rd and 4th of 5 straight platinum-selling albums.

With Bruce it is so tough to pick his best CD, because they are all equally incredibly well written and well crafted. I was torn between "Wrapped" and "Long Way Home from Anywhere." I love "The New World" I still need to get a copy, but the CD just shows that Bruce is as good as he ever was, if not better with every cd release. That is something MANY artists can not say.

I vote There's More Where That Came From for Lee Ann Womack and Fearless for Terri Clark.

Even though it's certainly not my favourite album from her, "For My Broken Heart" is what I'd call Reba's career record. It's most fans' favourite, and probably the most critically acclaimed of all her albums.

"Breathe" is definitely Faith's career album, even though that one isn't my favourite either. It's her biggest seller, and the album she'll be remembered for.

"Come On Over" by Shania Twain. 'Nuff said.

"I Am Shelby Lynne" by... Surprise, Shelby Lynne. It's considered her breakthrough album, and it earned her a Grammy for best new artist. (even though she had been in the buisiness for well over ten years, and had already released 5 albums before it.)

Personally I'd call these their career records:

Reba: "Feel The Fire"

Faith Hill: "It Matters To Me" (Or, depending on my mood, sometimes "Fireflies".)

Shania Twain: "Up!"

Shelby Lynne: "Restless" (Though "Though All Over" is a strong runner-up.)

For Dixie Chicks, I'll argue that "Home" is their career album, at least for now. Here's a few others:

Reckless Kelly: "Wicked Twisted Road"

Robert Earl Keen: "Gringo Honeymoon"

Dwight Yoakam: "Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room"

Kelly Willis: "What I Deserve"

Marty Stuart: "This One's Gonna Hurt You"

Lucinda WIlliams: "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road"

I'd go with Taking The Long Way as the Dixie Chicks' career album.

There's still a couple of albums I haven't listened to in Lyle Lovett's catalog, but for my money, you can't beat Step Inside This House, although I don't know if it counts since it's a covers project.

Here's a few more:

Randy Rogers Band - Rollercoaster
Rodney Hayden - Down The Road
Guy Clark - Old No. 1
Kris Kristofferson - Kristofferson

I'd go with Home for Chicks and Country Sunshine from Bruce Robison.

And, its probably a cliche, The Houston Kid, Rodney Crowell.

Dierk's was his first one (My favorite of his three albums, I don't count the greatest hits with only two new songs

I agree with you. Dierks first album is wonderful and my favorite. Though I could see how people would argue that his other two albums were his best. Each album he has made I have found fantastic.

I think Dierks' career album will come after he stops getting played or worrying about getting played--probably the first album after he loses his first record deal.

Career record - not necessarily the same thing as biggest seller or best album (although often the same)

Gary Allan - SMOKE RINGS IN THE DARK
JOHNNY CASH AT FOLSOM PRISON
Willie Nelson - RED HEADED STRANGER
Rodney Crowell - DIAMONDS AND DIRT
Reba McEntire - WHOEVER'S IN NEW ENGLAND
Gretchen Wilson - HERE FOR THE PARTY
Marty Stuart - THE PILGRIM

I really shouldn't bother listing Wilson - an artist should have released at least five albums before making this assessment

Dolly Parton - The Grass Is Blue
