Favorite Lines In Lyrics

All things country!

Postby Chris D on September 13th, 2008, 3:58 pm

I was just listening to "Doubting Thomas" by Nickel Creek from their album Why Should The Fire Die? (A Stellar album by the way), and the chorus stood out to me as some very good writing , especially the last line:

"I'm a doubting Thomas,
I took a promise,
But I do not feel safe,
Oh me of little faith."

The song has a sad sound of someone who feels like they've failed, and is very beautiful, and the lyrics are very powerful.

So what are some of your favorite lyrics in songs? Maybe verses or individual lines or whatever.

Oh wow, I have tons. This is a great discussion idea too. So I'll have to make several posts to this thread. But my favorite line from a song I've heard today is from Reba's 'Whoever's In New England' ...

When the icy wind blow through you
Remember that it's me
Who feels the cold,
most of all

I know, I'll be posting many times too, I just now thought of another great one.

From "Probably Wouldn't Be This Way" by leAnn Rimes from This Woman:

Sometimes I see you standing there
Sometimes I feel an angel's touch
Sometimes I feel that I'm so lucky to have had the chance to love this much
God gave me a moment's grace
'Cause if I'd never seen your face
I probably wouldn't be this way

The song is heartbreaking, but this particular chorus just brings the whole point of the song into focus, and it is one of the best performances from her.

There's blood in the kitchen
In the shape of a sin
There's a ship in the water
But it ain't coming in
There's a fall of an angel
At the end of a show
But who's gonna save my soul
Its a hard road.

I was just listening to a song I hadn't heard in a bit and forgot how much I liked the chorus to it. This is from Rhett Akins' "More Than Everything":

He shows the rivers where to run
Struck the match that lit the sun
He writes the songs the birds sing
Makes the flowers bloom in spring
But of all the things he's done
He made me for you and you for me
And that's more than everything

Also George Strait's "You'll Be There" always gets to me:

Hope is an anchor, and love is a ship
Time is the ocean, and life is a trip
You don't know where you're going, ‘till you know where you're at
And if you can't read the stars, well you better have a map
A compass and a conscience, so you don’t get lost at sea
Or on some lonely island, where no one wants to be

From the beginning of creation, I think our maker had a plan
For us to leave these shores, and sail beyond the sand
And let the good light guide us, through the waves and the wind
To the beaches in a world, where we have never been
And we'll climb up on a mountain y'all, we'll let our voices ring
Those who've never tried it, they'll be the first to sing

Whoa, my, my
I'll see you on the other side
If I make it
And it might be a long hard ride
But I’m gonna take it
Sometimes it seems that I don’t have a prayer
I let the weather take me anywhere
But I know that I wanna go
Where the streets are gold
‘Cause you'll be there
Oh, my , my

You don’t bring nothing with you here
And you can’t take nothing back
I ain’t never seen a hearse, with a luggage rack
So I've torn my knees up prayin’
Scarred my back from fallin’ down
Spent so much time flying high, 'till I’m face first in the ground
So if you're up there watchin’ me, would you talk to God and say
Tell Him I might need a hand to see you both someday

Dierks Bentley:

One of these days I'm gonna cross that ocean,
Some sweet angel will set me free
And they'll tell my stories,
Sing a song about glory,
And read Psalm 23
When I reach the banks of that distant shore,
Where I won't miss you anymore

and Josh Turner:
Soulmate
Until the end of time
You're my soulmate
I'll love you till I get to heaven's gate
And if I go first sweetheart
I'll wait
'Cause I know I'll never find another

Very nice, another great song!

Honestly the entire songs "Keep You" and "Very Last Country Song" by Sugarland are amazing lyrically to me:

"Lived louder than my voice. Struggled through a stranger,
He loved me until I loved you even more.
It's a bitter sweet victory,
Lovin' someone else who wanted me.

Now I can't laugh, can't cry,
And I can't run, can't hide.
You get used to the pain, and numb to the sting
Till you can't feel anything." -Keep You

The entire song "Radar" by Britney Spears:

Confidence is a must
Cockiness is a plus
Edginess is a rush
Edges I like em rough
A man with the midas touch
Intoxicate me I’m a lush
Stop you’re makin me blush
People are lookin at us

I don’t think you know (know)
Im checkin you so hard
so hard
wonder if you know you’re on my radar
On My radar
yep I notice you
i know it’s you I’m choosin
don’t wanna lose you
you On my radar
On My radar
and When you walk (when you walk)
and When you talk (when you talk)
I get the tingle
I wanna mingle
That’s what i want
Hey Listen baby
Turn up the fader
tryna make ya understand
Ya on my radar

Long Time Gone:

"Now they sound tired but they don't sound haggard / They got money but they don't have cash / They got junior but they don't have Hank..."

Drive In Movie:

"And out across the rugged hills / The dust blows the wind wails / Sunbleached skulls and empty shells / Broken men with tales to tell / And I would be / One of them..."

I dunno what lush means, I don't write the songs... and to be honest, I can't understand some of the words in the song, but if you listen to it, it like flows together so well and its like a fantastic pop song

Britney kicks hiney ;)

The first verse in "New Hometown" by Sara Evans is amazing (the whole song is beautiful too)

Every day we walk right past
All the concrete and the glass
I don't know where we're going
I hardly ever see your face
And there's not enough space
For all the love we should be growing

Honestly, the first time I heard the album, I didn't really like it, but after hearing so much great stuff about it here, I gave it another try, and I love it!

And Razor X, thanks for clearing up the "lush" question. xD
