This is in no way conclusive, and should not be construed to be conclusive. I am not confirming that this is conclusive. Seriously, I'm probably forgetting 300 people that should be on here. By the way, are we talking just country? ;-) Also, keep in mind: these are personal preferences. And it's not conclusive!

10. Kelly Willis
9. Trisha Yearwood
8. Patty Loveless
7. Alison Krauss
6. Mary Chapin Carpenter
5. Natalie Mains/Dixie Chicks
4. Patsy Cline
3. Gretchen Peters
2. Loretta Lynn
1. Matraca Berg

So, did you say it's not conclusive? ;)
Yes, let's stick to just country for now.

I'm loving this forum by the way. I've been a regular poster on the Amazon.com country board, and I have high hopes for this board!

Man, this one is tough. I'll take the inconclusive route and list a few of my favorites along with a few others that maybe haven't been around long enough, or I haven't listened to enough, to become favorites quite yet, but I've been enjoying anyways. I hope that's not cheating, and if it is--sue me.

Elizabeth Cook
Dolly Parton
Alison Krauss
Sunny Sweeney
Patty Griffin
Ashton Shepherd
Loretta Lynn

While I loved the 100 Greatest Women feature over at Country Universe, I did strongly disagree with Kevin's top ten, so I'll make my own. I'm excluding any female who was not primarily a singer.

10. Emmylou Harris
9. Barbara Mandrell
8. Reba McEntire
7. Maybelle Carter
6. Shania Twain
5. Dolly Parton
4. Tammy Wynette
3. Kitty Wells
2. Patsy Cline
1. Loretta Lynn

I like your list, Drew.
That is, of course excluding the ever screaming Carrie Underwood.

I don't think Carrie Underwood's music has been awe-inspiring country music, but she definitely gets bonus points for the way she has handled herself from American Idol through today. I really think she's a great person and one of the best role models out there right now. I even like Taylor Swift's debut album to be honest, even though I know a lot of ppl on here hate her music and what she's done to female country, but I'll reserve putting her on a top 10 until she has put out at least 2 good albums.

Well, to be honest, as far as role models go, I'd put Julianne Hough over Carrie.
And Taylor Swift's voice is so horrible, it almost makes me cry. And her songs are all syrupy puppy love.

Emmylou Harris just released an album y'all, and the title track opens with "I spent a life time making up my mind to be/More than the measure of what I thought others could see." We don't need Carrie, Julianne or Taylor for a role model.

And it's a great album -- one of the very few this year that I couldn't wait to be released so I could buy it right away.

I haven't gotten a chance to buy Emmylou's latest yet, but I plan on doing so on my soon-to-be shopping spree on amazon.
There has only been one album I've really looked forward to this year, and that was "Backwoods Barbie" by Dolly Parton.
But my favourite of the year is one I stumbled upon accidentally, Shelby Lynne's newest album. It re-awoke my passion for Shelby.
