Jessica Simpson On Opry

All things country!

Postby farmersdaughter on September 6th, 2008, 10:14 pm

Two words....train wreck....it's so bad that she had to compensate with a dress that makes you wonder if the Opry could see their first nipslip. The second song she sang was just even worst and made Taylor Swift sound a teeny tiny bit good.

However - if your ears can stand hearing her, I do recommend watching the episode repeats as Patty Loveless really lit a fire with selections off her new album. Crystal Shawanda got a better response & got surprised backstage with a visit from Loretta Lynn.

After watching it, I gave it a 3/5 star rating

I am actually quite impressed that she did sing it live, sure it wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't that bad either -- I'd have expected lip-synching with her, but she didn't do that and I liked that aspect of it

So, overall not too bad... and she's never looked better; her hair and outfit were adorable (specially the hair)

Only real bad thing was she sings very awkwardly - her head flies around like its trying to fall off butt a threads holding it in place XD

EDIT: I also looked up her album's track listing... she has a duet w/ Dolly on it! <3 I wonder what that will be like

Does she get booed? Because that would be the only reason for me to watch it.

No, she isn't booed

Oh, and can sum1 tell me what is it she yells at the end of her song? She says "Thank you.. <insert here>" - what was that last part? I couldn't make it out... ;)

A very vocally blah performance made memorable by her head and jaw convulsions and her crazy eyes.

The backup singers looked bored.

I will never be able to give Jessica Simpson an unbiased assessment because my sophomore college roommate was a huge fan of hers and tried to imitate her physically, vocally, behaviorally, and intellectually. Said roommate was also an alcoholic witch.

I think she said "I got chills."

She got a few cheers (but don't worry, no big standing ovation, encore, or anything major), but then they cut straight to Nan Kelly who says a lucky fan gets to meet her and some girl & her mom got to meet her backstage. Crystal Shawanda (I don't know if I am spelling that right or not...) had a great debut, even better than Jessica Simpson. It was more innocent and sweet with her story as compared to Jessica's.

I would say "Well honey, put on a sweater...." (joking here...)

I watched her live performance of the song from The View and it sounded better...

I think the nerves were the factor in the Opry performance, hence the breathing

The Opry will not allow lip-synching. It's a radio program. If peformers are going to lip-synch, then what is the point?

OK, that was even worse than I expected. Why the F did I turn off Emmylou Harris for that? I thought she was having an epileptic seizure when she started shaking her head. Did you see that old geezer in the audience grinning from ear to ear? It wasn't because of her singing!

The applause was polite and nothing more. The reviews of her live show have been pretty scathing. I expect the album will chart high and then quickly drop like a lead balloon. The big question is how long do we have to put with her before she finally pulls the plug on her "country" career and goes away?

She is not going to return to pop, she says

And I prefer her country over her pop

EDIT: Oh, and saying she's not allowed to lip-synch... that makes sense for country music - because I have never heard of a country music lip-singer... but I just know that pop singers low lip-singing

I don't know if she did it, because I didn't like her before she went country, but artists like Rihanna and Britney get away with it

I saw this spectacle (the second show) from the second row. Some thoughts from someone who has never seen Jessica Simpson:

1. Jessica's stage mannerisms are almost comically exaggerated.

2. The best way I can describe her choreography is that she leads with her breasts. Seriously, it looked like she was shoving her boobs into the face of some invisible guy standing in front of her.

3. Despite what other people have written, she is not a bad technical vocalist. In fact, she's not even comparable to Taylor Swift.

4. She had lots of adoring fans in the audience, and there was certainly no booing. While her band was setting up, the backrows of the Opry House emptied out as there was a mad dash of teenage girls to the front of the stage. All of the Jessica fans made for a pretty dead and uninformed crowd during the rest of the show. Loretta Lynn did get a fitting reception, even if her songs ("Don't Come Home A Drinkin'," "When the Tingle Becomes a Chill," "Your Squaw is on the Warpath") didn't receive the cheers of recognition that they deserved.

Lip-synching does go one sometimes but not on a radio program like the Opry. Think about it: what's the point of a lip-synched performance on the radio?

I had wondered if there would be an attempt to pack the crowd with her people to ensure that she got a decent audience response, but I didn't think they'd have the clout to pull off such a thing at the Opry. Or did people just have enough sense to leave on their own when she was about to come on, leaving room for the Jessica fans?

But it was also a T.V. performance as well - or else how was there a video of the singing ?

The point is that you don't have to hear Jess' "live" voice.

The television aspect is secondary. The Opry is, first and foremost, a radio program. It goes on for about 5 hours at a time. Only a small portion of it (1 hour usually) is televised.

I didn't know that

A little history lesson that any country music fan should know....the Opry started in 1925 as a radio program. The WSM 650 AM began the broadcast after a show featuring Opera music. The announcer, George D Hay said "you were just listening to the Grand Opera, but now you are going to listen to the Grand Ole Opry." (paraphrasing that statement there). The Grand Ole Opry has really made a lot of advancements over the years. The were televised on TNN until TNN changed to Spike. After a little while off the tv airwaves, it came back to TV on Great American Country. They also got in the tech age and put their information on their website www.opry.com

The Opry is featured on WSM Radio station - 650 AM on Friday nights, Saturday nights, and even Tuesday nights for a period of time. Starting in 2009, they will have a Thursday night Opry listed. On Saturday nights, there are two shows. In order to make up for the time they are not live on stage between 9-9:30 (Central Time), WSM will broadcast a segment with songs and interviews of artists each week. You can listen to this live on www.wsmonline.com and they also have their archives.

Another little factoid....you do not hear Nan Kelly's interviews or appearances on the radio that you do on tv. Keith Bilbry, or Eddie Stubbs, or Mike Terry are announcers for different portions of the Opry. While she is interviewing on tv, the radio will be playing what is live on stage at the moment, whether it is another song being sung, etc. I usually listen to the radio broadcast first and then watch the tv portion later. However, last night I ended up watching the tv portion because I was cleaning house while it was on the tv.

Ok...that's a tiny little lesson for you this Sunday afternoon. Class dismissed. :D
