The television aspect is secondary. The Opry is, first and foremost, a radio program. It goes on for about 5 hours at a time. Only a small portion of it (1 hour usually) is televised.
I didn't know that
A little history lesson that any country music fan should know....the Opry started in 1925 as a radio program. The WSM 650 AM began the broadcast after a show featuring Opera music. The announcer, George D Hay said "you were just listening to the Grand Opera, but now you are going to listen to the Grand Ole Opry." (paraphrasing that statement there). The Grand Ole Opry has really made a lot of advancements over the years. The were televised on TNN until TNN changed to Spike. After a little while off the tv airwaves, it came back to TV on Great American Country. They also got in the tech age and put their information on their website
www.opry.comThe Opry is featured on WSM Radio station - 650 AM on Friday nights, Saturday nights, and even Tuesday nights for a period of time. Starting in 2009, they will have a Thursday night Opry listed. On Saturday nights, there are two shows. In order to make up for the time they are not live on stage between 9-9:30 (Central Time), WSM will broadcast a segment with songs and interviews of artists each week. You can listen to this live on
www.wsmonline.com and they also have their archives.
Another little factoid....you do not hear Nan Kelly's interviews or appearances on the radio that you do on tv. Keith Bilbry, or Eddie Stubbs, or Mike Terry are announcers for different portions of the Opry. While she is interviewing on tv, the radio will be playing what is live on stage at the moment, whether it is another song being sung, etc. I usually listen to the radio broadcast first and then watch the tv portion later. However, last night I ended up watching the tv portion because I was cleaning house while it was on the tv.
Ok...that's a tiny little lesson for you this Sunday afternoon. Class dismissed.
