Brooks and Dunn + Barack Obama

All things country!

Postby Matt C on August 28th, 2008, 9:01 pm

"Only in America" was played at the end of Obama's acceptance speech tonight.

Does anyone else find this odd? "Only in America" was George W. Bush's campaign theme song in 2004. Does this mean that it's now Obama's theme song? Besides the song's obvious association with Bush (who Obama spent most of the speech ripping and trying to tie to John McCain) the song really doesn't fit his demographic, and campaigns usually have to obtain permission from artists before using songs in this manner. Would this have been granted after B&D provided theme songs for both of GWB's campaigns?

Anyone read anything about this?

I don't think anything should be read into it, and that the song just fit the performance. In his opening biographic video he said: "my story could only have happened in this country", which correlates well to "Only In America" by Brooks & Dunn.

It's a patriotic song. I also heard "Born In The USA" there too. But I was surprised to see the country song used. But it does fit the tome of the whole speech. I actually think "Change Is Gonan Come" could've been used too.

I guess we'll be hearing Kristy Lee Cook's version of God Bless The USA at some stage throughout the election then. I shudder at that potential thought.

As long as she's out there singing it, I'd have no problem with it!
