I'll give a quick rundown of tonight's CMT Giants show w/ Alan Jackson, but beware! There were some "surprises" that I will pretty much spoil... so if you wanna wait til the show airs, don't read any further.
"Five O'Clock Somewhere" - Brad Paisley - A solid performance, but it isn't my favorite AJ song. Brad did a good job on it and some great pickin' as well. There was a twist towards the end, where Brad sang "at a moment like this, I can't help but wonder.... what would ALAN JACKSON do?" And Alan came out and finished off the song! Awesome stuff.
"Gone Country" - Miranda Lambert and Lee Ann Womack - An interesting choice for these two ladies, but still good. They had to repeat the song because of technical difficulties on the first run-through. It seemed kinda like an awkward karaoke session.
"When Somebody Loves You" - Martina McBride - This might have been the best performance of the night. A great song choice, dipping a little deeper into AJ's catalog. Martina is the best of the best when it comes to vocal ability.
"Don't Rock The Jukebox" - Dierks Bentley - Great song for Dierks. He did great on it, switched a few lyrics up, made it his own... awesome!
"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" - George Strait - You can't go wrong with George, and he delivered with an emotional performance. Another winner.
"Drive" - Taylor Swift - A good song choice, and she did a serviceable job, but probably had the weakest vocal performance of the night. Still enjoyable.
"Chattahoochee" and "Remember When" - Alan Jackson - Great performances... there was an extra heartfelt feeling in "Remember When" which probably came from the fact his three daughters and wife were sitting in the balcony above him. It will be interesting to see if that feeling translates onto the TV performance.
"Country Boy" - Alan Jackson, George Strait, Brad Paisley, and Dierks Bentley - I was really hoping they were gonna bust out "Where I Come From" for the finale, but I guess they had to settle on the latest single. It's a cheesy song, but a fun time.
Other appearances included:
Hank Williams, Jr.
George Jones
Brooks & Dunn (taped)
George W. Bush (taped)
Diane Sawyer (taped)
Carrie Underwood (taped)
Jimmy Buffett (taped)
Overall, a great night of country music in the Ryman, honoring one of country's best. I will definitely be taping this show when it comes out.
