Man, for those of you who may be unfamiliar with the catalog of Wade Bowen, please take my advice and become very familiar with the new CD that is out today. I was able to attend a small, seemingly private event last night in Dallas, where only about 30 people were allowed into a small club (it was intended to be small and intimate, so 30 was just right) to hear cuts from the new, If We Ever Make it Home disc.
The highlights for me were the songs that had an emotional and personal connection to Bowen. "Turn the lights On", "4am", and the title track (which Ashley Monroe sings back-up on the album version) really shone in the acoustic (but still full-band) setting. The songs all lacked the pretense of many alt-country hipster albums as well as avoided all cliche, carbon-copy non-sense that many mainstream records posess. Sadly, Bowen didnt perform the duet track, "Daddy & The Devil", and that is possibly due to his duet partner, the one and only Chris Knight, not being there to join in.
Afterwards, Wade walked around, made sure everyone had a good time and even signed a poster for my brother, who was actaully getting the autograph for his 7yr old son who seems to worship musicians even more than his uncle...
