Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson

Postby Razor X on September 20th, 2008, 9:38 am

I finally got around to giving this one a try and all I can say is, "Wow!" This has really exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't heard it yet. I'm not really familiar with any of Kasey's prior work, but to me she sort of sounds like Deana Carter, with a stronger voice.

This may well be the best album of the year and of her career.

What other albums of hers do you recommend, keeping in mind that I'm looking for something in the same vein as this one?

Fantastic record. It's one of my top 5 of the year for sure. Such a classic sound with a fresh vibrancy. It's beautiful.

I would recommend starting with The Captain and then Wayward Angel, which has a lot more bluegrass on it than people think.

Her first 4 albums progressivley more pop so this is album was a pleasent surprise. The Captain was her best one (prior to Rattlin' Bones), I'd say her worst was Carnival. They're all good but The Captain is her most similar to Rattlin' Bones.

I went and listened to some stuff of hers on YouTube to see how she stacked against Deana Carter

Kasey failed; I don't think she sounded much like Deana... more like Kellie Pickler, but more mellowed out

Her voice wasn't bad, but I prefer Deana Carter's voice <clings to Deana CD>

Oh wow I can't imagine ever seeing something like that on American Idol, too bad too, I guess Dolly last year was decent enough.

Definitely... a great, great album. I'd also recommend quite a bit of Kasey's earlier work... it isn't as strong arrangement-wise, as Rattlin' Bones is just flawless in that respect... but still some nice music.

I'm a big fan of Kasey Chambers. I think Rattlin' Bones is excellent. I bought it when it came out and it's still in rotation on my ipod. I've collected all her albums and a fair number of cd singles, bonus and promotional cds.

I'd reccommend The Captain and Barricades and Brickwalls over Wayward Angel and Carnival, although both of the latter albums have their own charms. Also worth checking are the Dead Ringer Band albums if you can find them. The Dead Ringer Band was the family band consisting of Bill Chambers (father), Dianne Chambers (mother), Kasey Chambers (daughter) and Nash Chambers (son). I quite enjoy Kasey's and The Dead Ringer Band's covers of songs by John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Michelle Shocked, Fred Eaglesmith, Maria McKee, etc.

It may not be your cup of tea but I thoroughly enjoy the self titled album Kasey Chambers, Poppa Bill and The Little Hillbillies. It was promoted as a children's album but is something the big kids can enjoy too...well I like it :)
