One of my favorite songs on the second Texas Troubadours album, "Country Dance Time" ('65) is "The Honky Tonks And You," sung by Cal Smith. I don't know the deep catalog history of Tubb's music, but did he ever record that song himself? It sure has that Ernest Tubb feel, more so than any of the cuts on those Troubadours albums.

Today I'm featuring "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking" on my blog, 3 Chords a Day. The good folks at The 9513 have made it one of their links, for which I'm grateful.

Good article...Nice to hear "Drinking Champagne" on the stream. Some may not remember George Strait's cover of that classic over a decade ago...

ET had a voice as instantly recognizable as that of Johnny Cash and was a gigantic star in his time, to a degree that neither Jack Greene nor Cal Smith ever reached. Most of Tubb's biggest hits occurred during the 1940s and early 1950s.

Greene and Smith really didn't serve as background singers on Tubb's records. They were there as musicians and received featured slots on his live shows (and TV show) and on Texas Troubadour albums

Always think Cal has been underrated, perhaps like his (sorta) namesake Carl Smith. Love Cal's 'Lord Knows I'm Drinking', an absolute cracker of a song, a real 'Harper Valley PTA'-esque sass-back song. Texas Troubadours of the 60s really were one of the best groups ever assembled...Strange that whilst Tubb is not considered one of the great singers in terms of vocal ability, he had Smith and Greene to back him up!
Thanks for the article,
