Football Game Rumor Causes Minor Frenzy Over Death of Dolly Parton
- Despite rumors to the contrary, Dolly Parton has not died.
- Ross Bonander relays fives things you didn’t know about Johnny Cash in an article on AskMen.com, for instance, Cash’s recordings at Folsom Prison contain two songs that he had never performed live before, and only learned the night before: the Shel Silverstein penned “A Boy Named Sue,” and “Greystone Chapel,” a tune written by Folsom inmate Glen Sherley. (via ggcolumn)
- George Jones credits much of his success to Billy Sherrill, the man who produced his signature hit “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and changed the country music landscape through the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.
His sophisticated musical arrangements ushered in the “Countrypolitan” era, in which violins and violas softened hard country voices just enough to appeal to city listeners. As a Billboard magazine advertisement once noted, by the 1970s four of the biggest words in the recording industry were, “Produced by Billy Sherrill.”
- Taylor Swift unveiled the cover for her new album, Fearless, due out on Nov. 11 with three price tiers ranging from $13.88 to $75.
- Before the age of 22, Lucky Tubb (MySpace) had spent five years in Texas prisons for possession of 52 pounds of marijuana and parole violations. Upon his release he headed to Austin where he dug into the music scene and with the help of Guy Forsyth and Wayne Hancock, he developed his sound, basing it on that of his late great-uncle, Ernest Tubb. Now 36, he considers his sophomore album, Damn the Luck, to be his band’s clearest declaration of independence yet.
- One of our readers, Sam G., started up an unofficial The 9513 group on Last.fm to create a chart of what songs our readers are listening to. If you’ve got an account, I encourage you to join.
- Chris Neal on Reckless Kelly’s Bulletproof: “Topical firebombs like ‘American Blood’ and ‘God Forsaken Town’ sit uneasily among a suite of tunes mostly about good old-fashioned romantic love and loss–but if you can stand the whiplash, Bulletproof is a ride worth taking.”
- Bruce Robison talks about songwriting and his new album with KUT’s David Brown. He feels roots music in a digital age needs to be rootsier, it’s getting too slick and says his new album, New World, is about getting back to the old time Austin vibe.
- In a Q&A with The Santa Barbara Independent Patty Griffin lauds George Strait:
I have developed a huge fascination with George Strait because I noticed that every time I hear him sing I would feel [like] it’s all going to be okay. There’s something about his voice that takes you straight out of panic and puts you in a place where everything’s going to be all right. And that’s a very powerful thing to have in a voice.
- Darrell Scott describes his recently released Modern Hymns album as his own little journey toward artistry.

If Dolly had actually died, I’d probably feel as if my grandma died. Shame on those who started that nasty rumor.

Do you think Taylor Swift realizes that the 80’s have been done before?
August 25, 2008 at 11:46 am Permalink
I’m trying to wrap my head around spending $75 for a Taylor Swift CD. Today’s 13 year olds must have a lot more spending money and a lot less common sense than I did at that age.

$75?? What’s it made out of, gold? I really don’t remember being that weird when I was a teenager…
August 25, 2008 at 11:52 am Permalink
To the Sams,
NEVER underestimate the power that Tweens and Teens have on what their parents will buy. Those 10,000 special packages WILL sell out.

it could be lack of their parents’ common sense, as they are generally the ones shelling out the $$ that 13 yr olds are spending.

Exactly Paula,
The parents of the Swift Army Tweens and Teens will do anything to please these children. That’s why Disney Channel is so incredibly popular/a star ‘maker.’
People aren’t going to Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers shows because they’re ‘good’ are they?

I refuse to be baited into a Miley / Hannah discussion.

Wasn’t trying to ‘bait’ ya ;) I was just sayin…’

I didn’t think 13-year-olds even bought CDs these days. Don’t they download most of their music?
In fact, it would be interesting to know if Taylor has a higher percentage of digital sales compared to most other country artists.

@ Matt — I know you weren’t baiting — but it’s just so easy for me to get started on my rampage about the parents that cater to the whole Miley / Hannah phenomenon.

a taylor-made cd plus bling-bling. sounds like a gigundo steal at $ 75.00
August 25, 2008 at 3:07 pm Permalink
I almost had a stroke when I read about the Dolly rumour. It will be a really sad day when she is really gone.
August 25, 2008 at 3:16 pm Permalink
Dang, I’ve been forgetting to work “gigundo” into my conversations.

Razor,
Taylor does rank as the #1 ‘digital’ Country artist to date. But that doesn’t mean she’s sold ‘albums’ in the sense that we remember: She’s sold 164,776 of her 3 million or so albums digitally. She did sell 146,264 of the single “Change” (#3 overall last week) and 479,000 copies of “Should’ve Said No” over all. Sugarland has sold 450,000 copies of “All I Want To Do” FYI.
August 25, 2008 at 3:56 pm Permalink
Most of the 13 year olds I know only download their music, and most of it illegal.

Dolly Parton has chosen to debut here new “9 to 5″ musical stage production here in Los Angeles although I really don’t know why. Dolly has recorded special promo radio ads where she’s singing the song “9 to 5″ with the lyrics altered to be the pitch for the stage show. The singing advertisement is airing on a variety of station formats from talk radio to rock oldies.
I think the tweens and teens driving the sales of Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus CDs find it easier to beg money off their parents than do the online payment thing for downloads. If they are shopping with Mom at stores that sell music, they know incessant whining/begging can be quite effective….
Off Topic: I got to meet Hollerin’ Ben Cisneros in person yesterday at the 1100 Springs concert at Safari Sams venue in Hollywood. Even though the concert was free there were only about 15 people in the audience, but the guys in 1100 Springs enjoy what they do so much they didn’t seem to mind! Jeff, the club DJ who books the bands for the Sunday afternoon “Americana Brunches”, requested the great Johnny Cash sound alike song “10 to Life”. Vocalist Matt Hillyer said they don’t perform it live very often because it has too many words, which is a shame if true (although I think he was just jesting?). 1100 Springs puts on a great live show and I highly recommend that anyone who gets a chance to see them live should do it!

Well, I will say that the Taylor CD pic is memorable. And that’s probably what her team was going for. But memorable doesn’t make it good!

A quick “Rick’s Random Tidbits”!:
The celebrity competitors on the upcoming “Dancing with the Stars” season have been announced and the only two male participants are Lance Bass and 18 year old Cody Linley (from Hannah Montana). So the real question is which lucky guy will get Julianne Hough as his dancing partner? By dancing with Cody Miss Julianne will score a direct hit with the Hannah Montana core audience and may watch her album sales skyrocket to Taylor Swift like levels! (Well maybe anyway…) On the other hand Julianne’s current pretty boy-toy Chuck Wicks would much rather see Julianne paired with Lance Bass, who’s dancing skills reportedly improved dramatically after he came out of the closet….(lol)

Paula, come on over and join me in posting at Roughstock so Matt B. isn’t quite so lonely! Its a place you can publicly state you don’t care for Miranda Lambert’s major label albums and not get picked on for having good taste in music! (lol)
As the Langolier of The 9513 that finishes threads off, I just want to post one more interesting article from AllAboutCountry:
” WBR Nashville VP/A&R Tracy Gershon Leaves The Label – Former Nashville Star Host/Judge Has Landed Some Of Music’s Greatest Acts:
Warner Bros Nashville VP/A&R Tracy Gershon has left the building. She is well-known to have two of the best “ears” on Music Row, which she shared with us as one of the judges on a previous season’s Nashville Star on the USA Network.
Tracy Gershon began her career in the music industry by booking concerts for the University of California Santa Barbara. After graduation, she went to work for Avalon Attractions as a concert promoter, and in 1982, went to work for Backstreet/MCA Records as Senior Director of Creative Services.
Her passion for country music led her to start her own management company, representing Warner/Reprise Artist Rosie Flores and Curb Artist Jann Browne. While maintaining her management company, she was also hired as a song-plugger by EMI Music and then re-located to Nashville, where she was made Director of Creative Services for EMI Nashville.
Tracy Gershon has signed some of Music’s most prolific acts, including The Mavericks, Joe Ely, Carlene Carter, James House and Miranda Lambert.
She currently sits on the Board of Directors of Leadership Music, NARAS, and The Actors Bridge Theater Group.”
WOW, she started off as a manager for Jann Browne while still based here in Los Angeles. I think I may be in love! (lol)
August 26, 2008 at 9:25 am Permalink
My guess is that Tracy Gershon got tired of working with Scott Hendricks. When that label loses Cris Lacy they’ll be in some serious trouble.
