Zac Brown Band

For our first giveaway of the new year, we’re offering you a chance to score a one-of-a-kind piece of country music memorabilia.

Hailing from Atlanta, Zac Brown Band burst onto the scene with their 2008 smash “Chicken Fried” and their debut national album The Foundation. The band’s introduction to the country music world is a high-powered 11-song collection that landed on two of The 9513’s end-of-year “staff picks” lists:

“Zac Brown Band’s major label debut showcases a surprisingly honest and direct songwriting voice…[A]n album that is full of soul, and one that digs deep into love and loss, at times revealing characters who are in a state of reverie while at others those who are mired in heartwrenching despair. The Foundation is one of the year’s most unexpectedly satisfying debuts.” — Jim Malec

“Zac Brown Band joins Ashton Shepherd, Jamey Johnson and even Joey + Rory as examples of how the mainstream can still be unique, credible and authentic.” — Kelly Dearmore

Today we’re giving you a chance to win a copy of The Foundation, as well as a hand-written lyric sheet from the band–something that can’t be bought and can rarely be won.

Well, since my alarm clock is my ipod, I guess music gets me up in the morning! It’s such a major part of my life, I really don’t think I could live without music.

You know that we weren’t being specific/literal, right? Maybe I should phrase it this way–what makes your day worth getting up for?

  7. Paula_W
    February 4, 2009 at 2:12 pm Permalink

@ CMW – LOL, me too! Only mine gets me up BEFORE it’s time to get up most days and then I go back and snooze for another hour or so.

I think I have to copy Chris D’s answer (sorry Chris) but I’ll add to it by saying that I have set a song of my favorite singer/songwriter as my wake up tone, so it’s not just the music, it’s his voice that wakes me up every morning and puts a smile on my sometimes otherwise “I dont want to get up” face.

  8. Paula_W
    February 4, 2009 at 2:20 pm Permalink

@ Jim – I think it’s still the same basic answer for me. Music. Not just for the music itself, but more specifically for the people that it has brought into my life; especially over the past six years or so. It’s those friends and that common bond that we have that makes life fun. I continue to meet new people based on that common factor, and my dearest friendships, though they may not be my longest friendships, are founded on a shared love of music, musicians, writers, artists – the whole ball of wax.

  9. Rainbow
    February 4, 2009 at 2:25 pm Permalink

My answer is still essentially the same. I love the feeling of waking up, no matter how tired I might be. Taking a small walk early in the morning, smelling the flowers and breathing the fresh air just makes me appreciate life. Just the feeling of the early morning makes me want to get up.

“It” is usually my roommate singing in the shower. “It” is then my looking at the alarm and hating the guy because I could have slept for another 20 minutes. On the weekends, “It” is usually my cell phone ringing due to my friends who are morning people calling to ask if I want to hang out.

    I’m not a morning person.

As for what makes my day worth getting up for, “it” is my friends (even when their singing wakes me up) and family, as well as my job (which is as much my friends as anything else).

“It” is my dog who is rather insistent about getting her trip out to the yard each morning, followed by her breakfast after which she heads back to MY bed for a nap while I’m showering and getting dressed to go to work.

What gets me up in the morning is the mountain of student debt that I accumulated of the last decade and the job I have to work to pay it down. Getting there a little early to read the 9513 and see if Brody has quoted some Guy Clark song that I haven’t heard does help though.

@Mike K – The pressure is on now. There’s only so many Guy Clark songs to quote, but here’s a killer lyric from the first song he ever wrote:

    Here’s a book of poems I got
From a girl I used to know
I guess I read it front to back
    Fifty times or so
It’s all about the good life
And stayin’ at ease with the world
It’s funny how I love that book
And I never loved that girl

Clark never recorded it, but you can find it on Lyle Lovett’s cover album Step Inside This House. (Or check it out on Last.fm)

The Veterans are ‘IT’ for me. I work for the Oklahoma Dept of Veterans Affairs. I work with disabled veterans. And at 23 I can honestly say that I am in love with them. I drive 80 miles everyday for work. I love the guys, their stories, and how old school they are. Every single day I get to hear their amazing stories from WW2, Vietnam and Korea. I wouldn’t change my job for anything in the world. I get reminded everyday that I can get up and feel safe because all these guys were there to protect me!!

Pretty much the only reason I get out of bed in the morning is the eternal hope that one day, I’ll be able to spend my life with that someone special I’ve been waiting for for 22 years. As hopeless as it seems at times, I hold on. As dawn breaks and I clear my eyes, stretch, and set my feet on the cold hardwood floors, I think… one more day, one more chance that maybe I’ll see his face for the first time and maybe he’ll make me smile and maybe, just maybe, we’ll be happy. Hope, that’s what gets me out of bed.

What is “IT” that gets me up in the morning?
My “girls”. Some of my friends have sons and love to talk about what “manly” things they do with them. But I would not trade the feeling of a little girl reaching up when you walk in from a hard day of work and begging you to play “dogs” or “cooking”. Maybe not the most manly things in the world, but to me I would not trade that “it” factor of my daughters for the world and all the sons in it.

As a person who is struggling to keep my head above water in terms of student-to-real world transitioning (thanks to the economy meltdown), I’d say what keeps me up and running is the fact that my fiancee is supporting both of us since she has a stable job (special education) where even the government can’t discipline or ignore. I, too, have a certification in special education, but am just twiddling my thumbs and waiting on the extensive, loooong process of approval and certification/fingerprint cards. I thank her for her patience and endurance, even though, I do get some monthly security benefits, but hardly anything that will pass on in the long run.
Me thinks I’m starting up a country song out of this paragraphical soliloquy and the next few year’s single will contain depression-ish song based on Bush’s undoing and (hopefully) Obama’s outgoing performance. Enuff said.

It puts a smile on my face and gets me moving ~ into the hot shower, over to the coffee machine, humming on my drive to work. I’m a single Mom and there just never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done…work, kid, dog, house, the 3-Day training, friends…it really helps to find something that lifts your spirits and puts a smile on your face…and country music is doing that for me lately!

Well what usually gets me up in the mornings is my alarm clock. It takes alot to get me motivated in the mornings lol. I’m still not fully awake until I get in my car to go to work, Turn on my CD player (which has had the Foundation in it since it’s release) listen to “Toes” and drink a mountain dew. I follow that by turning on my local country radio station to see if there’s anything new with the band, and listen to “Chicken Fried” because they play it about the same time every morning. So…I guess you could actually say that I “WAKE UP” to the band Every day! What a good way to start the day!

I am most certainly not a morning person, but I have the most incredible and fun 4-year-old son who loves mornings, and days, and nights. He simply loves life! That is what I live for-that smile on his face as he crawls into my bed to snuggle in the morning before school, that laugh that makes anyone around him laugh, the touch of his sweet hand as we walk across the street, the millions of questions that spill out of his curious mind each and every day, that willingness to love and befriend anyone no matter their shape or size or the color of their skin, and even that little mischevious side of him that keeps me on my toes. I have been incredibly blessed with a super cool, amazingly smart, and wonderfully fun child and, even though I am still not a morning person, I don’t want to miss a single moment of his life! I live to know his heart, and he in turn brings out the kid in me and the person I want to be. I don’t know what I may have done in my life to make me deserve such a special gift, but I thank God for giving me the greatest reason in the world to get up each morning and live my life. My son is my hero and he doesn’t even have a clue.

My husband and I don’t need to wake up with an alarm clock, I guess we wake up with our biological time clock.. Usually my husband will bring me a cup of coffee, ( I have a wonderful husband) it makes a difference in how you start your mornings because a lot of times it will set the mood for the day, then we proceed to get our precious baby girl up to get her ready for pre-school, after that my husband leaves for work and I take Keaton to school then proceed to go to my job at a pediatric dental office. You really have to have a special heart to work with kids, we work with kids who have autism and have special needs. So my point is if you don’t start the morning off right then your whole day could be affected and in my line of work you need to be in a good mood most of the time,

The best part of waking up in the morning for me is to be with my two year old daughter. I get so excited to see what new things she might do. She always has a smile on her face. I look forward to taking her to the park. It gives me great pleasure to see her having so much fun. If I am in a bad mood for some reason and she comes into the room she will have a big smile on her face it will instanly get rid of the bad mood. when it is nap time she will get up on my lap when i am sitting in my chair and fall asleep. when it is time to eat she will let me know and while eating she will make a big mess, and it is always fun to make a game out of cleaning her up. she is the reason i am so excited to wake up every morning. to me there would be nothing to replace this.

My beautiful first born (3 1/2 years old) is what gets me out of bed these days … she comes into our bedroom when she wakes up in the morning. She snuggles for a few minutes and then usually asks me to make her something to eat.

I do have dreams about sleeping in (8:00AM would be nice), but she is so sweet that I am glad to get up and make her breakfast (most days). We had twins 5 months ago, and amazingly enough they are still asleep when their sister wakes up. But even when they wake up in the middle of the night, which they do often, I get over my initial annoyance very quickly. Their beautiful little faces make everything in the world right.

So – “it” is my beautiful children. They fill my heart daily – or as we like to say in my house, “they fill my bucket”. It is always full!!

What gets me up in the morning? Knowing I get to watch my teenagers trudge to the bus stop in frigid weather, and the wife and I get a few minutes alone to preview what life will be like when my birdies finally leave the nest in a few years.

The ‘it’ for me is my family! Waking up hearing my baby boy jabbering in his crib, hearing him mumble Momma, hearing my daughter come downstairs and say good morning. And waking up with my husband next to me, knowing that together we can get through anything.
And of course, we all love great music!

What gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing that I’ve been blessed with another day with my children and husband. I know that no matter what the day brings, the love that we have as a family is what life is all about, the kisses, the singing, the laughter, the tears. Wouldn’t change a thing!!!

I use the sweet sounds of life in my very busy house to wake me every morning. I have the most amazing family that supports me and all my decisions. I have the most amazing partner. We support each other 100%. The thought of her being in my life wakes me up every morning, with the thought of seeing her. I just recently got turned on to the Zac Brown band, and smile everytime Chicken Fried comes on. This songs holds so true to the south and has created memories for me.

What gets me up in the morning is the first brave bird who sings his song as spring approaches; I feel his longing for warm weather, beautiful sunny days, and the time when I can prop up by the lake with my ass in a lawn chair, toes in the clay, not a worry in the world a PBR on the way.

It’s my wife, my son and my God. Every day I get up to 2 smiling faces that love me. That makes all the hard work in the day to come worth it. I work 2 jobs and the way I see it it’s one job for each of them so my wife can raise our baby. I also ask God every day to let me be a light for him and if He will let me be some one’s ordinary angel. That’s what it is that keeps me going.

I would have to say that thing that gets me up in the morning is the strength I get from being a single mother. It’s not easy having another human being depend on you for everything. Its a heavy weight but one that I chose freely. The love I have for my son and the desire to give him a better life than I had or could even imagine having is what gets me up in the morning. :)

Every morning I wake up to Zac Brown Band’s Chicken Fried song going off as my alarm. Then as I continue to get out of bed and ready for the day I listen to The Foundation cd. The music is so amazing and helps me start my morning off right. Not only does the music itself get me through the day but the content of the music. All the songs remind me of home. Even though I have wonderful friends here at college, there is nothing better than being reminded of home. Remembering each and every single day that at home I have friends and family who love me and will always be there for me. The fact of knowing that I can always count on the southern comfort that home brings to me is what gets me up in the morning and gets me through til the night.

When my mic is turned on, whether for a friend who needs an ear, a social injustice that could use a little straightening out or Judgment Day, I pray that I’ve bathed in the waters of experience and soaked up enough of “its” knowledge to be able to help by being heard.

The “It” that gets me up every morning is knowing that as tired as I maybe, and as long as my weeks are between engineering school and a full time job, that one day it will pay off. One day it wont be pay check to pay check and the struggles of my familys blue collar life will in this generation be rewarded. To know that when I have kids I wont have to struggle like my mother did. Thats all I need to get up and do it all over again!

My radio alarm clock goes off, and the morning DJ has the most annoying voice. I alway push the snooze button, and then the Jack Russell jumps on the bed and gets in my face. “time to potty”! Let the dog out, go potty my self, put my sweats on and get kids out of bed. Of couse the dog is back in helping get everyone out of bed.
I feel so blessed to be able to wake up every day.

I’m a nanny for two great kids, when my alarm goes off I know in about 30 mins I will be watching them. I am so blessed to have these kids in my life for the fact that I cant have any of my own.

Well technically my cat wakes me up…he licks my face. But what makes me more willing to get up is the fact that I have friends to see, animals to take care of, and beautiful sites to see.

Normally it is my radio set to maximum volume. If it wasn’t turned up, I’d just lay there in my sleep and listen.

What gets me up in the morning is knowing I have to go out and make some more money just to get by in this world and what keeps me going are the things that make me forget about the reason I have to get up every morning.

What is “it” that wakes me up every morning? Well, besides my three alarms, no joke 3!, I’d say my friends, family and my one of a kind Pup, Orion, who’s half Dingo and half German Shepherd. Keeping in touch with the one’s I love is truly a blessing. Thanks for the great music! Keep it coming! I was at the Snoqualmie Casino, outside Seattle, WA for ZBB’s FREE show a week ago and it was AMAZING!!
