Esquire Names Miranda Lambert ‘Terrifying Woman of The Year’
- Esquire magazine dubbed Miranda Lambert “Terrifying Woman of the Year” in its annual Esky Music Awards. Does that say more about Miranda Lambert or the readers of Esquire?
- Ashley Monroe is among the six finalists for A Prairie Home Companion talent contest. The contest will air at 5pm this Saturday and you’ll be able to vote for your favorite performer online from around 6pm to 6:30pm. Visit the website to find out what stations the show airs on. - On March 25 a compilation of country songs, Country Clover, will be released to help raise awareness of 4-H, America’s largest youth development organization. The CD will be available through local 4-H chapters, Amazon, and www.4-hmall.com.
- Jim Caligiuri of The Austin Chronicle isn’t feeling Hayes Carll’s new album, Trouble In My Mind.
There are bits of Todd Snider’s folk and Steve Earle’s energetic country twang in Carll’s musical vision, but he never distances himself enough from either to sound fresh, no matter how many semiwitty turns of phrase he generates.
- Washington D.C., Austin and Nashville are the only remaining dates for national auditions of Nashville Star.
- Episode #13 of the It Burns When I Pee podcast is available for your listening enjoyment. The episode, titled “Titties and Country Music,” features an interview with Doyle Mayfield from The Doyle and Debbie Show.
- Craig Shelburne says the very first band he saw this year at SXSW knocked him out (not literally…I hope). Fronted by twin brothers, the Barker Band is reminiscent of early Old Crow Medicine Show with energy to match the Avett Brothers.
- David Cantwell’s thoughts on No Depression:
Now, “barring the intercession of unknown angels” (to quote the latest issue), and excepting whatever limited version of the magazine may or may not continue online, No Depression will head only in the direction of the sunset. Like a really great country weeper or soul lament, it breaks my heart.
- ND isn’t the only magazine forced into an early retirement, Bluegrass Now announced it will fold after it’s April issue, electing to take the online route where their subscriber numbers already match the number of print subscribers. The magazine began publication in 1990 and is one of the leading bluegrass magazines.
- For the past 10 years Jason Blume has been teaching a free songwriting class once a month at BMI. Songwriters just have to show the day of class to register, although it generally fills up pretty quickly.
- When Michael Buble stopped by Nashville a couple of days ago, he invited Blake Shelton on stage from an impromptu rendition of “Home.” Check out the video.

Forgotten Artists: Goldie Hill Had Carl Smith and Goldie Hill been born 30 or 40 years later, they might have been like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw–the dominant married couple in country music.
Forgotten Artist: Wynn Stewart Both Buck Owens and Merle Haggard have cited Wynn Stewart as a major influence on their careers, yet somehow, he was never able to translate his enormous talent into extended and consistent success for himself.
Miranda Lambert - “More Like Her” This kind of material, as opposed to her tough-chick-done-wrong romps like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Gunpowder and Lead,” is where her real promise lies
Joey Rory - “Cheater, Cheater” It’s actually downright frivolous, but that just makes it all the more fun. And really, are you allowed to say “ho” on country radio?
Josh Gracin - “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” Despite initial marketing that touted the album as deep and personal, “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” is anything but deep or personal.
Josh Turner - "Everything Is Fine" Turner is the rare example of an artist who records material that’s both quality and trademark.
Darryl Worley - "Tequila On Ice" A groovy mid-tempo that sways, a refreshing reprieve from the exhausting pace of a format that clamors for loud music and swelling choruses.
Blake Shelton - "She Wouldn't Be Gone" It’s all about nailing the melody rather than providing a legitimate interpretation that accentuates the lyrical content, although Shelton does do a pretty good job of injecting what limited emotion he can.
Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
In Memory of Don Helms (1927 - 2008) Helms dated back to a time when an excellent four or five piece band and a good singer were all that were needed to make great country music. No drums, no light shows, no production tricks in the recording studio–just good music.

RE: Esquire magazine and Miranda Lambert.
I think it says that between Lambert and Underwood, Lambert appears more likely to kick your ass if you cheat.

You do a couple of songs about killing dudes, and suddenly you’re “terrifying.”

I’m sorry, but if your dating Miranda Lambert, you really have no excuse to cheat ;)

Brody, Thank you so much for making Ashley Monroe’s announcement about the competition on Prairie Home Companion part of this news summary post so that the majority of The 9513’s readers will see it and hopefully participate. I’m not registered on MySpace so I don’t know if new concert listings automatically get sent out to all her “Friends” like new blog entries do? Ashley should have posted a new blog mentioning her PCH appearance and upcoming Nashville club show date as well just to be doubly sure.
PS - In spite of Esquire’s choice I’d have to pick Hillary Clinton as “Most Terrifying Woman Of the Year” in music or any other area for that matter. (Normally I’d avoid politics, but this is a pretty slow news day so this should liven things up….)

I didn’t see the announcement here but I stumbled on to Prarie Home Companion this afternoon while working on some writing. Ashley Monroe is by far the most polished performer in the competition and she has a dynamite voice. She might be “a bit too country” for the regular Prarie listeners, so I’m voting 10 times minumum and I hope those reading do the same.
I came here to post this because I wouldn’t have known Ashley at all without the 9513. I heard her introduced, thought it rang a bell, then came looking. You guys are on top of things, so I can spend last week on the beaches of Baja Mexico. Thanks.
