Emerson Drive – “Belongs To You”

Jim Malec | November 3rd, 2008 Email Share

Emerson Drive

Songwriters: Dave Berg, Rivers Rutherford & Tom Shapiro.

Emerson Drive’s lead singer Brad Mates already possesses one of country music’s most indistinct voices, so coupling that voice with a song as absolutely rudimentary as “Belongs To You” probably wasn’t the smartest idea in the world. And if there’s one thing we can reaffirm from this song, it’s that adding zero to anything leaves you with, well, whatever you started with.

Mates is not a poor singer. To the contrary, he’s a fine and immensely talented singer, perhaps on a short list of the best in the format, from a technical standpoint. The problem is that there’s nothing about his voice which stands out–it has no specific characteristics that define and make it identifiable.

So pairing it with equally bland material predictably results in something that is boring and entirely inconsequential.

That’s the case with “Belongs To You,” a song as well-constructed as could be expected (considering that it is made up almost entirely of clichés), but which nonetheless feels like an exercise in mediocrity–a fact audible in Mates’ delivery, in which he sounds as uninterested in the song as I am.

It’s an uncomfortable and uncommitted performance, somewhat like listening to a good demo singer being forced to sing a bad song; no matter how good a job he or she does, there’s only so far the song can be elevated, and knowing that can create a detachment that often leads to a sufficient but underwhelming vocal outcome.

It isn’t coincidental that each of Emerson Drive’s three hits have been great songs, in one sense or another: “I Should Be Sleeping” was a quirky up-tempo that nodded at Rascal Flatt’s “Prayin’ For Daylight,” while “Fall Into Me” was powerful and allowed Mates to showcase some of his vocal chops. And then there was “Moments,” a fundamentally fantastic song which could only have been a hit in the hands of someone capable of effectively singing its unique and somewhat straining melody.

But can any outside of the band’s fan club point to anything else the group has released? They’ve been around for almost eight years, now, you know. They’ve released 15 singles. So why do they still feel like an unknown entity?

Emerson Drive is an act that will ultimately be defined not by its talent but by its catalog. Fair or not, the band’s success will remain directly tied to its ability to identify and secure not good but outstanding material. And they just haven’t consistently done that yet.

“Belongs To You” is a step in the wrong direction.

Haven’t heard much from these guys in awhile. “Moments” was great, but it seemed pretty sleazy when they used Johnny Reid’s “You Still Own Me” as the subsequent single for US radio, but chose “Everyday Woman” as their Canadian single at the same time so it wouldn’t look like they were just re-using someone else’s song in their own country.

I have a feeling that was Midas’ choice, not the band’s. I have no way to prove my gut feeling, however.

Ok i am listening to this song now and i am having a hard time getting through, but i will listen to the whole song, i am not impressed at all, he sounds like he is struggling to keep his voice from taking off and doing what it knows it can do, to much power in him to go sooooooooooooooooo slow

While I liked this song a little more than you did, Jim, I still agree with the basic premise that it’s a filled with ‘been there, done that’ lyrics. That being said, I fully expect this to be a hugely successful single for the band.

Thanks Matt. I dont know why I didnt think of that. I tried cmt.com.

I like the song. Not my all-time favorite, but overall I liked it pretty well. It wasnt a stand-out, but I didnt have any trouble listening to it all the way through – twice.

I’ve started trying NOT to be so analytical (and critical) when listening to music. I’d gotten to the point where I couldnt enjoy ANY song because I was too busy picking it apart.

I will say, knowing that Rivers cowrote it, I just let myself hear him singing the second time through and I liked it better that way. :-)

I think the song is fine, and Emerson Drive pulls it off pretty well, but I think it could use a little more emotion in the execution.

The guy with the cowboy hat (plays the fiddle I think) looks a little out of place in that photo. the rest of them look like rejects from “The Apprentice”!

Immaturity aside, “Countrified Soul” was a catchy tune, despite it’s pump-it-up Rascal flatts style.

Well I am going to leave a positive comment-I love this song and have heard both the acoustic and radio version and both are great. Brad puts alot of emotion into this song and he is a great singer. And FYI-David (the one in the cowboy hat) looks just fine in the picture and so do the rest of them.

Brad Mates sings this song like no one else. It is sad that some people think that anyone can sing a song. If I remember right, the song Moments, no one would touch it because it deals with suicide. Emerson Drive took the song, recorded it and made it a number one song. With reviews written by people like you, who needs enemies. It is almost like a personal attack on the Band and in general Brad Mates. OH, and the picture rocks, they don’t look like apprentice cast-offs.

Am I the only person who thinks ‘Moments’ is godawful? The first time I heard it I thought it was a parody of overwrought pop-country power ballads.

I hope you are the only one who thinks “Moments” is “godawful”. First of all, I know everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I hope you made that statement from a strictly musical standpoint and not the lyrics/message. How could a story about someone (and you never know, this could be based on a true event) positively influencing another’s life–encouraging that person to hang on to his life–be “godawful”? That song sends a powerful message which many people need to hear. I believe the world would be a much better place if more people were attuned to the needs of those around them and not so self-absorbed.

As far as “Belongs To You” is concerned, I agree that it is full of cliches, but what is wrong with that? I would like you to name one song that doesn’t have some form of cliche in it. From a technical writing standpoint, cliches aren’t good, but songs are not technical pieces of writing, they are poetry. “Belongs To You” has enormous potential to do well and I wouldn’t mind seeing someone else on the top of the charts instead of the same people over and over. Also take into consideration that these guys have had to change record labels twice in the short eight years they’ve been around. It’s hard to have a bunch of hits when you are being bounced around. The fact that record labels keep picking them up shows the amazing potential they have. Whoever wrote this review, have you ever been to an Emerson Drive concert? If not, you don’t know what you’re missing. I, for one, am a BIG sentimental fool when it comes to music and will be requesting this song regularly on the radio. I don’t care how cliche-ridden it is. =) And Brad’s voice is wonderful for this song!

Please excuse Sarah, she is one of the sheeple that the current Nashville music establishment continutes to cater to with their trite, rehashed, and flat-out horrific songs.

Um…don’t excuse me when you don’t know me and have no right to speak for me. If you don’t like what country music is doing, go write and produce songs of your own. Gosh, I just think pessimistic people are so fun to be around! There is something to be said for people who are able to see something positive no matter the situation.

If you know Canadian Country, you know a lot more than 3 Emerson Drive hits. I’m not that big of an Emerson Drive fan, and this song here is just awful.. but they do have a few other good songs that (I assume) never got released in the States. The song “Testify” is a great example of contributions from every band member.. and I’m sure helped everyone win their CCMA nominations for the “all-star band.” On “Testify” they all took turns soloing. Other good Emerson Drive songs include “Waitin’ On Me,” “If You Were My Girl” and “Countrified Soul.”

Emerson Drive is one of the BEST bands out there. Its a shame that there are jealous, ignorant people who can’t realize great talent like these guys. I fell in love w/”Belongs to You” the first time I ever heard it at a concert of theirs. It touches the heart, its a LOVE song, so if you have love in your heart then you would understand this song. Brad & the guys do a fabulous job performing and singing it. I love all their music. Keep up the Great Work Guys.. You still have my support all the way.

I happen to think this song is great. Emerson Drive is an amazing band with TALENT (and you would know that if you ever went to a concert). The first time I ever saw them in concert (and I didn’t even know their music; I was dragged there by some friends)I fell absolutely in love with them… They are amazing performers and keep the crowd on their feet… Brad has an amazing voice and I think he can make any song sound good. I believe this review was a bit harsh. You can’t expect every song released by an artist to be upbeat and happy. For the record they didn’t even write the song and weren’t the only ones to perform this… It was performed first by Jimmy Wayne but Emerson Drive was chosen as the band to release it… Having a friend who is in the music industry I know it’s not easy to please everyone and I’m sorry that you feel this song is horrible but that’s just your OPINION, there are plenty of people out there (ED fans or not) that would totally disagree with the negativity being protrayed here… These guys are finally getting the recognition they deserve and I think you will be seeing more and more of them as the years go by. By the way, I agree with some of the other posts… that pic is great and I happen to think they all look very handsome… as for David, well he wouldn’t be David without that cowboy hat on…

“Moments” was a big hit for them. I always had mixed feelings about the song; because while it is very predictable and formulaic, it is still written so very well and “does its job”. And the performance and recording are also very well done.

So many popular “Country” songs are like that. You can see the theme, lyrics, and even arrangement coming from a MILE away. There are no welcome surprises or departures. But they are trying … SO …. HARD …..

Jennifer, it’s not jealously when it’s just a generally bad song. I’m an Emerson Drive fan, and I can’t stand this song. The fact that Jimmy Wayne was the first to record this song (he of the “So I’m supposed to drop my pants at the airport” fame), and his two most recent singles have been utter rubbish, doesn’t help your cause.

Emerson Drive came to Valparaiso University a couple years ago as part of a concert series, and stole the show. But that doesn’t save a song like this.

WOW!! Didn’t realize there were alot of toned deaf people out here. “Belongs to You” is absolutely GREAT!! I’ve heard it live & online & on radio.. you’d have to have a heart to get the song. Brad’s voice and his emotion in singing the song is wonderful. I support these guys all the way. Their music is fantastic and they are not getting the credit they deserve. If I had someone sing that song to me or dedicate it to me, it would mean so much that they feel that I deserve so much. Listen to the words and listen w/your heart & maybe just maybe you may get a different view on this song in a positive note!!!
