- Miranda Lambert‘s Third Annual “Cause for Paws” benefit will be held May 15 in Tyler, Texas.
- Tour News: Trace Adkins and Toby Keith will hit the road for their American Ride tour on June 19; Miranda Lambert is taking her first official headlining tour, Roadside Bars And Pink Guitars, to the fans on March 18; Carrie Underwood added more dates to her Play On Tour; and Reckless Kelly will join up with Cross Canadian Ragweed in Nashville on March 3 to kick off their Ragged and Reckless tour.
- Dailey & Vincent debuted at the top of the Billboard bluegrass chart for their Cracker-Barrel exclusive album Dailey & Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers.
- Tom T. Hall on writing with his wife Dixie:
Well, we write this way: I’m a fast writer. I write real fast. And she’ll come up with an idea for a song like “Hero in Harlan”, and we’ll sketch it out and get it places where I think it ought to go. But she was a newspaper editor so she’ll take the song and stay up all night and fix it. So I’ll get up and it rhymes and it meters. I have to watch her and make sure it gets to the end though. I accuse her of writing these old bluegrass songs where a lot of people get killed. If I go to bed with a guy walking quietly down a path, when I wake up the next morning, he’ll be hanging in a tree. But we kinda write that way. Of course, we also write some by ourselves.
- Josh Tuner wants people to know it’s not just his voice — he does everything deeply: “[...] I just want people to know that I never compromised. I’ve never been one to compromise in anything I believe in. I feel deeply, I sing deeply, I love deeply and I hurt deeply. Everything I do is deep, and that’s the way I’ve always been.”
- Husband and wife duo Joey+Rory will release their new album, simply titled Album #2, sometime this summer. In the mean time, you can catch them on tour with the Zac Brown Band.
- Billy Joe Shaver on the story behind his song “Live Forever:”
My son Eddy gave me that way back around 1989. Oh God, it’s such a great melody. The melody’s so good that I carried it around for six months before I could figure out what to put with it. I think Eddy gave it to me just to kick my (expletive)!
- My Kind of Country’s Occasional Hope on Walt Wilkins‘ last record, Vigil: “It is a very low key, quiet record, with songs which are beautiful and thoughtful, and the sequencing is perfect. It is a very mature piece of work with an emotional and spiritual honesty which resonates very strongly with me.”
- Music Fog:
- Rhonda Vincent is documenting the recording process for a new album on her website. (via The Bluegrass Blog)

Tom T Hall- “I accuse her of writing these old bluegrass songs where a lot of people get killed. If I go to bed with a guy walking quietly down a path, when I wake up the next morning, he’ll be hanging in a tree.”
That’s VERY funny.

I am really digging the new Court Yard Hounds stuff…

No reason for The9513 to have heard the news, but one of my favorite bluegrass artists, and a friend with whom I was lucky enough to work a number of times passed away on Tuesday – Jim McCall, age 79. Jim was best known as a partner with Earl Taylor, and they recorded several fine albums together in the late 60s and early 70s. You can read my review of one here: http://archives.nodepression.com/1998/08/earl-taylor-jim-mccall-20-bluegrass-favorites-2/ , and you can buy that album in physical or digital form here: http://www.amazon.com/20-Bluegrass-Favorites-Earl-Taylor/dp/B000002NV0 . Another excellent set, 24 Bluegrass Favorites, is available on iTunes. I’m currently working on the production of several compilations of material originally appearing on Cincinnati’s Vetco label, including more excellent music by Jim from the period when he partnered with Vernon McIntyre Jr.; that stuff should be out in a few months. Jim was an exceedingly powerful singer and a fine guitar player, and he’ll be missed.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Jon.

By the way, while it’s not surprising that Court Yard HoundsPR would focus on Martie and Emily, it’s too bad (and a little annoying) that there doesn’t seem to be even a whisper of information about other band members. Are there any?

Pumped about the news regarding EYB! I am a huge fan and am particularly happy to see “Guinevere” finally confirmed as a radio single.
February 11, 2010 at 12:56 pm
Me too, Kelly. I’m relieved that it’s not an instrumental album. While Emily isn’t Natalie, she certainly holds her own as a vocalist. I like the direction they took too.

I thought the vocals on the Court Yard Hounds songs were very weak and overwhelmed by the loud production.

The CYH stuff really underwhelmed me. It’s very in sync with a lot of mainline Americana stuff that’s been coming out; I was hoping for (and, based on the pressers, expecting) something a bit more rootsy.
February 11, 2010 at 2:10 pm
I expected something more rootsy too, but I like the Americana direction, because that’s where my taste has been headed lately anyway. I probably still would have preferred something more like Home though.
February 11, 2010 at 2:37 pm
Perhaps one of the reasons I have enjoyed the CYH as much is that I didnt have any expectations whatsoever, really. I didnt have easily met, low expectations, nor did I hope for a “home-like” experience, either…

bottom line, I am just excited that at least 2 of the 3 talented women in the Dixie Chicks are making music again. No sense in not exercising your god-given gift of music! The songs aren’t what I expected but they aren’t a bad listen either.
February 11, 2010 at 3:08 pm
I prefer they go in the Americana direction then the Taylor Swift direction. I have to admit to being intrigued by this album.
February 11, 2010 at 3:13 pm
Someone want to parse the distinction between “rootsy” and “Americana” for me here?
February 11, 2010 at 3:17 pm
Jon,
I was thinking acoustic-y, I guess.
February 11, 2010 at 3:23 pm
“Acoustic” and “electric” are perfectly fine, clear words ;-).
February 11, 2010 at 6:15 pm
So Emily and Martie are heading in a more Americana direction and Kelly likes it! What a shocking surprise that is! (lol)
Joey + Rory will be on the first segment of the Saturday night Grand Ole Opry and may preview some new material, or better yet a dog song! Well, maybe not…
Wow, that little quote from Josh Turner is really deep! Maybe Josh is confusing thoughtful and cautious for deep? Maybe he was thinking in terms of the Randy Travis song “Deeper Than The Holler”? Hmm…
February 11, 2010 at 8:10 pm
I want to pre-order that Court Yard Hounds album so I can have those 4 songs they are offering. Sounds pretty good for not having Natalie leading it. I anxiously await the return of the true Dixie Chicks, though.
And I’m also looking forward to the new Joey + Rory album, even if their album title choice really sucks.
February 11, 2010 at 11:06 pm
So.. uhh.. this Court Yard Hounds nonsense… its.. uhh… actually pretty good.
February 20, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Hey guys, if you’re into the Dixie Chicks, the Courtyard Hounds album is up for pre-order!!! http://www.sonymusicdigital.com/court-yard-hounds/pages/5451833
