[...] this album is also a vintage Honky Tonk party. One listen to Not That Lucky will have you pouring sawdust on your hardwood floors and clearing the furniture. So call the neighbors and have plenty if PBR on hand because they will want to join the party. After all something this fun needs be shared and enjoyed by all, at least until the Cops arrive.

- In an interview with Country Standard Time, Amanda Shires remembers the first song she ever wrote:
CST: Do you remember sitting down and writing that very first song?
AS: I do. Something about despair is just another stair my heart must dare to bear. (laughs and laughs some more) Isn’t that awful?CST: Come on, you get points for rhyming, right?
AS: No!CST: Maybe you get points taken away….
AS: You do if it’s like 10 sentences in a row. I was in 6th grade, and I think I was trying to be smarter than I was. - Craig Shelburne profiled Dale Ann Bradley, who recently won her third IBMA female vocalist of the year award.
- Farce the Music published two relative size charts, one of which is a special Brooks & Dunn edition.
- Actor and singer Jason Petty, who plays Marty Robbins in a new musical at the Flat Rock Playhouse, shared the story of his brief encounter with Robbins:
The night before Petty’s first musical performance in high school, he was stopped at a traffic signal in Nashville.
“This purple and yellow Corvette pulled up to the light. And it was Marty Robbins,” Petty said. “He had a mustache and big mutton chop (sideburns), which were in style then. He just winked and nodded. And he gave me a thumbs up. That inspired me so much.
“Something spiritual happened that night,” Petty said. “I think about it a lot when I’m on stage. I just wish he could see me now.”
- Alt-512 Music Musings has audio of The Gourds performing a 15-minute jam, which includes “I Can See Clearly Now,” “Up On Cripple Creek,” Psycho Killer,” “Life During Wartime,” and “Gin & Juice,” at Threadgill’s a few nights ago.
- Despite a perceived lack of response to some of his recent releases, Billy Joe Shaver figures he’ll make at least one more album.

- Also, check out Country California for an opportunity to pick up Toby Keith’s latest disc.
- Look out Tyler Dean, you’ve got competition. Broadcast music songwriter Justin Byrd, who attended a casting call for modeling in 2004, performed his own ode to country’s teen princess: “Taylor Swift (You’re the One That I Love)”.

Some readers may like to know that Lucero’s 1372 Overton Park is also out today. And thanks for the link, as always!

Nice Dale Ann profile, but while she’ll continue to spend plenty of time in Nashville, she’s actually moved back to Kentucky. I’d say she’s making her home there, but no one around here seems to know what that word means.

I clicked on the Justin Byrd song, thinking it might be worth a listen. I will never make that mistake again. Now that is some seriously bad vocals.

That might be, but I think you have helped everyone around here understand what “helpless windbag” means…

“Something spiritual happened that night” – You know that sound Snoopy makes in the Christmas Specials or the Magic Pumpkin show when he gets clotheslined or choked by Lucy? I just made that sound… wy does everybody have to try make things sound deep?
“That was cool” or “I was star-struck” would have sufficed. But no, oh no… it was spiritual dude, totally spiritual.

Thanks Trailer. I’d let the Lucero album slip my mind.

Rick’s Random Tidbits: Alison Bonaguro made an interesting observation on a recent CMT blog entry about crowd reaction to Jamey Johnson in a concert she recently attended:
“Those fans were singing along and hootin’ and hollerin’ like Waylon Jennings himself had sauntered onto the stage. It just proves to me that the “country is for soccer moms” image is a little warped. Either soccer moms are dusting off their dad’s old country albums from the ’70s and ’80s and really immersing themselves in that music, or artists like Johnson are expanding the fan base to include music lovers from all demographics.”
WOW! That gal is one clueless soccer mom! Alison, its Top 40 mainstream pop-rock crap country (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, etc.) that’s for soccer moms as opposed to Jamey Johnson who appeals to fans of real country music! Jamey is recapturing the country music fans that soccer mom Top 40 country drove away from radio who are still out there longing for country music with substance. There is bound to be some overlap, but I would wager most soccer moms like “In Color” the best of any Jamey’s songs they’ve heard. Crikey…

Jamey Johnson isn’t mainstream apparently she doesn’t realize that. I just hope he continues to make music that is off center from it.
October 7, 2009 at 2:14 pm Permalink
In what respect is Jamey Johnson not mainstream? Hasn’t he had hits? Hasn’t he won awards? Isn’t he on a major label?
October 7, 2009 at 2:31 pm Permalink
Im gonna go ahead and say it ….I agree with Jon. This guy wrote Honky Tonk Badonkaadonk, is on mainstream radio, CMT darling. That is mainstream.
Which is completely different from good/excellent artist vs. lousy artist, which is where I think people are taking this discussion

Jamey Johnson is very much mainstream – and thats a great thing. He isnt “pop” and he doesnt share the sound of what many people refer to as “contemporary country”, but I see it as a great thing that he can do what he is currently doing and do it inside the slick confines of the mainstream establishment..
October 7, 2009 at 3:48 pm Permalink
Yup, it’s not inherently bad to be mainstream and Johnson is a good example of how mainstream can be done well.
October 7, 2009 at 5:12 pm Permalink
Jamey Johnson sound from “That Lonesome Song” album is not mainstream. In Color the radio version has different production then the record he released. The album he just cut in Nashville with “My Way to You” on it is not his sound. He sold out again. He went back to letting shiny Nashville control him. Jamey Johnson is now corporate, from his “new” sound all the way to his website. It’s a shame…

Wow… that Justin Byrd song was HORRIBLE. I hope he isn’t actually signed. I don’t know who in their right mind would even sign him. That is the worst music I’ve ever heard. I adore Taylor Swift, but if I were Taylor I would be creeped out by that song. He sounds like he is living in a fantasy land.

Will Justin Byrd’s musical genius forever be misunderstood?
