Dolly Parton Reissues Three Albums With Bonus Tracks And Hank Williams Is The Subject Of A Musical
- Dolly Parton is re-releasing three of her albums from the past, only this time she’s including some previously unreleased bonus tracks on the albums. The three albums will be Coat of Many Colors, My Tennessee Mountain Home, and Jolene. Personally, I think it’s a brilliant marketing move. Parton seems to be appearing in the news regularly as of late. Maybe more artists should record tracks when they’re younger and not plan to release them until they get older, kind of like a music time machine. The only risk would be how well the songs age, will they become timeless classics or will they sound so old that people of the current generation can’t relate to them?
- The 25th national final for “the largest country music talent search in existence,” Colgate Country Showdown, is being held at The Ryman tonight. I wonder if any country music superstars will be discovered.
- I don’t know how stuff like this makes it to the news, but apparently a “Yankee” making it to the final seven on Nashville Star is news worthy. I don’t like anything about this excerpt from the Chicago Tribune:
‘I was shocked, actually, because I’m not completely country,’ says Allison, 25. ‘I was kinda shocked that they chose a Yankee.’
On the show’s fifth season — hosted by pop star Jewel — Allison has been cast as the outsider, the sorority girl trying to find her country voice.
Allison’s mom, Donna Slocomb, said it’s just the opposite.
‘I think country is finding people like Meg. Country has gone very mainstream now, there’s a lot of crossover,’ Slocomb says.
First of all, people competing in a country music talent show who don’t even consider themselves country, what’s up with that? Then, what does being a “Yankee” have to do with anything? And thirdly, ahhhhh, even Allison’s mom recognizes the mainstreamness and crossoverity of country music. (By the way, how do you like those two words I just made up? I threw them in there to add to the absurdity of an already absurd article, comment if you’d like a definition.)
- You ever wanted to see a musical on the life of Hank Williams? If you live in or around Lubbock you’re in luck, because one being preformed on February 2nd & 3rd. I think this could actually be one musical I might have enjoyed if I had the opportunity to see it.
“The play itself, it’s an amazing project,” said Maines.
His costume includes Williams’ trademark Stetson hat, which was worn to disguise the fact he was going bald, the musician said.“It’s the most challenging and rewarding project I’ve ever been involved in. It opened my eyes to the impact he (Williams) had on country music,” said Maines.
- I can’t count the number of times I have wished that Wynonna had her own search engine, and now that she does, I don’t even know what to do with it. If you search using her engine you could win concert tickets and merchandise. I guess I can see some incentive for people there, but I’m still not seeing the big picture here.
- The results for the Seventh Annual Country Music Critics’ Poll are up on the web over at Nashville Scene. And what’s even more surprising, I find myself nodding my head in agreement to a lot of the choices they made.

I was at the Ryman tonight and I’ll give y’all the scoop: the winner of the 25th Annual Colgate Country Showdown is Shelby, NC native Megan Peeler.
Megan sang Waylon Jennings’ “The Wurlitzer Prize” and an original song entitled “Damsel in Distres.” While there was a lot of talent on stage, Megan was clearly better than the rest and the judges made the right decision.
The program was taped for a screening on GAC at a later date but I’ll post comments sometime tomorrow for those interested.

Yeah, the whole “Yankee Hoopla” seems much a do about nothing. For one thing, I don’t know anyone from the north that describes them self as a Yankee, minus some baseball fans. I suppose it’s some sort of spin to get the publicity machine rolling. I mean, Shania Twain’s from Canada. The stranger thing is that she’s not into country. (But then again, Jewel, an Alaskan, is the host and her biggest hits are not country.)
