Dolly Parton Hurt By Howard Stern’s Tasteless Manipulation
- Last week Howard Stern manipulated and re-edited sound clips from Dolly Parton quotes “to make it appear the singer was making racist and sexually explicit remarks about Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Carson and others.” Kristin Whittlesey says it wasn’t mildly upsetting either, it was so filthy and nasty that it can’t even be paraphrased. Parton felt “shocked, hurt and humiliated” by the segment. (EXPLICIT: audio is on YouTube)
- Chet Flippo digs the latest two-disc release from The Boxmasters (Billy Bob Thorton’s band), calling it an “enjoyable musical smorgasbord.”
- Bill Friskics-Warren, Chet Flippo and John Gerome have recaps of the farewell ceremony for Eddy Arnold, who would have turned 90 today.
- Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney returned to his hometown of Picher, OK to help American Red Cross with recovery efforts after a deadly tornado ripped apart 114 homes and caused 150 injuries.

- The jeans endorsement deal that Taylor Swift let slip at her “prom” party on Monday was in reference to her partnership with L.e.i. Brand Partners. Swift will be the face of their Back-to-School 2008 advertising campaign called “This is L.e.i. Country.”

- The Hacienda Brothers will release their final album, Arizona Motel, as an unexpected memorial to lead singer and original member Chris Gaffney on June 24.
- Everyone thinks that album art is dying, but Clif Stoltze, principal of Stoltze Design, says “there’s a lot of really great things still being done by the small record labels and designers.” In researching music art for a book he’s putting together, he found that music art isn’t dying, it’s just evolving, and mentions a resurgence in poster art, especially gig posters, as one way designers and musicians are working together to align their artistic visions. Did you get a chance to stroll through Flatstock during SXSW? There’s always an amazing assortment of gig posters on display there. Posters for Wilco and The Decemberists consistently rank among my favorites.

Speaking of Billy Bob Thorton, Billy came on stage last Thursday night at the Safari Sams club in Hollywood and introduced the bizarre rockabilly vampire act Unknown Hinson! If you like bizarre humor songs and blazing guitar solos, then Unknown Hinson is your man! Also, if any of you are fans of the “Squidbillies” cartoon from the adult swim show on Cartoon Network on Sunday nights, Unknown is the voice of papa squid “Early” and is involved in all aspects of that series….
How could Carrie Underwood not make the Maxim list when Taylor and Julianne did? I’m not a fan of Carrie’s singing, but she is a good looking gal by any standards….
The idea of overthrowing that pathetic state of mainstream country these days via Next GAC Star is a hoot. Maaybe Kylie Hrris could host a companion series “The Next Edge of Country GAC Star”….

Lots of stuff to comment on today. The Dolly Parton audio was way beyond tasteless, but I wonder how successful a lawsuit would be.
The Billy Bob Thorton video wasn’t bad.
Based on our outgoing links stats so far, Nashville Scene can expect an influx of traffic.
How did Taylor Swift land so high on that list? She’s not ugly by any means, but one of the 100 hottest? And doesn’t L.e.i. Brand Partners know that Taylor never wears jeans? Seems like an odd partnership to me.

Patrick - I didn’t get a chance, but I did see a few cool posters around town and on the internet during SXSW. Maybe next year, though. The guy who does a lot of those Wilco posters did this Willie one that I thought was pretty cool. I dig this David Serby one a lot, too.

Are you aware that the FCC tried to drive Stern out of business and failed? Dolly is huge, but there is more to the law than a good strong clasp.

I do like Howard from time to time (haven’t listened since moved to satellite radio) and I do get his schtick is to be provocative. However, this just wasn’t funny or even relevant. The audio splicing is really obvious-there is no way anyone could believe these were actual recorded statements. If it was supposed to be shocking, it wasn’t-it sounds just kind of lazy.

Happy Dolly’s suing. Business woman through and through. The audio was poorly edited. Dolly’s a great person and does soooooooooooooo much for charity. Not only a legend among country singers, but she took steps that back when she started weren’t even imaginable for most women to acheieve in country music. All of music owes a lot to Dolly!

Howard Stern’s routine here is pretty un-funny and tasteless, but its so obvious that Dolly never said those things, that I suspect Parton’s potential lawsuit will be on shaky grounds.
The tabloid magazines can print obviously fake stories about celebrities; I suspect Stern will be fine.

As far as the GAC thing goes, I think there’s only one (general) right way to make it in country music and that’s by putting the work in. Chip surely has one thing right though, many of the independent people that complain about the industry would have a good chance at winning this if they wanted to. Especially if they had the support from their friends. My fans on MySpace support me way more than I thought they ever would. When I ask them to check out somebody else’s page, they actually do believe it or not. If everybody teamed up for one artist, that could be some power.
