Despite Being Tackled Off Stage, Drummer Finished Show With Broken Foot
- Jason Boland and the Stragglers were busy playing a normal show in Bossier City this past Saturday when a random stranger from the crowd decided he was ready for football season to start a little early this year. The unidentified man referred to as “Jackass” ran on stage, dove through the drum set and tackled the drummer off the drum riser. And who says honky-tonks are dead? - Ben Werner has a review of the Keith Urban concert mentioned by Hazel Smith in yesterday’s news roundup. Werner says it was a “bustling, highly enjoyable two-hour show” but asked whether Keith Urban is really country anymore.
I’ve never been to a so-called country concert with so few cowboy hats on display — and not a one on stage. Urban and his five-man band dress as if they’re ready to duel with the Goo Goo Dolls, and just as there’s rarely a twang in Urban’s Americanized Aussie accent, so is there nary a country effect on stage, apart from a customized banjo.

His new album, Just Fall To Pieces, comes out July 10th and “gives a nod and a wink to Dwight Yoakam, Joe Ely, Gene Clark, Buck Owens and Charlie Rich.” - Dan MacIntosh posted up his review of Merle Haggard: In Concert 1983 [DVD]. He wrote:
The combination of Haggard’s relatively lackluster performance, along with bonus material that only has slight information about the man and his music, leads you to believe that the makers of this DVD were merely trying to capitalize on this musical legend’s reputation. I’m sure there’s a great Merle Haggard concert DVD out there somewhere, but this release is not it.
Bummer.

- Listen: Homer Joy - “John Law”
According to the website, “John Law” was written about Buck Owens during his younger days as an up and coming country music star and was apparently an inside joke between the two old friends. The song is from Homer Joy’s just released album Someday It’ll Be Country.

It’s kind of pathetic if you think about it, but I do have to admit that if I saw something like that in a movie it’d probably make me chuckle a little.

It’s insane that MCA dropped Bobby Pinson. You hang on to an immense songwriting talent like that with both hands. That guy’s going to generate royalties for years to come, and his stature is going to just go higher and higher.
