Courtyard Houds at SXSW; Kellie Pickler Plans to Shutter Fan Club; Free Thirty Tigers Sampler
- Texas Music Matters posted a recording of Courtyard Hounds performing the song “Then Again” during one of its SXSW gigs.
- Speaking of Courtyard Hounds, Jim Caligiuri caught the sisters’ set at Antone’s during SXSW and concluded, “while the musicianship was superb, the subject matter seemed in dire need of kick that never appeared.”
- Texas Music Matters also posted a three-song set from Colin Gilmore. Good stuff.
- Barry Mazor interviewed Texas fiddle luminary Johnny Gimble for his latest piece in The Wall Street Journal.
For the past decade, however, there have been some physical restraints on Mr. Gimble’s playing. As he explained, “I had a stroke in December of ’99, and it affected my left side—my fingering side. I played a gig with old Floyd Domino on the piano, and he said, ‘Johnny, play “Fiddlin’ Around,” a song of mine that has a difficult fingering. And I had to say, ‘But I can’t reach the S.O.B. now.’ A fiddler in Dallas heard that I’d said that and said, ‘Now you know how the rest of us feel!’”
- Charlie Daniels on Taylor Swift:
“I have great admiration for Taylor Swift. I hold her in very high regard for a number of reasons. First she writes her own stuff, she writes about what she knows.”
- The music from the Charlie Daniels GEICO commericial is available as a free ringtone.
- Music photographer Jim Marshall (that guy who photographed Johnny Cash‘s finger) passed away at the age of 74.
- American Songwriter‘s Michael Kosser on the evolving business of songwriting:
I do believe that, sooner or later, learning to do music business on the Web will be as important as hanging out on Music Square West is today.
- Brooks & Dunn are letting fans vote on a list of six past hits to determine which song will be the duo’s last ACM Awards performance.
- Kellie Pickler announced plans to shut down her fan club and allow everyone to access currently exclusive features.
- Country California Fake News: Jessica Simpson Preps Bluegrass Debut
Although she’s working on her high loathsome tenor, Simpson cautions that fans shouldn’t expect her Rounder debut to be bluegrass in the strictest sense. “We’re not talking Jimmy Monroe and Bill Martin here, but more like the Notorious Steeldusters meets, uh, Jessica Simpson. Sort of a newgrassy type thing, with drum loops over the, uh… banjo is the plucky circle one, right? People will really like it if they give it a chance.”
- Tiger Woods and LeAnn Rimes used to date.
- Can the CD be saved, and more importantly, should it be? Chet Flippo addresses the issue in his latest Nashville Skyline column.
- John Rich loaned his house to Gretchen Wilson last night to celebrate the release of I Got Your Country Right Here on her own label, Redneck Records. More importantly than that though, GAC’s Tom Roland lets us know that Rich has a bar in his elevator.
- What do you think about singers sitting in on songwriting sessions and taking credit with only minimal participation? My Kind of Country wants to know.
-
Music Fog:
- Thirty Tigers partnered with Rhapsody to give away a free 20-song sampler that includes songs from Chuck Mead, Elizabeth Cook, James McMurtry and more.

All these mentions of Charlie Daniels today and no link to his article at The Boot on what he thinks about Odumbo and Obamacare? I’ll rectify this grievous oversight:
Link: http://www.theboot.com/2010/03/25/charlie-daniels-health-care/
I saw Colin Gimlore perform live awhile back and most of his set was boring. He did include a couple of interesting songs, but it was mostly just fluff. Next…
So the real question is what pretty blondes didn’t Tiger Woods date?
The CD should continue on for those who prefer to purchase music that way and for sale as a souvenir at concerts! Well, I would hope it lives on somehow.

Watch our Rick. If this website finds out that Mr. D. is a conservative they may never post anything by him again.
However, I am trying to digest his admiration for not-so-Swift. I am a big fan of his but I am really having to swallow that one. I just may have to spit it out. I am referring to what he says of her talent. I tend, up to this point, to agree his with assertion of her stability but we have all seen that change in others when youth meets stardom.

Even though there’s no chance in hell of it happening, I would love to see “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” win the Brooks & Dunn vote. I don’t know if Kix remembers how to sing, unfortunately.

My God, the comments on that Charlie Daniels link provided by Rick… I couldn’t stop reading them! Frightening.
March 26, 2010 at 2:09 pm
Funny how the popular right-wing idea that artists should “shut up and sing” doesn’t apply to Charlie. As always, it’s “shut up and sing … unless I like what you’re saying.”

Yes, most of Europe consists of dictatorships. Or is this only considered dictatorial in the U.S.?
March 26, 2010 at 4:33 pm
Let’s put it this way: when Castro compliments you on what you’re doing, you’re headed for a dictatorship.
March 26, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Because he’s a dictator himself? Our government supported the Palestinian Hamas government; a group that most of the world consider to be a terrorist group. We are because of this, among other things, well liked by Hamas, and have often received compliments from them. That doesn’t make us terrorists, just like Obama getting a compliment from Castro doesn’t make him a dictator.
March 26, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Who cares what Castro says, USA is still a Democracy and the fear mongering that USA is becoming Socialist is pure crap. Idiots can spew nonsense about a Socialist conspiracy but we still have a Capitalistic system.
March 26, 2010 at 6:16 pm
Warning: That previous post was not by me, the real “Rick”, as his comment about the “USA not becoming socialist” is not only crap but the contrary is rather an indisputable fact at this point under Odumbo and the Demoncraps. How is imposing a Socialist Federal Healthcare System not socialist? Sorry alterna-Rick, but your statement shows you to be politically ignorant. And besides the USA was created a Constitutional Republic not a democracy, and we have (or rather had) a free enterprise economic system as “capitalism” is a term from Marx’s “Das Capital”. If you aren’t already an Obamavoter, you should be…

Opry Alert: Tonight’s Opry will include Dale Ann Bradley, Matt Kennon, Jaime O’Neal, and The Quebe Sisters Band (whom Eddie Stubbs is crazy about!). Saturday night’s Opry will feature Jordyn Shelhart, Dale Ann Bradley, John Anderson, and informed patriot Charlie Daniels! Listen online at WSM!

when there are good reviews about the courtyard hounds you never post it but when its a so so review you cant wait to put it on your site,
you f***ing wankers!
March 26, 2010 at 8:26 pm
Hey Northy, I love that story! See, I’m not the only one that feels that way about Obamavoters! (lol) Rather than road rage I tend towards radio rage! When I hear a radio playing Carrie Underwood my natural tendency is to want to smash it with a sledgehammer (or at a minimum change the station)!
Recently I was following a Toyota Prius in LA that had a bumper sticker that said “Another latte sipping, Prius driving, NPR liberal for Obama”! If that won’t make me react with violence, nothing will! (lol)
March 26, 2010 at 8:35 pm
Because he’s a dictator himself?
Because this law was passed on a purely partisan basis against the will of the majority of the people.
March 26, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Actually, the majority of the Americans agree with the majority of the bill.
March 26, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Rick, I had a McCain & Palin sticker on my rear bumper and while I was shopping someone crossed out the L in Palin with a magic marker and I ended up with McCain & Pain. LOL!
March 26, 2010 at 9:17 pm
Actually, the majority of the Americans agree with the majority of the bill.
Not according to any recent poll I’ve seen:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/obama_and_democrats_health_care_plan-1130.html
There was a slight majority of people favoring it in ONE Gallup poll back in January, but nothing recently.
March 26, 2010 at 9:28 pm
From what I have seen, polling numbers have been all over the place.
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/25/new-polls-public-still-skeptical-of-health-care-law/?scp=1&sq=health%20care%20bill%20poll&st=cse
March 26, 2010 at 9:37 pm
Razor X, you have to realize Stormy is probably getting her “facts/news” from liberal friendly NPR or The Huffington Puffington Compost Pile or mainstream leftist leaning media outlets (ie literally everything except for World Net Daily, Rush Limbaugh, or FOX News). Its only those accurately informed conservatives and patriots who fiercely oppose this bill because they are the only ones who grasp all of its evil ramifications!
PS – Today I was reading Obama’s back door plan to pay for Odumbocare is a nationwide “Value Added Tax” you pay on purchases like they have in Europe and Australia! These added “federal sales tax” rates average around 20% in those countries that use them. But since this will not be a standard “income tax” El Dumbo will proclaim he didn’t raise income taxes to fund Odumbocare! What a despicable, f’in socialist moron….
March 26, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Rick: Try polls that look at individual parts of the Bill, not push polls designed to get a fox spews result.

Useful site for you when watching Fox, Rick:

March 26, 2010 at 10:11 pm
Wow, I didn’t know this turned into the Drudge Report.
March 26, 2010 at 10:19 pm
I dunno bout the Drudge Report, but let’s cut out the political discussion and get back to country music.
March 26, 2010 at 11:01 pm
So Brady, is true, that according to Dan you are anti-Courtyard Hounds? And probably mean to animals and small children?
March 26, 2010 at 11:27 pm
Dan’s comments were directed at Brody, but personally, nothing I’ve heard has really appealed to me and I wouldn’t consider ‘em country. I’m not anti-Courtyard Hounds, though.
March 26, 2010 at 11:37 pm
My mistake-I only looked at the last name.
March 27, 2010 at 11:50 am
For Brooks and Dunn’s choice…it’s hard because I’m torn by their very first success of “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” and “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”. I would much rather hear them sing “Red Dirt Road” since it’s such a great song to sing and definitely B&D style. I’ve decided to pick BSB song since it’s an anthem of theirs just as much as Pure Country is THE song of George Strait…
March 27, 2010 at 12:00 pm
Weeping Jesus on the Cross…now I know Country music is full of politics…Thanks a lot you guys…since when has art become a debatable science??? I’ll take the artists and songs that I thoroughly enjoy with me on a camping trip while the rest of you can banter ill-will tarheeling rants to my deaf ears.
March 29, 2010 at 9:18 am
“I wouldn’t consider ‘em country. I’m not anti-Courtyard Hounds, though.”
Uh-Oh, Brady. If there’s one thing people around here like more than a political debate, its a debate on what is and isnt country…come on people, let’s get it on!!!
March 29, 2010 at 9:38 am
I like what I have heard from The Courtyard Hounds. However, had I heard it without knowing who sang it I would have thought “Oh, Sheryl Crow has new music out.”
March 29, 2010 at 10:03 am
I agree with Stormy.
March 29, 2010 at 2:30 pm
Re: Courtyard Hounds – - Got the sample tracks to listen to from the label, and it’s definitely not something I’d listen to regularly. It’s well done, for what it is, but it’s not really my kinda music, and it definitely isn’t country. It’s more folk-Rock. In Canada, it’s the kinda stuff that would have a home on MuchMoreMusic, which I think, is the equivalent of your VH1.
Re: Brooks and Dunn song – - I think I’d dig a ballad like Neon Moon, That Ain’t No Way To Go, or even, Workin’ On My Next Broken Heart.
March 29, 2010 at 2:35 pm
To be fair though, I do own most of Sheryl Crow’s cds.
