Country/Americana Lineup For SXSW 2007

SXSW has been going on in Austin for the past week, but the concerts are just starting to get good today. I went through the giant list at Austin360 and tried to pick out the best of bunch representing country this year. I haven’t heard of everyone on the list, so there’s a good chance I missed some artists, and some of the ones I had to confirm on MySpace that they were country. But, below you’ll find the best of the country artists in bold along with the event title and venue.

Wednesday - January 14

• Guitartown/Conqueroo SXSW 2007 Kickoff: with Ed Pettersen, Adrienne Young, Randy Weeks, Tom Freund, Michele Shocked, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Walter Tragert, Pam Tillis, James Mcmurtry, Jon Dee Graham, The Silos, Patty Hurst Shifter, The Summer Wardrobe, Tommy Ramone at Mother Egans. Party starts at 11:45 a.m.
• South by San Jose: The Steps (7 p.m.), The Salvi Family Band (6 p.m.), Suzanna Choffel (5 p.m.), The Tiny Adventurers (4 p.m.), The Moonhangers (3 p.m.). Free, open to public at Jo’s Coffee.
• Palo Duro & Shiner Showcase at Waterloo Ice House (600 N. La.m.ar Blvd.): Miles from Nowhere (8 p.m.), Darryl Lee Rush (8:45 p.m.), Eleven Hundred Springs (9:30 p.m.), Two Tons of Steel (10:15 p.m.), Trent Summar & The New Row Mob (11 p.m.). Free and open to the public.

  I’ll definitely be trying my best to attend this event. On the Waterloo Ice House website it lists the festivities actually beginning around 2pm with Jason Allen and Brandon Jenkins.

Thursday - January 15

  Look at Dale Watson playing three venues on Friday, that’s dedication. If you could somehow catch the Billy Jo Shaver performance and make it here without missing too much it’d be well worth it. This is a pretty kickass lineup. My girlfriend bought tickets to see Roger Creager for her birthday, so I’ll be down in Gruene for that show, otherwise Scholz Garten is the place to be.
Saturday - January 17

  Once again, Palo Duro has the show to be at for country music lovers. Good thing I’ll catch the show on Wednesday because I’ll be out at the backyard for Last Of The Breed. I’m also going to try and catch the James McMurtry show at 1:45.

There’s a ton of Americana artists that I didn’t highlight either because they aren’t my style, or I haven’t heard of them. So unless you like most of the people I listed, it’d be a good idea to check the master list at Austin360. All in all, I think there’s a pretty solid lineup of country artists at SXSW, and if you’re not too fond of these guys you can always check out the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo here in Austin, they’ve got some more mainstream performances going on each night.
