Country/Americana Lineup For SXSW 2007
SXSW has been going on in Austin for the past week, but the concerts are just starting to get good today. I went through the giant list at Austin360 and tried to pick out the best of bunch representing country this year. I haven’t heard of everyone on the list, so there’s a good chance I missed some artists, and some of the ones I had to confirm on MySpace that they were country. But, below you’ll find the best of the country artists in bold along with the event title and venue.
Wednesday - January 14
- Guitartown/Conqueroo SXSW 2007 Kickoff: with Ed Pettersen, Adrienne Young, Randy Weeks, Tom Freund, Michele Shocked, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Walter Tragert, Pam Tillis, James Mcmurtry, Jon Dee Graham, The Silos, Patty Hurst Shifter, The Summer Wardrobe, Tommy Ramone at Mother Egans. Party starts at 11:45 a.m.

————————–
I’ll definitely be trying my best to attend this event. On the Waterloo Ice House website it lists the festivities actually beginning around 2pm with Jason Allen and Brandon Jenkins.
Thursday - January 15

————————–
This one would be pretty sweet if it didn’t require an invitation.
Friday - January 16
- Austin Music Magazine Showcase: Golden Bear (4 p.m.), Carrie Rodriguez (3 p.m.), Dale Watson (2 p.m.) and more at Jovita’s.
- Fat Caddy Records & House of Mercy Records (UK) Spring Showcase with Austin Collins, Band of Heathens, Black Water Gospel, Macon Greyson, Brian Keane, Bex Marshall at the Molotov Lounge (1 p.m.)

- Texas Music Magazine Party: Doug Moreland, Spain Colored Orange, Sunny Sweeney, Dale Watson, Carrie Rodriguez, Johnny Bush, Two Tons of Steel at Scholz Garten.
————————–
Look at Dale Watson playing three venues on Friday, that’s dedication. If you could somehow catch the Billy Jo Shaver performance and make it here without missing too much it’d be well worth it. This is a pretty kickass lineup. My girlfriend bought tickets to see Roger Creager for her birthday, so I’ll be down in Gruene for that show, otherwise Scholz Garten is the place to be.
- Mojo’s Mayhem at the Continental Club: Allen Oldies Band (10 a.m.), The Stingers (10:45 a.m.), The Beasts of Bourbon (11:30 a.m.), The Mother Truckers (12:15 p.m.), Jon Dee Graham (1 p.m.), James McMurtry (1:45 p.m.), Chili Cold Blood (2:45 p.m.), Mike Barfield & Casper Rawls (3:45 p.m.), Dash Rip Rock (4 p.m.), New Duncan Imperials w/ Special Guest Mojo Nixon (4:45 p.m.), Bobby Lounge (5:30 p.m.). Free and open to the public. Free jalapeno pancakes served during Allen Oldies Band set.

Free and open to the public.
- Palo Duro Beer & BBQ Party at The Broken Spoke (3201 S. Lamar Blvd.): Walt Wilkins & The Mystiqueros (6 p.m.), Trent Summar & The New Row Mob (7 p.m.), The Derailers (9 p.m.). Free and open to the public.

Once again, Palo Duro has the show to be at for country music lovers. Good thing I’ll catch the show on Wednesday because I’ll be out at the backyard for Last Of The Breed. I’m also going to try and catch the James McMurtry show at 1:45.
There’s a ton of Americana artists that I didn’t highlight either because they aren’t my style, or I haven’t heard of them. So unless you like most of the people I listed, it’d be a good idea to check the master list at Austin360. All in all, I think there’s a pretty solid lineup of country artists at SXSW, and if you’re not too fond of these guys you can always check out the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo here in Austin, they’ve got some more mainstream performances going on each night.

Honeyhoney isn’t country. That’s what lead singer Suzanne Santo, one half of the Venice, California, duo will tell you. But the sultry-voiced Santo and her musical partner Ben Jaffe have together created a sound that if not technically country, nonetheless boasts considerably country undertones.
In an attempt to discover and highlight the best music every month, We'll be publishing a list of the best songs released throughout that period. Here's Brady Vercher's picks for September.
Toby Keith - “God Love Her” Solid, though neither life-changing nor earth-moving; “God Love Her” fits well beside Keith’s better material, an uptempo romp that, for better or worse, has no intention of even pretending to be your grandpa’s country music.
Hank Williams III - “Six Pack of Beer” It’s hard not to love “Six Pack of Beer” for its style—Williams remains one of the most unique artists of his generation, and the musicianship and arrangements utilized on his records can elicit truly euphoric reactions.
Kenny Chesney & Mac McAnally - “Down The Road” There is a somberness in Chesney’s delivery that perfectly matches McAnally’s; this understated vocal performance is his best in years.
Jason Michael Carroll - “Where I’m From” In a format already oversaturated with songs about celebrating rural roots, “Where I’m From” begins a step behind and never catches up.
Emerson Drive - "Belongs To You" It's a song as well-constructed as could be expected (considering that it is made up almost entirely of clichés), but which nonetheless feels like an exercise in mediocrity.
Becky Schlegel - "Jenny" It's a study in interpretation and supportive arrangement that maximize the emotional significance of the lyric, reflecting artistry without becoming inaccessible.
For 23 year-old Jeannie C. Riley, the top of the mountain was reached in August 1968, when “Harper Valley PTA” jumped from No. 81 to No. 1 on the Billboard (all-genres) Singles Chart.
