Country Singer Sammy Kershaw Throws His Hat Into Political Race
- The next lieutenant governor of Louisiana just might be country singer Sammy Kershaw. He officially entered the race yesterday as the Republican candidate.
- Faith Hill appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show yesterday and talked about The Incident. You know, the one where a fan groped Tim McGraw and she chastised the fan from the stage.
“I didn’t. I didn’t watch it happen. My husband found me underneath the stage just before we go out to do my duet … for the last segment of the show. He tells me what happened and he was livid. I mean, he was red and fuming. He basically just reprimanded her, so I thought, basically, she doesn’t need any more attention and I’m going to not deal with it – so I decided to go about my business, and I’m here to have fun and give the fans a great show,” Hill said. “But really, I’m from Mississippi, so what I really wanted to do is kick her you-know-what. You know what I’m saying? I mean, c’mon. I mean, how disrespectful! And plus, it’s like sexual harassment.”
Oh yea, her hits CD comes out on October 2nd and she’s already disclosed the list of songs that will be on the album.
- A new music-based reality series, The Hitmen of Music Row, will be airing on Great American Country later this month. The show will revolve around Bob DiPiero, Tony Mullins, Jeffrey Steele and Craig Wiseman as they travel to “Nashville, Atlanta, New York and Las Vegas and presents a behind-the-scenes look at the songwriting process.” I’m not a huge TV person, but I might actually DVR this one.
- The CMT Blog scored a post from Jack Ingram giving his account of how he ended up in a cage while opening for Brad Paisley.
- John Goodspeed has a little snippet on Rodney Hayden:
Hayden spent two years writing songs in the Music City with some of the top names in the business and abruptly moved back to Texas just before last Christmas.
Asked what he discovered there, he shot back, “I learned that I like it down here a whole lot.”
If you want to know more about this “Robert Earl Keen protégé” be sure to check out the Q&A feature we did with him back in February.
- The rich musical history of Luckenbach, TX is punctuated by Jerry Jeff Walker’s 1973 live recording, ¡Viva Terlingua!. Last year, artists gathered to celebrate the heritage of the little town and Walker’s recording. Doug Freeman says “Luckenbach! Compadres! raises the bar on Walker’s performances by raising the roof of the dance hall, the ball-cap-meets-cowboy-hat crowd’s enthusiasm turning the tribute into a true celebration.” He rates the album four stars.
- Jim Caligiuri gave the Billy Joe Shaver Storyteller album three and a half stars.
- Take Country Back has a link to the full album stream of The Best of Crystal Gayle. They also mention that “2007 marks the 30th anniversary of Gayle’s chart-crossing smash, ‘Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,’ recognized by ASCAP as one of the ten most often performed country songs of the 20th Century.”
- Not only is he a talented musician, but Randy Kohrs makes a pretty good interior designer as well.
- WFMU has a blog post that says that it wasn’t always necessary to dole out huge amounts of cash to get your song played on radio.
For several decades, another time-tested method was to shamelessly hitch your tune to an already established single, a phenomenon known as the Answer Song.
They then go on to list 28 songs and the “answer songs” to those songs. An example is Judy Miller’s song “Queen of the House” as an answer to Roger Miller’s “King of the Road”. I know there has to be some more, can you think of any off the top of your head? (via Take Country Back)
