Concert Review: Brooks And Dunn ‘Rock My World’
Most of the performers I’ve seen at the San Antonio rodeo are driven to the stage in a truck, but Brooks & Dunn walked out to the stage where the band and three back up singers were waiting for them. They were everything you see on TV; Ronnie with his tight pants, long boots, and his trademark hair. Kix was his usual goofy self. Kix introduced Ronnie as being from Texas and then told how he was from Louisiana, which he declared was part of East Texas. That got the crowd laughing. They sounded great, and had the crowd entertained the entire time.
While Kix sang, Ronnie played cowbell and occasionally threw his drumstick into the audience, then someone would throw him another to play with and then he’d repeat the routine. He caught every single drumstick the guy threw him, pretty impressive. Ronnie just blew me away, his vocals are one of a kind, and when he hits a certain note, it electrifies my whole body. They told stories about the first time they played in San Antonio, which made me realize that these are real genuine, laid back guys, to remember where they play and specific things about the places. Ronnie joked about a stylist trying to change his style. He said the lady looked at this boots, and he said, “I don’t think so,” then she looked up at his ripped-in-the-knee pants and he said, “I don’t think so,” so then she told him about something that everyone is big on now, he moved his guitar and there was a huge belt buckle and he asked if it was too big for Texas and the crowd went crazy.
They did a great job balancing the songs sang between the two of them and at one point, Kix went to the fence and pulled a lady into the arena and danced with her, which was the sweetest thing ever. They ended with Only In America. Three U.S. Marines walked around the arena and received a standing ovation, which was the perfect way to end the concert. I can’t even think of anything they could have done better, Brooks & Dunn was, hands down, one of the best concerts I have ever seen.

I’ve really soured on Brooks and Dunn’s album sound in recent years. Their song selection hasn’t aged well and is largely unsubstantive, and while Ronnie Dunn has one of the greatest contemporary country voices I think that his interpretive skills are subpar. While Brooks and Dunn have had lots of big hits, none of them are particularly memorable.
However, they’re definitely on my “too see” list. It seems like their less than substantive hits would just be fun in concert and Ronnie’s voice would be impressively powerful in a concert setting when one is not critiquing interpretation.
The only thing that suprised me was your comment about Ronnie and Kix sharing singing duties. My friends that have seen B&D live have said that Ronnie made the show, and I can’t even remember the last single that Kix sang lead on. I remember “Lost and Found,” but that was off the first album. “South of Santa Fe?”

I don’t think many of Kix’s songs are released as singles, but he does sing a few songs on each of the albums. He sang four or five songs last night, he sang one he said they would like to put on an album, I’m not sure of the name. He also sang ‘She Likes To Get Out Of Town,’ which was on their latest album, Hillbilly Deluxe. He sang a few others, but I can’t remember right now.

Ronnie Dunn has the greatest vocal range in the business. His control and ability to hit and hold notes are unbelievable. When your talking about just the voice, Dunn has it.

The Austin City Limits episode with Brooks & Dunn is probably one of the best ever! It was recorded in 2001 or so and they played most of their older, better hits – giving everything new life.
I’m suprised, shocked even that they haven’t released a LIVE CD yet.

My daughter’s very first concert (6 months) was at the San Antonio rodeo. It was Willie Nelson. I don’t care for Hall and Oates ….er Brooks and Dunn but I will allways have a soft stop for the SA Rodeo (beside it getting the Spurs out on the road and off their duffs!)

The Spurs stunk it up this year during the annual road trip, at least compared to years before. I’m glad they’ve settled into their groove lately.

It’s up to 9 right now, and should increase to 10 in a row after they whoop up on Portland tonight.

texastentalist: Is your daughter still a Willie fan? The SA rodeo looks like such a big venue for a show, but that revolving stage looks cool. And I like the pictures of Willie riding out on a truck. I’d like to see Willie there sometime.

Well she’s 6 now and I wouldn’t call her a fan. She’s
more into Sponge Bob and Teen Titons than some old hippie cowboy. But she’ll come around, it’s in her genes.
