Clint Black – “Long Cool Woman”
Songwriters: Allan Clarke, Roger Cook, and Roger Greenaway
What’s happening in a world when Clint Black releases only the second single of his career that wasn’t written himself and it follows the first? And when is he going to give his next album a title and release it? It seems like he’s grasping at straws now to try and get back in the game. On top of that, nothing better exemplifies John Rich’s assertion that classic rock and modern country music are the exact same thing better than this cover of “Long Cool Woman” by the classic rock group The Hollies. The intro is slightly updated and sounds like something from a late 90’s alternative band, but it’s hard to fault Black for today’s radio climate and his signature twang (what I like to call his mojo) adds an element of country to the record.
Back in his review of Black’s first single, “The Strong One,” from his upcoming, untitled album, Jim Malec stated that it “has one major problem, however, in terms of commercial viability–it simply does not fit a current radio format which has, as a standard, songs jam-packed with fast-paced, hard hitting lyrical imagery.” As if Black had read that review or read the market the same way after “The Strong One” peaked in the upper 30s, this single addresses every one of those issues. “Long Cool Woman” is definitely fast-paced and if “A pair of .45’s made me open my eyes / My temperature started to rise / She was a long cool woman in a black dress” isn’t hard hitting imagery, I don’t know what it is.
Despite my apprehensions about the song being more rock than country–ignore what John Rich said–it’s still a catchy lyric with a good vocal performance by Clint Black, and we can always use more of his mojo on radio when he’s performing good material.

He’s looking for another “Desperado.” I don’t really consider it a non-self written single because it’s so obviously a cover.

I thoroughly enjoy his rendition of “Desperado,” but did he ever release it as a single? I wasn’t sure if he had released any other covers as singles, either.

I looked it up and it charted at #54 from unsolicited airplay, which is not as good as I remembered. I still hear it a lot, so he must do pretty well with recurrent spins.

Clint’s cover of “Desperado” is off the Eagles tribute album “Common Thread” and I must admit I prefer Alan Jackson’s cover of “Tequila Sunrise” to Clint’s effort, which I consider a bit too “relaxed” in pacing.
As for the new single at hand, I was in high school back in the early 1970’s when the original by The Hollies hit the airwaves and I loved it. Sometimes its best not to mess with classics, but Clint does an okay job with this one and it might revive his career at Top 40 country radio. Anything that gets a fantastic traditional artist like Clint back on the mainstream country airwaves is alright by me.
I’m the resident Aussie country music fan around these parts and wish you all could hear Laurel Edwards’ cover of the early Linda Ronstadt hit “Different Drum” or Darren Coggan’s cover of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”. When it comes to doing quality countrified covers of classic pop/rock hits, some Aussies really have a handle on it…..

Looks like Clint Black is releasing a digital EP in March before releasing an album with the same songs in May.

I LOVE Clint Black’s version of Desperado.

I love this song…Clint is really good at “countrifying” a rocking song. I listened to the EP on iTunes (they seemed to have added $2 more to the $1.99 price it was before) and I didn’t care for what I heard of the other three songs.
