Chris Cagle Arrested For Punching Fan’s Boyfriend In the Face

  • After performing at a charity benefit Chris Cagle reportedly punched a fan’s boyfriend in the face. Reports say that Cagle declined to sign an autograph for a woman who then became verbally abusive. Bouncers were escorting the woman and her boyfriend out of the club when an undisclosed incident occurred at which time Cagle allegedly attempted to rearrange the man’s face.
  • Whatever happened to country artists that average, working class people could relate to?
  • Cybergrass put together a gift guide for those bluegrass fans in your family and even has a few that we’ve talked about on The 9513, too.
  • A few country songs made it to “The Cadillac Comp” posted by Nine Bullets. Another good one to check out that didn’t make the list is Ashley Monroe’s “Hank’s Cadillac”.
  • Peter Kohan did the math and concludes that 38% of the Top 100 Country Songs of the year came from independent labels.

I don’t know if this is a tipping point for the rise to prominence of the indie label scene in Nashville, because a label’s individual financial health and future is based on much more than radio airplay. But it ought to be a signal that the major labels are not the only place to find talented, charismatic artists creating commercial art.

  • Patsy Cline’s “Crazy” was listed as one of the 23 songs that should never be covered again, by The A.V. Club.

No other voice in country music–or, perhaps, any kind of music–could convey gut-wrenching vulnerability and loneliness like Patsy Cline’s. Granted, her entire catalogue basically boils down to “Why you treat me so bad?”, but no one asked that better. That voice makes “Crazy”–written by a young Willie Nelson–especially haunting.

(Thanks to Peter for calling my attention to the list)

  • Eamon McLoughlin has a brief rundown of the BMI hosted event for four Texas songwriters that included Bill Carter, Monte Warden, Bruce Robison, and Sunny Sweeney.
  • Carrie Underwood has the best-selling female country debut in history and just recently surpassed the double platinum (2 million) mark for her sophomore album.
  • A new Alan Jackson album is dropping on March 4th. All of the songs on his 15th studio album, Good Time, were written by him.
  • While attending Vanderbilt University Dierks Bentley used to head to The Station Inn to hear bluegrass pickers perform. Peter Cooper says it was that bluegrass experience that “helped to ground Bentley’s musical vision into something grittier than the gloss that often passes for contemporary country.”
  • Steve Hyden reviewed the Top 20 country songs from Billboard’s Hot 100 during the week of December 1st. Dierks Bentley’s “Free And Easy (Down the Road I Go)”, Josh Turner’s “Firecracker”, and Sugarland’s “Stay” received the highest grades.
  • The audience on The Ellen DeGeneres Show went nuts after witnessing 15-year old Vince Mira’s performance of “Ring of Fire”. To top it all off Ellen presented Mira with a $3,500 guitar. (via Twang Nation)

Ellen, Ellen, Ellen. That kid simply does a Johnny Cash imitation. Probably knocks ‘em dead at the local karaoke. A nationally known show host seldom wins picking the next superstar.

About Chris Cagle punching out a fan’s boyfriend, I don’t know him nor have I met him during an after show fan greet. He’s probably a great guy full of integrity. The incident probably happened as reported.

But my girlfriend and I did meet All-American good guy Phil Vassar after a show. If I was younger and less secure, I might have been in his face about where he put his hands and how ‘friendly’ he was to my girlfriend. There has to be a smoother way for a star to pick up chicks and that is the main reason I believe Cagle probably wasn’t out of line.

i haven’t met chris cagle, either. based on reports, i can assume he’s a jerk. since i don’t know him nor have i met him.

moral of the story: just sign the autograph. don’t get above your raisin’.

Other reports of the incident that I’ve read say that he signed multiple things for the woman before declining to the autograph that sent her over the edge and ultimately led to the assault.

I’ve met Cagle once and he signed multiple autographs while being very friendly to fans. I’d likely be on his side in this case. Some fans (perhaps this woman) assume that all artists are their property and should sign multiple autographs. Honestly, even if he didn’t sign anything for her, he can decide when ‘enough’s enough’ for autographs. Athlete’s did/do it all the time.

As for Vassar, perhaps acts like that are why he’s getting/got divorced.

Cagle is one messsed up dude. serious insecurity and anger issues.
if everythings alright..then somethings wrong. I witnessed him cussing out/screaming at his band/crew while sitting side stage one night during a show, he then immediately starts sobbing like a girl…who would want to work with that?
