Chris Cagle Arrested After Getting Bonked With Umbrella
- Chris Cagle and his girlfriend were arrested on domestic assault charges. The two were arguing outside a bar and apparently things escalated when they returned to Cagle’s home. Cagle has a bump on his head from his girlfriend hitting him on the head with an umbrella, while his girlfriend is scuffed up from him hitting her with her purse. Both were considered to be primary aggressors and taken to jail. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

What do you fear the most?
I think on a real gut level, that I’m going to get onstage and forget the words to a song. That’s not a terrible fear. It’s happened a few times — the audiences are very forgiving. I think the idea that I wouldn’t be able to sing any more — that would be very difficult for me. So much of who I am is wrapped up in it — I’m not talking about the celebrity of it, I’m talking about work and what you do well. - Contract Magazine has an article discussing the recent expansion of CMT and the way the layout was planned to increase collaboration. We've labored long and hard to come up with our list of the Top 10 Country Albums of 2008. Click here to see who claimed the honor of the year's top album, as chosen by The 9513's staff and writers.
Don’t confuse disappointing with worst, as that list would most likely be dominated by obscure indie knockoff bands along with a couple of mainstream releases. There has to be a modicum of expectation that’s dashed upon the release of an album for it to qualify for the year’s most disappointing.
Join host Kelly Dearmore as he shines the light on several noteworthy album releases you might have missed and interviews various artists, from Sarah Borges to Trent Willmon and Reckless Kelly to Wade Bowen, in the first two episode of The 9513 podcast.

I thought that Hough’s Studio 330 performance was pretty good, but that production has a way of making just about everyone look good. She is an entertainer, and you can see the dancer in her performances, which are entertaining even if they’re a little “big” for my tastes (her recent performance on The View is a good example).

Everyone should go check out Randy Kohrs on MySpace. He’s got some good stuff. http://www.myspace.com/randykohrs
See, that’s not the same Chris Cagle that just put out an album of fluff.
Speaking of fluff, Julianne Hough’s “That Song In My Head” is waayyy too fluffy for my tastes, but I thought the 330 Sessions version of “Hide Your Matches” was better than the album cut. The production on the album goes a little overboard, but either way, she seems to shed that sultriness or whatever you’d call it as the song progresses and acts like she has to show off her voice.
Laura Bryna’s repress/ad campaign seems to be a little desperate. Didn’t she partner with St. Jude’s on a song from the original release? They’re both worthy purposes, but it doesn’t feel right to me to latch on to those causes to sell an album. She could just release the new song digitally on her website.

Man. Chris Cagle has some really bad luck. If I were him, I’d stay away from the ladies for a while.

I like a good bit of John Hiatt’s stuff, but this song was pure anthrax for the ear. I actually heard it on the radio in Dallas yesterday and realized that any song that contains the lyric “cat pee” can not be good. I dont care if June Carter Cash had written “Ring of Fire” with “cat pee” in it, that wouldve been enough to make the song suck…bad.
May 28, 2008 at 12:24 pm Permalink
I heard him perform it when he was in Austin and actually liked it a lot better live. He has a similar “cat pee” moment later in the album when he throws in the line “I thought of our first date back in Nashville / we shared the pupu platter, you enjoyed it with such gusto I took it for a sign.” But overall, for those who like his voice, it’s a good album.

I am sure you’re right. His voice is truly distinctive and his song, “My Old Friend” is an all-time fave of mine, for sure…
May 28, 2008 at 1:06 pm Permalink
I dunno, a song about falling into a burning ring of cat pee sounds pretty intriguing.

Though I am still a little hesitant to say I like her music, (I haven’t heard the album yet) I have to say from what I heard on the Studio 330 sessions- Julianne Hough can sing. I really liked “About Life and “Hide Your Matches”. I still say she’s a little tooooo happy to be a country singer ….(Are you supposed to smile that much in country music???)

I Love Julianne new song “That song in my head” and you can be to happy for country music? Not so much
May 28, 2008 at 2:26 pm Permalink
Maybe if Julianne Hough fell into a burning ring of cat pee she wouldn’t be so happy any longer…..

Chris Cagle-all I can say is that he has major devils inside him. I can’t say that I have ever really heard him give an interview that was humble or mature or adult. He can’t seem to get his life in order, or at least make it into a great country song. Too bad. I see guys like him in court everyday as a lawyer. They always seem to be chasing their own tail around and around- unable to stop.

Speaking of Julianne Hough, check out this article from CountryStandardTime:
“Julianne Hough Debuts at Number One!
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 — Newcomer Julianne Hough did pretty well for herself with her self-titled debut disc - it debuted at number one on the country charts, which will be officially released Thursday. She had the third best selling overall album in the U.S..
“Country music has always been my passion,” she said. “Having the opportunity to make a record in Nashville and then getting to share that with the world is beyond my wildest imagination. A big thanks to Luke Lewis and the entire Mercury staff.” Lewis is head of the label.
The Utah native, who gained fame for winning “Dancing with the Stars” twice, takes over the top spot from Toby Keith’s “35 Biggest Hits.”
When I saw Julianne’s CD had sold out over the weekend at my local best Buy store, I figured something was up…..

I love the title of today’s blog. I laughed out loud when I read about the “spat” on another site. I’d be so embarrassed to have that public! The umbrella vs. the purse.
As for an earlier question, you can’t be too happy in today’s country music environment! Just ask Sugarland… (As for me, I prefer sassy, smart and tart, rather than pert, cute and happy…ugh!)
May 28, 2008 at 8:13 pm Permalink
I wonder what the heck she had in that purse? That umbrella must’ve hurt…teach him to use a purse as a weapon.:)
May 28, 2008 at 8:19 pm Permalink
Leann, I was wondering why he even HAD her purse. Or why was it the closest thing in reach?
May 28, 2008 at 8:21 pm Permalink
Okay, I just watched some of Julianne’s sessions. Don’t hit me, but she sounds a little like Jessica Simpson. They both have voices that sound very “affected.” Does that make sense? I just want to tell them both to knock it off and then maybe they’ll sound better.
Oh yes, I’ll post it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv8UpZYLkpc
Does anyone else hear it?

I know nothing at all about Julianne Hough — except that she is really hot based on the pics I’ve seen on the web. However, I’m finding it really hard to keep an open mind about her music, because:
1. I’m really down on anything new coming out of Nashville these days
2. Every time I’ve visited Amazon.com over the past several weeks, I’ve greeted with an ad for her CD. I’m tired of her already and I haven’t even heard her sing.
May 28, 2008 at 8:33 pm Permalink
I’m still digesting Hiatt’s new record, but I’d say ON WITH YOU is the standout track, not OLD DAYS.
May 28, 2008 at 8:35 pm Permalink
Razor X, I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps he started off as being a dutiful boyfriend and serving as her purse carrier and suddenly turned bitter about it?:)
May 28, 2008 at 10:20 pm Permalink
Laura Bryna does seem desperate. A new song isn’t gonna make that turkey of a record any better. Guess she still figures her pretty face (to some) will get her far.
As for Cagle, he must’ve had some horrible stuff early in his life as he seems to fall for women who are wrong for him. He should stay out of relationships and work on himself first.
May 28, 2008 at 10:51 pm Permalink
Lynn, I think Julianne actually sounds like a Faith Hill wannabe. There are some similarities between her and Jessica. Neither of them are any good, but Julianne is not as bad as Jessica is. Music like this is why I stopped listening to country radio.

I’m also a little turned off by the way Luke found her appropriate for Merucry and not Lost Highway.

is it just a rumour that chris cagle is doing a cover of “man i feel like a woman” next?
