- In this week’s Take 6 Tuesday, Blake Shelton lists the six people in country music that have actually made him giddy.
- Where was Ryan Bingham when he won an award at the Golden Globes? At the bar having a beer.
- San Antonio Express-News‘ Jim Beal Jr. on the new Adam Carroll & Michael O’Connor record Hard Times:
The pair has hammered together a collection of songs that take unvarnished looks at not-so-beautiful losers who populate the margins: the has-beens, the never-will-bes. With songs such as the title track, “Gulf Coast Losers,” “New Year’s Eve” and “Throw a Nickel,” the duo effectively nails hardscrabble reality while occasionally leavening looks at tough subjects and rough people with dark humor. With the line “a bar tab twice as long as Billy Gibbons’ beard,” even losers win.
- It’s that time again: Farce the Music’s Country Day. This month’s targets include Reba, Sarah Buxton, Trailer Choir, and more.
- Reba McEntire dispenses the secret to George Strait’s longevity: “He’s got great songs.”
- Country California Fake News: Hank III’s First Draft of New Monday Night Football Theme Deemed Inappropriate
- Tune in to WSM tomorrow from 8-11 p.m. for a radio tribute to Carl Smith. Eddie Stubbs will play many of Smith’s most important records along with excerpts from an interview he conducted with Smith in 1997.
- Country Haiku:
Tough little boys grow
And become babies again
A few wear diapers - CMT posted an excerpt from the book True Adventures With the King of Bluegrass in which the author discovers Jimmy Martin’s whiskey preference.
- Listen to an interview with, and performances by, Carolina Chocolate Drops.
- The year 1994 might have been a good year for the roses, but Alan Jackson apparently thought it was a good year for a beard, too.
- This week in country music history according to Country California:
1974 – Tom T. Hall tops the Billboard country singles chart with a list song called “I Love.” A whole generation of soon-to-be Nashville songwriters takes note.
-
Music Fog:
- Todd Snider – “America’s Favorite Pastime”
- Kristen Kelly & Modern Day Drifters – “Payments Are Due”

First Charlie Daniels films a Geico commercial that surpasses anything that blasted gecko ever did, and now he’s not missing shows after a stroke. THAT’S a man.

Trailer’s album covers are top notch as usual. The Garth Brooks album cover reminds me of a restaurant they recently tore down at the corner of Fairfax and Pico to replace with a Walgreens drug store. Located just south of a stretch of Fairfax known as “Little Ethiopia” the restaurant was named “Mo Betta Meaty Meat Burgers”. I’m guessing the owner died of a heart attack…
I’m glad to hear Charlie Daniels is doing okay. Some folks just never learn to slow down…
Blake Shelton’s list actually includes 7 people, so what is this saying about Kellie Pickler’s inclusion? Maybe she made him giddy in a different sort of way, kind of like when Chris Matthews sees pictures of Odumbo in a bathing suit. Hmm…
Thanks for the news about the Carl Smith tribute on WSM Thursday night and the Carolina Chocolate Drops link. The CCD’s are just one of those bands you have to see perform live to fully appreciate.
Wow, that Kristen Kelly is a real cutie! Her vocals are okay and the song wasn’t particularly unique although competent, but she is well worth watching! (I am so shallow…)

Rick’s Random Tidbits: Here’s something from Country Standard Time that kind of caught me off guard:
“Katie Armiger Puts Out New Single From Upcoming CD:
Wednesday, January 20, 2010:
Katie Armiger released a new single, Kiss Me Now, via iTunes in advance of a Feb. 1 add date at country radio. The song is the first single from Armiger’s forthcoming third album on Cold River Records. This week, the song was the third most downloaded song by radio stations behind Jack Ingram and Luke Bryan.
Armiger wrote the song along with Lyric Street recording artist Sarah Buxton and Nashville songwriter Blair Daly.”
Rick’s Comment: The third most downloaded song at Top 40 country radio stations this week? Were the radio station folks just downloading it for their personal MP3 players or are they actually going to give it an on air spin? It appears Cold River is standing behind Katie regardless of how much music she sells (or doesn’t sell). Does Katie’s daddy own (or finance) Cold River or are they just all in waiting for her to break big some day? Hmm…

Is it me, or does anyone else agree that Gretchen Wilson’s greatest hits package is too early?? I can only think of 3 songs off the top of my head that are considerable mentions…everything else are filters or sub-par. :(

The obligatory greatest-hits album is an inevitability whenever an artist and label (ahem) part ways.
