I was happy to see that Peter Cooper’s lengthy obit on Allen Shelton ran in full in the print of edition of yesterday’s Tennessean. One correction – Allen did not make many solo projects. I can only find two including the one Peter referred to, which was recorded and originally issued back in the mid-70s; the 2001 date mentioned in the obituary is actually when it was reissued on CD. In any event, Allen was a superb banjo player and a really nice guy, and I’m glad that his passing was treated as one having some significance.

Wow, there are a lot of great links here today! From Austin City Limits, to Music Fog, to the Americana Music Awards videos, its a cornucopia of great music! Thank you 9513!

I really like the self titled debut album by The Tejas Brothers from 2008. Just think of how big of Top 40 country radio hit the song “I Can’t Sleep” would be if those closed minded stations would just play it! Crikey!

PS – Check Mead wrote “Up On Edge Hill” with Trent Summar. Those two should tour together as their music would appeal to the same type of audience, umm like me! (lol)

The Lance Smith leaving thing brings back memories of him in Meredith Edwards’ video for “A Rose Is A Rose” Emily West was also in that one.

Rick: Chuck Mead needs to get back with Gary Bennett! Trent Summar though, man he needs a new album, what’s the news on him. Also needs to reissue Hank Flamingo. Best country dope smoking song there ever was.

RE: Dolly Parton….just what Nashville needs, another trinket store :-P

As if we needed further confirmation that Lance Smith is a complete tool. Was hosting Top 20 really so onerous that he couldn’t pursue his “acting career” in parallel?

To play devil’s advocate, perhaps Lance Smith’s contract with CMT wasn’t going to be renewed due to higher salary demands. So rather than make them both look bad, the network and it’s ‘face’ decided to amicably part ways.

Truersound, it was posted here recently that Chuck Mead announced BR5-49 was not dead, just dormant for the time being, which is good news indeed. I love the Hank Flamingo album just for the “Little Miss Fire Prevention”, “White Lightnin’” and “Baby It’s You” tracks alone! Maybe Trent should join the resurrected BR5-49 when they rise again! (lol)

PS – Amber Digby will be releasing a new album titled “Another Way To Live” next Tuesday and pre-orders are being taken at the Heart of Texas label’s merchandise branch. It’s too bad the pre-ordered CD’s are being autographed as I never expect Amber to do a show here in L.A….

    Rick’s Random Tidbits:
Guess who scores an article over at the CMT.com news section today? Its none other than Ashley Monroe! I’m glad Ashley’s involvement with Jack White and the Raconteurs brought her some notoriety, but that is a teensy, tiny bit of her musical legacy thus far. Well I’m just glad Ashley is staying on the radar since she never became and established artist before Sony-BMG/Columbia cut her loose.

    PS – Go Ashley!

I’d expect a more of an obscure cover from Miranda than Crazy. A bit lazy

Rick, BR5-49 may not be dead, but Gary Bennett hasn’t been a part of them for the last couple albums. At least since the last one. Would love to see them get back together and release some more classic BR5-49.

Regarding Trent Summar, honestly I would love to see a Trent Summar, Radney Foster project. I don’t know why, but I always thought that would be cool.

I agree… Chuck and Gary should get back together. Br5-49 just aint the same without both of em!
