Stagecoach Music Festival ‘08: Day Two
The weather was still bearable in Indio, as it would thankfully remain for the duration of the festival, and day two was underway. I made sure to get there in time to check out Mr. Johnny up-and-comer himself, Hayes Carll.
Hayes has lots of buzz around him these days and I was happy to see […] -
Stagecoach Music Festival ‘08: Day One
The Stagecoach Musical Festival was a three day event that, on a grand scale, showcased what country music is today. It’s estimated that over the three day period 150,000 people showed up. I arrived on Friday with very little idea of what to expect.
As I walked into the festival, The Randy Rogers Band was playing […] -
Guy Clark, Joe Ely, John Hiatt & Lyle Lovett At The Paramount Theater
Donning a brace on his right foot, Guy Clark limped across stage with the aid of crutches and a thunderous applause on Monday night at the Paramount Theater. Joe Ely, John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett followed close behind and sat in the same order. The gentlemen two seats to my right diligently jotted down notes […]

SXSW 2008: Friday and Saturday Music Wrap-Up
Burleson Heights Unplugged at Ventana del Soul
Friday’s venue hopping kicked off just after lunch at Cafe Ventana, a little cafe/coffee shop tucked into the Ventana del Soul Cultural Center. It’s located away from the bustling activities of SXSW in downtown Austin, and as it turned out, just about everyone in attendance was either an employee […]Continue reading "SXSW 2008: Friday and Saturday Music Wrap-Up"

The Real Thing: Rodney Hayden Sticks To The Classics At Gruene Hall
Rodney Hayden and band at historic Gruene Hall.
A lack of parking in downtown Austin on Thursday afternoon derailed plans to catch a couple of new bands, but opened my schedule to head out to the historic Gruene Hall for a low-key evening away from the frantic atmosphere of SXSW.
The neon glow of beer signs replaced […]Continue reading "The Real Thing: Rodney Hayden Sticks To The Classics At Gruene Hall"

SXSW 2008: Palo Duro Records Showcase Wrap-Up
The first set of the Palo Duro Records Showcase on Wednesday night featured an acoustic lover’s wet dream with a song swap between Trent Summar, Tommy Alverson, Dallas Wayne, and Buzz Cason. All four artists were in a dapper mood, keeping the moderately sized Waterloo Ice House audience in high spirits. If the term “laidback” […]

New Hall of Famers Gather at the Ryman
There was one more ghost than usual in the wings of the Ryman Auditorium on Monday night.
Less than 24 hours after the passing of their brother in the Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry, new Hall of Fame Members Vince Gill, Mel Tillis and Ralph Emery took the stage at the Ryman Auditorium for […] -
Jim’s Big State Wrap-up: Sunday
Concluding our post-event coverage of the 2007 Big State Country Music Festival, here is the second half of my weekend wrap-up.
Sunday:
Colin Gilmore, 11:15.
The son of Texas icon Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Colin played to a small but very enthusiastic crowd at the BMI stage. Admittedly, I only had chance to stick around for about […] -
Jim’s Big State Wrap-up: Saturday
The beer is always free when you can’t drink it.
Lucky enough to be on the VIP list for last weekend’s Big State Festival, I was taunted by the endless supply of free golden-bubbly goodness available in the festival’s private lounges. Let me reiterate: Free. Beer.
But, alas, there were bands to see, interviews to conduct, […] -
And The Bands Played On: Big State Festival Day Two
Kelly Willis and The Wrights were on the brink of starting their 12:30 sets when we arrived at the festival grounds on Sunday. Writing the Saturday wrap-up kept us from showing up earlier to watch Colin Gilmore and Ashley Ray. Our famished stomachs led us straight to the nearest food while we half-heartedly listened to […]

Ashley Gearing - “Out the Window” Gearing makes this mediocre song listenable enough that it earns a very qualified thumbs up.
Taylor Swift - “Should’ve Said No” This song is way too loud. It starts out with that nice banjo lick and then – wham! – I’m diving for the volume control.
Craig Morgan - “Love Remembers” Morgan has here abandoned the sometimes quirky, often twangy nature of his music, instead offering what sits as a startling departure from songs like “Redneck Yacht Club” and “International Harvester.”
Ashton Shepherd - “Sounds So Good” Shepherd lovingly sings her life’s soundtrack in a voice imbued with honest, lived experiences.
Ben Cisneros chats with Star De Azlan about her upcoming record, her influences, and her plans as an artist.
Guy Clark, Joe Ely, John Hiatt & Lyle Lovett at the Paramount Theater, Austin, TX - For two hours they captivated the audience with perfectly-timed stage banter, well-oiled stories, and songs pulled from several decades of their illustrious careers.
Not only is Spirit Ben Cisneros' favorite Willie album, he dubs it Willie's finest accomplishment, claiming "Hank Williams never did anything so excellent; neither did Johnny Cash for that matter." High praise, indeed.
Brody Vercher offers up ten songs inspired the great Willie Nelson.
It should come as no surprise that many fine country songs feature prisoners waiting to die. Here are 10 of the finest.
