“It scares me[...] It feels contrived on so many levels. Unless you’re wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it’s not going to sell. I think that’s why my dad finally got out of it. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie. It makes me nervous, the politics of it all.”

Gary Allan’s Get Off On The Pain hit the Album Charts with strong sales of 65,000–enough to land him at #2 Country/#5 Hot 200. Lady Antebellum dipped to #3 overall (#1 Country) with 105,000 (a 17% week-to-week drop).

Trisha Yearwood talks to Redbook magazine about her home life with Garth.

Lacey Brown was booted off American Idol last night, after Tuesday’s woeful performance of “Ruby Tuesday.” Asked what she’ll do next, she said she “might go the country route.” You have to love the conviction.

Kevin Coyne from Country Universe looks back at Sammy Kershaw’s forgotten 1992 hit “Yard Sale.”

Miranda Lambert talks music and guitars with Gibson.

“The only thing I did differently [with Revolution] was to take a bit more time to do the songwriting. Things were very rushed with the last album, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I was on the road, and was finishing songs in the studio. For this album, I used the same musicians and the same producers, but I used different co-writers, and I took more time. Having some success allowed me to have more control of my schedule.”

Mindy McCready’s new album I’m Still Here “…present[s] a sober-eyed look at a life full of drama,” according to Entertainment Weekly’s Mikael Wood, who gave the disc a “B” grade in his review.

The Academy of Country Music doled out a handful of fan-voted awards yesterday [via That Nashville Sound]:
Top New Vocal Group: Gloriana
Top New Vocal Duo: Joey + Rory

A review of Carrie Underwood’s show at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence:

“[...]it was a high-budget, multi-costume spectacular that visually underlined the progression from modern country into the pop world that Underwood, who plays this Saturday night at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods, began on last year’s “Play On” album. The set list didn’t include “I Ain’t In Checotah Anymore.” That much was obvious.”

“But let’s be honest. In concert, Nelson seems to be going for quantity rather than quality, both in the number of shows he plays and the number of songs he packs into each show. And while that might make for a crowd-pleasing show, it makes for one that runs on good will more than passion, on familiarity more than skill.”

The Bill Ganz Western Band is teaming up with the Tuscon Symphony Orchestra’s Pops! for a three-night series of performances, titled Saddle Up: Music of the West. Opening day is March 26.

Country blogger Matt Bjorke of Roughstock has launched a new series, “Where Are They Now,” with the first edition being a Sammy Kershaw interview that was published yesterday. Coincidentally, The 9513’s Ken Morton, Jr., has also been featuring artists in a “Where Are They Now” series, beginning with his Ryan Shupe story in November of last year.

This year’s CMT Music Awards will air live from Nashville on June 9.

Craig Shelburne has a brief interview with Lee Ann Womack over at CMT:

[Shelburne] I bet Strait Country was a landmark album for you.

[Womack] Mmm-hmm. Oh, yeah. I remember my dad coming in and handing me an album and saying, “This guy sounds just like Tommy Duncan.” [Duncan was the lead vocalist for Bob Wills' Texas Playboys band.] And I knew who Tommy Duncan was because I had listened to all of my dad’s records. That’s a big compliment coming from my dad. He’s real picky and real hard on singers, and he just loved George’s voice. That’s kind of where it started for me.

“Despite having one of the hottest country albums of the moment and several top-charting singles, new Nashville darlings Lady Antebellum suffered one of the cruelest fates[...] Audience indifference.”

Former George Jones/Merle Haggard guitarist Louis Rogers was rescued from his car after four days stuck in a snowbank on a rural Montana backroad. Rogers was found weak, and having already penned a goodbye letter, by Scott and Penny Kalis–an Idaho couple who just happened to be out for a spin in their four-wheel-drive vehicle.

“I guess I had way over 200 people looking for me. I had the FBI looking for me and I’ve never had them looking for me before,” Rogers said.

The Eagles, Dixie Chicks, and Keith Urban are teaming up for a stadium concert tour that kicks off on June 8.

Federal Communications Commission Chair Julius Genachowski recently met with the Country Music Association’s Board of Directors to pitch the agency’s plan for expanding rural broadband coverage. Genachowski showed his respect for country music by following his pitch with the line, “You thought I was going to say something about my wife leaving me, my dog and my truck, didn’t you?”

Striking a more serious chord, Genachowski explained the nuts-and-bolts of the situation:

“However, according to a CMA survey last June, only 50 percent of core country fans have Internet access at home. This is, in part, a deployment issue that our National Broadband Plan intends to tackle through a reform of the Universal Service fund. The Plan is intended to get broadband deployed to unserved households around the nation over the next several years. But part of the problem is also an ‘adoption’ problem: 42 percent of core country musicfans who are offline, say they are not interested in getting online.”

The narrative of Eric Church as a left-of-center, artistry-first country singer/songwriter continues in an interview with Rob Thomas for the Madison (WI) Capital Times, in which the “Love Your Love The Most” singer offers up some advice for anyone who doesn’t follow in his footsteps of making “great” records:

“I have a huge reverence for country music,” [Church] said. “I still have albums, and still play my old albums. I have no problem with somebody coming in and making a great album. If they come in and don’t make a great record and are just trying to extend their 15 minutes of fame, I got a problem with that.”

Check out Craig Shelburne’s interview with Easton Corbin for CMT:

“I got invited to go out to Colorado to write with Mark D. Sanders and Carson Chamberlain. Great writers, very talented folks. ["Leaving A Lonely Town"] was the last song we wrote out there. I was just looking for a song that George Jones would sing. It’s got that feeling. That’s what I wanted to go for. That kind of country music has always moved me. The sadder the song, the better for me.”

Zac Brown Band, Joey + Rory and a three-fold cast of openers played for four hours at The Joint in Las Vegas.

Justin Moore’s guitar was stolen after a show in Michigan last Friday, when a fan walked on stage after the singer’s set and carried the instrument away. Well, with a bit of guilt-tripping courtesy of local radio station WYCD, the culprit eventually fessed up, returned the guitar and issued the following apology:

“Look, man, I (messed) up major, man. It was a drunken mistake. I love your music so much!! God will get me for what I have done. Well, hope to see you in MI soon. But I would like to deeply and sincerely apologize for what I’ve done. Like your wonderful song, “How I Got To Be This Way,” we all make mistakes. … I’m going out and buying 50 of your CDs today. I hope and pray you have a wonderful and long career. …”

Carlo Wolff reviews the new Tammy Wynette biography, Tammy Wynette: Tragic Country Queen, for The Boston Globe:

[Author] McDonough, who plumbed the depths of rocker Neil Young in “Shakey,’’ could have subtitled this dishy book “Tabloid Country Queen.’’ Wynette’s life and death were the stuff of supermarket checkout-line rags, as is, often, McDonough’s treatment of his material.

I never pass up an opportunity to link to pictures of Kellie Pickler, so check out this website if you’re looking for some prom hairstyle inspiration.

Michael McCall has plenty of good things to say about Gary Allan and Get Off On The Pain.

“However, it’s on the ballads where Allan truly flies. “Along the Way” and “She Gets Me” both find a rowdy rambler acknowledging how much his lover sacrifices to keep him. On the musically stripped-down “No Regrets,” Allan attunes his gruff-but-powerful voice to convey a hard-earned strength that’s come in the five years since his wife Angela’s suicide, while admitting, “I still miss her every day.” That’s the kind of searing honesty too often missing from country radio today.”

Spinner’s interview with The Watson Twins from SXSW has this wonderful snippet about my home state. While not specifically country music related, I felt obliged to include it here, as it brought on a strong fit of nostalgia:

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen or experienced while on tour?

CW – Detroit. We were loading into a show and Leigh saw a guy…
LW – (Interrupts) Let me tell the story! So we’re loading into the Majestic, and there was no dressing room. I’m changing clothes in the van, and I look out the window and there’s a homeless person who’s lost his mind who is lighting pieces of paper on fire and throwing them at people. Literally people are walking down the street and he’s throwing these fireballs at them. Then I look in the other direction and here comes a tricycle with a giant dude with dreads carrying a humongous snake wrapped around him. I’m freaking out about that and I turn around and the building next to the venue is on fire.
CW – Welcome to Detroit!
LW – I was like “Armageddon is here and I’m going to go down in Detroit.”

A couple of weeks ago we announced Rodney Hayden’s birthday, one which he shares with Johnny Cash. Can’t get anymore badass than that, right? Well today, Hayden’s New American Voices (The 9513 sponsored tour) counterpart, Drew Kennedy, is celebrating his own birthday, and it’s one that he shares with the inestimable Carrie Underwood. But onward to the cool part. To mark the occasion, he’s recorded a live album, complete with detailed song intros, featuring six favorites and six new, previously unreleased songs. How can you get it? Glad you asked, the physical copy can be had via Lone Star Music, or if you prefer the more economic (free) alternative, it can be downloaded through his website starting sometime today.

After subjecting himself to Danny Gokey’s new album twice, Country California’s C.M. Wilcox has a few things to say:

Gokey’s complete lack of investment in anything resembling country music is readily apparent. He’s a Christian soul singer tapping the conventions of country music from a safe distance, seeing if he might strike gold. The nearest analog is Phil Stacey, who released exactly one ‘country’ (at Disney’s insistence) single and album on Lyric Street before following his heart to a Christian label the next year. I hope Danny Gokey’s country stint will be similarly short, so he can move on and make some music he actually enjoys.

David Cantwell cautions listeners against believing that the American albums represent the complete Johnny Cash, but also denounces the idea that they’re an inaccurate representation:

The potential pitfall, rather, as I’ve seen it, with Cash’s final, Rubin-esque recordings is not their necessarily partial presentation of a great artist but the tendency of some members of his audience, especially many young and new members who don’t know any better (but are wrong just the same), to mistake these concluding pieces for the whole. The American Recordings, even when taken together, explore incompletely Cash’s many sides.

Paste’s Andy Whitman declares the batch of tunes on American VI inferior to those on American V, but confesses that Cash “utterly owns the material.”

FTM: Alright Dean, so you were born in New Braunfels in the big state of Texas. Tell me about your upbringing there.

Dean: Actually, I grew up in Pennsylvania, and went to college in Virginia, which is where I started playing music… so New Braunfels didn’t play a very large role during my formative years. And it’s Drew, not Dean.

Congrats to Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett for their win in the original song category at last night’s Oscars for “The Weary Kind,” and to Jeff Bridges for his win in the actor in a leading role category for his depiction of the washed-up country songwriter Bad Blake in Crazy Heart.

Brad Paisley redefined the term “stage dive” when he took a brutal fall at the end of his concert in Charleston, SC on Saturday night. Coincidentally, the song he had just finished performing was “Alcohol.”

Early in their career, Brooks & Dunn oiled the way for Paisley’s newfound antics with a fake guitar smoke machine fueled by vegetable oil. Unknown to Kix Brooks, once the smoke was released into the air it turned back into it’s oily state, which predictably, didn’t mix well with the rubber on the stage:

“When I busted my ass, I looked over and Ronnie was on his ass, and the guitar player was on his ass, and Ronnie had that look on his face,” Kix recalled. “You know how ice is when it has water on it? It’s not just ice, and you can’t even shuffle your feet. That’s how slick it was, and I saw [Ronnie] try to get up a couple of times, and he was lookin’ at me like, ‘If I ever catch you I will kill you.’”

The the Oklahoma country music festival Country Fever has been canceled this year due to the challenging economy.

Rolling Stone’s 2010 Spring Music Preview includes snippets on the forthcoming album from Willie Nelson, who muses that he loves making records so much he could make one per day, and two new records from Jamey Johnson:

Country outlaw Jamey Johnson will release two albums in 2010: A “white album,” due first, will focus on upbeat material, including the hard-rocking singalong “California Riots” and the title track, which is sung from the perspective of old guitars hanging on a wall. (A more somber “black album” — featuring songs about money troubles — will follow in the fall.) Johnson says the abundance of material reflects a hot streak he’s been on for the past year or so. “It’s an epic journey through honky-tonk-ville,” he says. “If I record all this material, I fully intend to get it out.”

In a way, the raw, loose feel of the band — Hill signaled cues to the ace musicians a couple of times; toward the end, she let loose with a few notes that would make Jennifer Nettles quake in her boots — provided a nice contrast with the high-toned folks watching appreciatively.

Rascal Flatts and Tim McGraw both got snubbed by the ACM Awards, but Chet Flippo thinks Jason Aldean is the biggest omission from the last of nominees and in his latest Nashville Skyline column he argues his case. His conclusion:

So, take awards shows on their own terms, you know. Or ignore them completely. Just don’t cite them as gospel. And when they don’t truly reflect country music, let people know that. Remember, these aren’t so much awards ceremonies as they are — first and foremost — TV shows. And the nominees are, more and more, just the cast.

PopMatters’ Michael Brett really doesn’t like the Zac Brown Band. Really.

Chris Scruggs has a lot of opinions on the music industry and traditions in country music, and in an interview with Nashville Scene’s Adam Gold, he touched on those opinions, contrasted the recording process with an 80-year-old country singer and an artist like Andrew Bird or M. Ward, and recalled meeting his grandfather Earl Scruggs for the first time recently. And he sticks up for Nashville:

People say, “Oh, you know, country music went bad,” and they like to blame it on Nashville. People say, “I can’t stand Nashville for what it’s done to country music.” Nashville was the home of Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn and Kitty Wells. To blame Nashville for the state of country music is like blaming the house for being robbed. People came, cheapened it, and they took away a lot of the magic. That’s not Nashville’s fault, it’s the industry’s fault, and it’s the same industry that’s responsible for a lot of the mediocre rock music you get nowadays too [but people don't go blaming L.A. for that]. Country fans feel so betrayed by Nashville as a city and I’d like to champion Nashville and say that no, Nashville is still a good place. We’ve still got Little Jimmy Dickens and we’ve still got some good things here. It’s the only place in the world where you can see Little Jimmy Dickens at Cracker Barrel randomly on a Saturday morning.

CMT provided a sneak peek at the the upcoming episode of Crossroads with a Zac Brown Band and Jimmy Buffet performance of “Margaritaville.” Other new videos include Eric Church’s intensely performed, but weak-on-concept “Hell On The Heart,” Katie Armiger’s “Kiss Me Now,” and Josh Thompson’s “Way Out Here.”

There’s some spooky stuff going on around John Hiatt’s house, as relayed by Craig Shelburne:

“There’s always been some interesting activity behind our barn,” Hiatt told me during a recent interview. “When our kids were little, they wouldn’t go back there at night, and when they did with their friends, they’d come running into the house scared, saying they’d seen eyes.”

Merle Haggard bemoans the overuse of Auto-Tune:

Well, I don’t allow my music to be tampered with; it goes directly to tape with very little sweetening. I don’t believe in a producer; God is my producer. Anyways, I want it to be real so we can do it properly onstage.

CMT’s Craig Shelburne introduced the new black-and-white, acoustic video for Easton Corbin’s debut hit “A Little More Country Than That.”

When you’re thinking about classic country songwriters, don’t forget Gordon Lightfoot. The Tennessean’s Peter Cooper interviewed the 71-year-old songwriter, who plays the Ryman on Saturday.

Simmy Richman claims that country music has a bad rap in England and in his article for The Independent, titled “Another Country: Why everything you thought you knew about cowboy music is wrong,” he argues that the blame belongs to mainstream Nashville.

“In Nashville, country is presented as something not dynamic and backward-looking – like stamp collecting,” says [BJ] Cole. “The cowboy hats and line-dancing associations have become something to be laughed at.”

“Mainstream Nashville is obsessed with money and commercialism,” says [Hank] Wangford. “Acts get huge by essentially playing AOR [adult-oriented rock], and the machine pretends that any artist making mid-tempo rock music while wearing a cowboy hat is a country act.”

“The main hurdle I have to overcome is getting over the word ‘country’,” says Paul Spencer, curator and organiser of Maverick, the UK’s only festival dedicated to this music. “Like ‘folk’, it’s a word with negative connotations, but this music is an authentic combination of folk, gospel and the blues and, apart from the DJ Bob Harris, it gets no exposure in the UK.”

My Kind of Country: Do you think the current direction of country music could be reversed if the right artist came along, or have the changes been too fundamental?

The Bluegrass Blog highlighted the new book Kentucky’s Bluegrass Music, which features more than 200 images of bluegrass’ most famous and not-so-famous practitioners. Be sure to click through to view pictures of young, mustachioed Ricky Skaggs with Jerry Douglas in the band Boone Creek, an adolescent Chris Thile taking a lesson from Bill Monroe, and Marty Stuart as a youngster performing with Lester Flatt.

The new albums from Josh Thompson and Sarah Buxton made relatively high debuts for new artists with respective sales of 15,000 and 8,000 units.

Behind-the-scenes music industry veteran Jim Halsey released a new book titled Starmaker: How To Make It In The Music Business.

With no available action figure, Country California’s C.M. Wilcox had to make do with a print-out of Jamey Johnson for his photographic adventures with the bearded savior of country music.

Radio station KNBT FM out of New Braunfels, Texas is hosting a contest for a Crazy Heart guitar, which means it’s the guitar used in the film. Actually, I made that last part up, but the guitar is autographed by Jeff Bridges, T Bone Burnett, and Ryan Bingham.
