Carrie Underwood will Likely be the Next Invited to Join Grand Ole Opry
It’s a big couple of weeks for the Grand Ole Opry, with an 82nd Birthday celebration on October 20th and Josh Turner’s induction ceremony on October 27th. Peruse the lineup for the Opry’s birthday bash and you’ll notice Carrie Underwood, headlining the show’s televised portion among a lineup of Opry veterans and former superstars. It’s Carrie’s second Opry appearance in as many weeks, and the frequency of her appearances seem to have accelerated as her star has risen. That’s surprising given the substantial opportunity cost that young stars encounter when they elect to play the Opry instead of headlining at an arena.
Furthermore, Carrie’s Opry performances have been exceedingly memorable. Her stunning 2006 rendition of “Stand by Your Man” is among the most memorable Opry performances of the century and is featured on Opry radio commercials and in the before-show video feature. Her most recent appearance on October 8th featured an inspired performance of “How Great Thou Art” that saw Carrie — and some in the audience — wiping away tears at the end:
Carrie Underwood is the genre’s most talented new female vocalist in over a decade and her list of accomplishments, recorded at a historically dizzying pace, is already more than sufficient to merit Opry membership. I see no reason why she shouldn’t join the Opry and only a few reasons why she might not.
I can’t prove it, but I can envision American Idol prejudice among some members of Opry management. That’s a bit hypocritical given the not-insignificant role that shows like Hee Haw have played in shaping the Opry’s membership, and it’s not as if the country stars to emerge from American Idol haven’t been worthy (with the possible exception of newcomer Bucky Covington). At this point, Underwood has accomplished enough in her own right that American Idol is really only of historical relevance to her career. Arguing that she’s a creation of the popularity of American Idol is akin to arguing that Dolly Parton is a creation of The Porter Wagoner Show.
Carrie also has the disadvantage — at least from the perspective of Opry membership — of being the most extensively managed of the contemporary Opry candidates. It’s fair to assume that Carrie’s infrastructure is not equinanimous about the value of her membership in an eighty-two year old radio program that’s still rather bucolic in its charm. However, her continued appearances on the Opry despite its likely negligible contribution to her career success suggests that whoever’s making the decision in the Carrie camp is not opposed to the institution.
Finally, Carnival Ride, Underwood’s sophomore album, reveals significant artistic immaturity that might give pause to some in the Opry management. Nonetheless, none can dispute her talent and potential and her Opry performances always seem to highlight her strengths.
On balance, I encourage and expect Carrie’s invitation to join the Opry. The Opry may go on a brief membership hiatus following Josh Turner’s induction, but I’ll wager that Carrie becomes the Opry’s first female inductee since Terri Clark joined in June 2004.

I’m skeptical. No way she’d limit her touring schedule like that at this point.
October 19, 2007 at 11:37 pm Permalink
Because there’s no minimum appearance requirement, there’s no need to limit touring. She wouldn’t have to appear any more than she appears already and could appear less. I haven’t actually counted, but I’d guess that she already appears more often than superstar Opry members like Brad Paisley and Martina McBride.

After giving her newest album a brief listen (it sounds more country) and seeing her comments in EW about being a country singer and not remixing songs for pop radio, I was thinking that she could be positioning herself for Opry induction. Then I read this article and it seems to validate my thoughts. Even so, I’m still a bit skeptical. I suppose I’ll have to take a wait and see approach with Carnival Ride.

Why not Carrie Underwood - the Opry needs to keep refreshing itself. Some of the old guard are in poor health and not available to perform as often - why wait until they die off to find replacements?

RE: “I see no reason why she shouldn’t join the Opry and only a few reasons why she might not.”
I see one: She’s a pop princess. She offers nothing to the production of her music other than her vocals. I bet she couldn’t write a song to save her life. I can picture the four or so songs on “Carnival Ride” that she co-wrote being written with three others and Carrie’s name being slapped on it. Has anyone seen this girl pick up a guitar?
If Underwood is inducted, it will show just how low the standards of the Opry have become. I hope her over-exposure goes haywire and she finds herself working the ticket window at a Miranda Lambert concert.
October 20, 2007 at 7:47 am Permalink
DAve S– she just wrote 4 songs that made her new album, so you may wish to get the facts straight before you bash. She is not a pop princess- she was raised on the farm and is more country then you likely are. Why are people so mean to her–?? Are some of the haters really that jealous and catty? Leanne Rimes got her start on star search too. Miranda got her start on nashville star. What is it about carrie that breeds such jealousy and hate?
Carris is AMAZING, sweet, super talented, and would do the opry an honor by joining. Her new album is amazing, so I disagree with the writer of this article on his negative comment about her album. It is more country then her debut album, and is the best album to come from a female in country music since shania’s Come on Over. She deserves a place in the opry, and does not deserve the hate and bashing she gets by ignorant people who know nothing about her. Thank you.
October 20, 2007 at 7:48 am Permalink
By the way DAveS– she does play guitar at EVERY concert. She also plays electric guitar, and acoustic guitar, at every concert. If you don’t believe me go on youtube and check out the hundredes of videos of her playing guitar. She also plays piano- do you?
October 20, 2007 at 7:53 am Permalink
Carrie PLAYS GUITAR and PIANO- dufus! (this is to Dave S). She is a wonderful vocalist and a very talented musician. She is also proving to be a very talented song writer. So take your hate and channel it to something productive, like bashing britney spears, who deserves it. What is wrong with some of you people? You know nothing about Carrie- yet you HATE her so much and so unfairly! What on earth did she ever do to you? And if it wasn’t for her, alot of people would’nt like country music today. She exposed alot of us in big cities to country music from american idol- and now we love it, buy albums of other country artists like kenny, tim, martina, etc- all due to carrie exposing the genre to us. So how is that a bad thing? People like you are what turns people off of country music because you are so close minded and stubborn- and hateful. Poor Carrie– it sure is lonely at the top. Look at all the jealous haters she has…(sigh) That’s ok- the cream always rises to the top.
October 20, 2007 at 7:56 am Permalink
Carrie totally deserves to be in the opry! She is amazing, talented, plays both guitar and piano, is now writing some of her own songs, and is a very strong christian. How can you call her a pop princess- dave s, when she grew up on a farm in podunk OKlahoma? How is that not country? And who made you the judge of what is country, and what is not? Stop your hating and accept that fact that Carrie can sing amazing, and deserves everything she is getting- except your hate! :)

Matt would you explain your reason for indicating this conclusion about the album . “Finally, Carnival Ride, Underwood’s sophomore album, reveals significant artistic immaturity”
October 20, 2007 at 8:01 am Permalink
Come on Dave, that’s a little much, isn’t it? As far as I’m aware, George Jones didn’t write songs or lend much of a hand to the production process. It took them months to get the spoken part of “He Stopped Loving Her Today” recorded. George Strait doesn’t write, either. So I don’t know how you can knock Carrie Underwood for not being much of a writer, especially at this stage in her career.

What gets me about bashers is they are narrow minded in thinking everyone else should believe they have the expertise in what Country Music is.
October 20, 2007 at 8:34 am Permalink
I think it’s great. Carrie has an amazing talent. Her music infuses the best of contemporary country with a popular flair, which country stars have been doing… since day one. She’s a little mainstream for my frequent listening tastes, but it’s undeniable that she’s great for country music. She’s a solid role model too. I think most of the legends of the Op’ry will be/would be proud to have her.
October 20, 2007 at 9:22 am Permalink
I agree with much of what you say Onry&Mean, except the only difference her “being a little mainstream for my listening tastes.” That’s why I listen to Country music. I’m one of the ones that never liked it when my dad would turn the radio on to a country station. But I have totally changed my way of viewing Country music now and this is due mostly to Ms. Underwood…it’s no longer “my daddy’s Country”. Because of Carrie, I find myself keeping the radio in the car tuned to a Country station. I’ve bought albums by Rascal Flatts, Reba, Garth, Sugarland, LeAnn, and a few others. (Some might argue that some of those are too mainstream as well). But one can’t argue the fact that Carrie is great for Country music as you mentioned. And she does have an amazing talent.
I do have a question for you though, Matt. Why do you feel that CR shows “artistic immaturity”? Could you expand on that a bit…is it the lyrics or the sound or what? I’m just curious as I’ve listened to the entire recording and I feel that she has matured so much with CR from Some Hearts. Her vocals just blow me away and I think she’s grown so much as an artist. Thanks!
October 20, 2007 at 10:47 am Permalink
Carrie’s the one that’s responsible for me being into Country music. I have to admit before she came along, I really never gave it much of a chance. Once she came on Americal Idol, I gave artists that she enjoyed such as Rascal Flatts & Keith Urban a listen and REALLY liked what I heard. It wasn’t long before I had the entire catalog of both!
This year I’ve purchased CD’s from Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Faith Hill, Sara Evans, Sugarland, Taylor Swift & Kellie Pickler among others. Would I have even purchased a single one of these CD’s two or three years ago? Definitely not! Additionally, I’ve gone to ten different Country concerts this year. I had never gone to a Country concert in my life until Carrie began touring last year… Carrie has helped make Country “cool.” And for that alone, she deserves to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry.

October 20, 2007 at 2:25 pm Permalink
Carrie is the best thing to happen to country music in a long time. She is so so talented, she and martina have the best voices of the ladies right now. It is like hearing an angel sing. I am so tired of the bashers saying she is not country- when she grew up on a farm. How is that not country, people? LOL She deserves to be in the opry, as she and Josh Turner are what country music is all about. She is sweet, talented, real, and a good role model for kids. And by the way- she does play guitar, piano, and write her own songs now, for the new album. She also graduated with honors from college and is a good christian. To the original poster of this article- good job! I applaud you for saying what we all think about Carrie- she is wonderful! But I disagree with you about her album– it is WAY better then the first album, as she has grown as an artist and a person- and this album shows that. Her vocals are also better. So I think you should listen again- it is the best country album to come out in a long long time. (not talking about traditional stuff or allison krauss stuff, comparing only to other contemporary country artists like faith or shania, etc).

Will someone please tell me what is country about donating money to PETA?
October 20, 2007 at 2:27 pm Permalink
Agree completely that Carrie should be an opry member- she is a refreshing asset to country music- and people need to stop their jealous hate already. Enough is enough! they did this to shania too when she was bigger then they wanted her to be…they tried to cut her down out of jealousy. But I disagree too about the new album– I give it 5 stars out of 5, and say it shows maturity and growth as an artist. Listen to it again, and with an open mind…don’t be so snarky. You are better then that, as your article portrays. :)
October 20, 2007 at 3:07 pm Permalink
Dave S– she never gave money to PETA. They voted for her for some silly sexy vegetarian contest- she never entered even! she does not donate to them. And even if she did, that doesn’t make her less country then you or I. She is sweet, christian, and has been singing since age 3 in church. She was raised on a FARM! She used to be a member of the FFA even! So come on– lighten up! She is from oklahoma, not LA!
October 20, 2007 at 3:10 pm Permalink
Carnival Ride, Carrie’s new album- is amazing! IT shows great promise and growth from the debut album. IT is more country and more authentic.. I especially love Flat on the Floor and Just a Dream. Wonderful song about a soldier dying, and his fiance unable to accept it. This album is going to skyrocket in sales and accolades. So Matt— please give it a fair review…sounds like you have formed a negative opinion of it, and you should really listen to it again. IT is amazing! I love it so much!

Carrie never gave money to PETA– she was voted prettiest vegetarian or something. who cares. Seriously. She is a nice person and never imposes her views on others. Plus, her Dad raised cattle on a farm, so she supports farming and was a member of the FFA. This is documented. She performed a concert for the FFA last year. I love her new album and hope you all give it a listen- it is much more country then the last one.

Carrie is a manufactured Barbie Doll product from the Sony BMG Factory. She has very little personality, and it shows in her interviews where she comes off as a haughty snob.
I actually like Kellie Pickler, who came from the same show as Underwood, so don’t argue that I have a vendetta for such contestants. Pickler actually shows some personality on and off stage, and she can deliver a decent vocal performance without screeching and yelling… unlike Underwood.
I’ll never forget her interview with CMT’s Katie Cook after the 2006 CMA fiasco, where Underwood responded to critics who said she hadn’t paid her dues by saying; “American Idol is a whole different kind of due-paying.”
Don’t make me laugh, Carrie. She had a record contract handed to her on a silver platter and millions of dollars in promotion to soon follow… at the expense of artists like Lambert and Pickler. Maybe if Sony BMG wasn’t so busy promoting its Barbie Doll, they’d have enough resourses to get the real talented ladies a Top 10 hit or two.

OK, so I am a hater as well, because I have to agree with Dave S, because I cannot stand Carrie Underwood. Every time one of her songs comes on the radio I turn the station, and I agree that her sucess is at the expense of a lot of other artists because major labels are putting way too much money too her and not putting money into other talented artists. I love how people on this put that they now listen country, but the people that they list that they listen to, are all major acts and I bet they have never heard of Ashely Monroe, Shelley Fairchild, or Sarah Buxton or any of the other minor artists that I love that are having a heck of a time getting an album out because of artists like her.
Every time I hear about her giving an interview, I hear what a snob she was.
No matter what anyone says I will not change my opinion of her. I too am a fan of Kellie Pickler and even Bucky Covington, and a few other AI contestants, so you cannot say it is because she was on AI.

When Carrie underwood sells six million records, that is a very, very, very good thing for ALL country artists.
October 20, 2007 at 7:45 pm Permalink
How is that?
October 20, 2007 at 8:28 pm Permalink
Simply, when labels are healthy and thriving they can take more chances and sign more artists (not to mention that they have more resources to allocate to those that they do sign).
On a larger scale, when the broader country format performs well, it expands as a whole; if Carrie Underwood brings new fans in to the fold, even if they never, ever buy a record from an artist who you would define as “real” country, those consumers are contributing to the bigger picture.
See, it’s easy to demonize labels, but they exist for the same purpose as any other buisness–to maximize profit. And the (unfortunate) truth is that artists like Carrie have a broader appeal (more profit potential) than the traditional artists.
But labels aren’t evil or stupid–they know that there’s a market for the traditional, for the fringe, for the niche, and they want to tap into that.
But it’s not always as simple as what they want, especially when the entire buisness model is in jeopardy.
Also, we need to realize that when Carrie sells six million units, we’re not just talking about her and her label who are reaping the benefits; we’re talking about songwriters, publishers, producers, agents, publicists, marketing firms, distributors, all the behind-the-scenes people who make the wheel turn.

i really would like to know why every positive or even semi positive post about carrie underwood brings out severely negative and not even on the topic responses….i get that being a bigger star makes you a bigger target…but this is just ridiculous
judge the music…if you don’t like it, thats fine, don’t buy it…don’t find 750 excuses why being a vegetarian or being gorgeous makes her unlikeable
October 20, 2007 at 11:59 pm Permalink
Dave S (and others),
Jim’s absolutely right. The whole genre (and I’d argue the whole music business) is better off when an artist like Carrie comes along. They help spur interest in other artits. I remember there was a time when I bought stuff from a label because my favorite artist (or 2) were on the same label or used the same producer. It helped me to buy some ‘unknown’ artists. As you can see from other posts here, Carrie’s helped to bring in fans of the genre. Just because they don’t buy what YOU consider country (or real) doesn’t mean they aren’t helping to contribute to the genre so that your favorite ‘troublesome’ Sony BMG artists can get records out. I’d argue that Carrie has NOTHING to do with any SBMG artist not getting a fair shake but with Radio/the label themself having trouble with what they have to promote (for whatever reason).

To the haters– you guys are out to lunch! Carrie is NOT a snob at all! I like bucky- but kellie pickler is a total flake and has no vocal talent- though she is MILES ahead of the over-rated taylor swift. EEK- talk about someone who can’t sing. Carrie sings circles around all of the other newbies– and is equal to martina. She never screeches- she sings like an angel- and right now, the only thing that stinks- is Dave S and Lanibug! You guys hate her so much, you seriously need counseling! What did she ever do to you? She is super talented and SUPER nice– and I have met her many times– and she treats everyone with respect. As for paying dues- carrie did pay dues LONG before idol…she sang in church, talent shows, softball games, county fairs etc- trying to get a record deal. She almost got signed at age 14 by capitol records– but it fell through. So she PAID DUES for 10 years almost, before trying out for idol. What have you done- but hate????!!! And country music fans are supposed to be nice, good christian people! What a joke! You should all be ashamed! I am so angry reading your hate- I should not let you get tome.

The only snob, in country music, is taylor swift, who acts 17 going on 30, and can’t hold a candle to carrie in anyway, shape or form. She is very arrogant and fake. She isn’t even from the south- she is from PA. Carrie is a southern country girl raised on a farm. She is sweet, modest, and humble, shy. She is never snobby at interviews….you take her shyness for snobbery- then fine do so– but your hate only makes you look pathetic. You can tell carrie has an album coming out- because the vulchers smell blood and are circling their prey- ready to pounce. You would do anything to bring carrie down. but it won’t work- because she is good, and you know it, or you wouldn’t hate her so much, out of jealousy and resentment–that she gets more attention then your favorites. Get used to it haters- she is going to be here for a long long time.
October 21, 2007 at 12:36 am Permalink
And I thought country music people were supposed to be the good guys? !! maybe I should go back to listening to rap, where there is less hate. I turned to country due to carrie, and fell in love with the genre as a whole- until I started having to deal with all these carrie haters like you all, who can’t accept her for some unknown reason. You did the same thing to shania too. Anytime someone does well– you attack. Get a new hobby!
Leave carrie alone! She ROCKS!

Not only do I have a problem with Carrie Underwood herself, but also her fans. Look at the posts made by “Jason” and “Ashley.” While they crucify me and others for disliking Carrie by saying how horrible people we are for spreading hate, etc., they run their mouths about other female artists and how much they think they stink. Is there a double standard here?
I have come across this phenomenon multiple times on country music boards all over the internet. I even had one Carrie fan say that it’s so bad on her fan club forum that he/she refuses to post there because the bashing of other artists is so out of control.
The fact of that matter is that Carrie fans think that Carrie should be the one and only female allowed to be played on the radio. I have never come across a group of fans so threatened by and jealous of a fellow female artist doing well.
Also, Carrie fans are immature tennie boppers who have little music appeciation and thus fell in love with the pop princess on American Idol. As soon as the next big thing comes along, they shall flock to it and leave Underwood in the dust.

Hey matt- great article, I really hope she gets into the opry! Not sure what is up with these bashers here– but my gut instinct is that they are trying to bring Carrie down in anyway possible. I read your review though and that greatly dissapoints me. Not sure what you were expecting– we all had high expectations on album 2, but Carrie came through with flying colors and surpassed all my personal expectations. I think people need to give her a break: you can pick any song apart lyrically and call the words clique or cheesy– but Carrie is not trying to be some elitist poet here. She is a nice person, and she actually believes in what she sings about. I think people are way too cynical and ready to pounce on her like she is prey, as someone above said. All the energy wasted bashing her could be used by these people to support their favorite artists instead….And they wonder why carrie wins everything- because they are too busy hating on her to buy their own artists’ cds or to support them in other ways…lol I love her new cd– maybe I am not a “snarky” critic but I have a brain, and I have taste, and I know what I like. I love her voice, I love how she sings on Carnival Ride– she improved greatly from her first album…so I disagree that she is going to see a let down. She got a wonderful 4 star review out of 5 stars on All Music guide– a very important reviewer which appears on itunes, etc. I expect many more great reviews to follow. Either way- it won’t affect the 10 copies I plan to buy tuesday. So have a nice day all of you– and thank you Matt for a wonderful article..wish your review was nicer, but this article is great.

No matter what anyone says, I still don’t like her, and I have to agree with Brody, Matt and Dave. Carrie fans are just afraid. And many of the women artists that I like have been around a heck of a lot longer than Carrie and will be around a heck of a lot longer than Carrie. So you can hate me all you want, I just dont care. I agree with the statement that Carrie fans believe that she should be the only female artist played on country radio. I agree with the statements that she over does her music. I just plain don’t like her. That is how I feel and we are all allowed to have our own opinions, that is the reason that this is american and this is country music.
Number two - why the heck do you need 10 copies of an album….is this just to jack up her album numbers…talk about being childish….

First: I am a HUGE Carrie fan, and love the new CD (moreso than the first).
Second: The beauty of music: Music is subjective, and may of the HATERS or HATER-BASHERS are doing one thing and one thing only. STIRRING THE CONTROVERSARY POT, which in turn will create interest, and ultimately sell more records for our Miss Carrie, so a BIG THANKS are in order.
If you like or love her music, do so.
If you don’t, there aremany other great artists out there who would appreciate support as well (Shelly Fairchild is pretty outstanding…good call!)
I love what I love, and Carrie has my support…now excuse me while I step off my soap box which seems to have been coated with abusive (both sides) clutter…

OK Taylor is WAY WAY WAY WAY Better than Carrie. Carrie got fame from Simon because she was cute and looked shy and innocent. She’s a jerk. She shuns away fans 24/7. Like at the CMT nominations awards you saw her put visine in her eyes to make her look like she was crying in joy. FAKER!! She also says shes vegetarian because she loves animals but wears alligator boots and animal fur. OK animal lover? No. And also about the shunnign fans, also at the CMT nominations a fan asked her for an autograph. She looked up and said What?! in a very rude tine. the fan said sorry and R U busy? She goes you think?! taylor doesnt shun fans WAY betterr than her

I agree with Dave and the other “haters”: Carrie Underwood is nothing more than a flavour of the month (Julie Roberts, anyone? Wretched Wilson?) whose “sweet” and “girl next door” facade will only decay to reveal the true rot underneath. Now, myself, I HATE COUNTRY and it’s pompous bloated attitude (mostly from country fans) but yet I love SHeDAISY. So why should I even give a dead rat’s arse if I listen to Carrie or not? I will explain. She only got famous because of a stupid television karaoke show and she thinks that’s “paying her dues”. I don’t a flippin’ toss if she tried to get a record deal at 14 or sang at some stupid church function. She got success and fame handed to her on a silver platter and now she thinks that gives her an excuse to act like an arsehole all the while pulling the “shy” card. Sorry, Carrie, but you do not deserve your success. Give it to someone who isn’t going to make little girls cry simply by asking for an autograph. That’s why I hate Wretched Wilson, but that’s another story for another day.

first of all let me say this.YOU ALL SOUND INCREDIBLY RIDDICULOUS,especially ashley (october 21) what the heck does being from pa have to do with being a great country singer? there are plenty of awesome country singers out there who arent from the south who have been around alot longer than carrie “miss Imfrom the south and grew up on a farm underwood” TAYLOR SWIFTS’ parents knew she had talent from a very small age and left PA for there daughter so she could pursue her dream for country music. She wasnt handed a ticket to American Idol and if the American Idol fans who voted for her knew then what we all know now about Miss “I dont wanna sign your autograph” i highly doubt she’d be where she is today. (I’M SO GLAD I’M A KENNY CHESNEY FAN) so miss ashley get off us pennsylvania girls and stop hating on taylor cuz she’s from pa and just admit that taylor is a great country singer no matter where she is from
