Carrie Underwood to Sing at Super Bowl; Strait Reschedules; Top 20 Love Songs

- George Strait rescheduled this weekend’s shows due to inclement weather.
- Shirley Collie Nelson, a former wife of Willie Nelson, passed away at the age of 78. She charted three singles on the Billboard country chart in the early ’60s: “Dime a Dozen,” “Why Baby Why” (with Warren Smith), and “Willingly” (with Willie Nelson). Coincidentally, the duet with Willie was his first appearance on the charts.

- Willie Nelson likens his new album to Stardust:
“It really sounds like I’m talking about Stardust, because when I was promoting that album [in 1978] I was saying the same thing,” Willie notes. “There are a lot of young people out there who have never heard these songs, and a lot of the older folks like myself haven’t heard them in a long time. It’s the same idea — great old standards that people are either going to recognize or love for the first time.”

Stunned to see GAC included “I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes” by Dierks Bentley and “I Run to You” by Lady Antebellum on the list. I love both songs, but seriously 20 best of all time? I don’t think so.

Dierks song gags me! His vocals are terrible on this song as well! It would not be on my list of greatest love songs and you left off Keith Urban who sings the most beautiful love songs ever.

Savannah Welch is Kevin’s kid? That definitely puts them on my “artist to watch” list. Kevin Welch was the guy that helped me first realize there was a whole alt-country/Americana movement out there (before there was even a name for it). It’s simultaneously cool and distressing to know he has kids old enough to follow in his footsteps.

In order to overcome a case of the Odumbo BullSh*t Overload Blues I headed to the Mint club last night to catch Collin Gilmore (who?), Grant Langston, and Wayne The Train Hancock. That’s the best $ 15 three hour honky tonk therapy I’ve ever experienced! (lol) I really enjoyed when Wayne and the band finished their set list and began doing covers of songs like “Blue Suede Shoes”, Johnny Horton’s “North To Alaska”, and the best live version of “Cow Cow Boogie” I’ve ever heard. The place was packed with folks in their 20’s and 30’s and I just want to know how they know about Wayne? Maybe a local NPR station plays his music, but I wouldn’t know…

I would definitely have trouble narrowing it down to twenty, but here are some that I would probably include on my personal “Best Country Love Songs” list inspired by GAC’s:
• Alan Jackson, “Remember When”
• Brad Paisley, “We Danced”
• Clint Black & Lisa Hartman Black, “When I Said I Do”
• Clint Black, “Like the Rain”
• George Strait, “If You Can Do Anything Else”
• John Michael Montgomery, “I Can Love You Like That”
• John Michael Montgomery, “I Swear”
• Keith Whitley, “When You Say Nothing At All”
• Randy Travis, “Forever And Ever, Amen”
• Tracy Byrd, “Keeper Of The Stars”
• Tim McGraw, “Just to See You Smile”
• Toby Keith, “Me Too”
• Brooks & Dunn, “Brand New Man”
• Vince Gill, “I Still Believe in You”
These are all really recent songs, but they’re some of the good ones GAC made me think of.
Hmmm…I need more female artists.

Carrie Underwood singing at the Super Bowl is such an honor. She is going to do a wonderful job. Since so many watch the Super Bowl, it’s going to be great for many people to hear her spectacular voice.

“Collin Gilmore (who?)”
That would be Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s kid, and a very talented singer/songwriter in his own right. Of course, Gilmore is part of The Flatlanders, which means that you’ll hate Jimmie Dale for being an Obamavoter and his offspring just on general principles.

Sam G. said “Of course, Gilmore is part of The Flatlanders, which means that you’ll hate Jimmie Dale for being an Obamavoter and his offspring just on general principles.” Your training is progressing nicely Grasshopper! True wisdom is coming within your grasp…(lol)

Dan: The only thing that worries me is Carrie can flat out sing that song live like she did at the World Series. But the NFL has this contract that makes artists tape their performance ahead of time, then mouthed it during the game. All because of Garth Brooks demanding his commercial to be shown and NFL said no. So he walked before the National Anthem. I hope they don’t do this to Carrie. Surely they know she is a power singer for this song plus…she is one girl who won’t walk off.

Did Allison Moorer explain HOW those albums inspired her to sound country?
January 30, 2010 at 1:12 pm Permalink
“All because of Garth Brooks demanding his commercial to be shown and NFL said no. So he walked before the National Anthem”
No, they agreed to play his video for We Shall Be Free at halftime and then reneged the day of the telecast. He said ‘no video, no Anthem’. They backtracked and kept the original agreement and he performed the Anthem.
January 30, 2010 at 2:01 pm Permalink
BLL: Ok…thanks for correcting me. Then is the NFL keeping the contract because of the threat? I sure hope they don’t make Carrie lipsync to it.

The weather in Nashville is affecting tonight’s Opry in a good way! Connie Smith couldn’t make it so Cherryholmes got to perform 3 songs like on a Tuesday night Opry. Stonewall Jackson and Ray Pillow also didn’t make it, so Gail Davies and her son Chris Scruggs sang a duet on the Webb Pierce song “If You Were Me”! Gail got to plug her excellent “Caught In The Webb” tribute album and Eddie Stubbs wondered how long it had been since that great old song had been performed on the Opry stage? Its the unexpected “Opry Moments” like this that keep me listening week after week! (Well, that and the fact its free! lol)
Colt Ford is Redneck Yahoo Country at its loose and rowdy best (if there is such a thing?). Colt has a co-singer in the band who really has a nice voice but Colt tends to hog the mic because its his band. That’s too bad…
How can Dale Watson be in Nashville to do the E.T. Record Shop Midnite Jamboree tonight and not get scheduled on the OPRY while Colt Ford can? This is a country music travesty I tell you! (lol)

Carrie did a fantastic job at the Super Bowl today. It was live and her power vocals shined through. Way to go!
February 7, 2010 at 6:42 pm Permalink
She’s done better but I’ll give her props for not lip-synching and doing it a cappella.
EW’s Michael Slezak seems to have liked it:

I felt so sorry for Carrie. We all know she can sing, but the neves definatly got to her. She is such an incredible talent though, love her.
February 7, 2010 at 8:32 pm Permalink
The only note that missed was the last note and you could tell she couldn’t find it for she went back and forth finally finding it at the end. But it’s the first time in a long time for some one to sing it without instrumentation and “live”. So proud of you Carrie! It reminded me of my nerves in 1st grade at the public spelling bee. Spell Animals Vicki. With quivering voice A N I M A L (awe made it) Z. Animals. (Buzzer) Huh? Mom told me later that I ended with Z instead of S. I thought the same for Carrie..she hit all the most important notes..and maybe was feeling relieved..then hit that last note.

I am not a Underwood fan, but she should get a pass here. Many a better singer then her have had trouble with the national anthem.

Reviews were good:
USA Today:
“Moments later, with the color guard closely behind her on a makeshift stage at midfield, Underwood belted out a stunning rendition of the national anthem. Seconds after finishing the finalnote, Underwood looked toward the sky with a big smile as four F-15s flew over the stadium before peeling away on full afterburner, rattling the seats at Sun Life Stadium.
MTV;
Carrie Underwood excels no matter what the context. Fresh off her headline-grabbing contribution to the Michael Jackson tribute at this year’s Grammy Awards (where she adroitly weaved her way through Jackson’s “Earth Song”), Underwood took the microphone in front of a sold-out Sun Life Stadium in Miami to deliver a killer rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the kickoff to Super Bowl XLIV.
EW:
You want your National Anthem sung right? You callan American Idol alum. At least that seems to be the consistent (and, to be honest, correct) message brought to you by the good folks of the NFL. Last year’s Super Bowl found Jennifer Hudson singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” while this year’s NFC and AFC conference championship games brought Kris Allen and Jordin Sparks to the mic to get in touch with their inner patriots (national, not New England). And for tonight’s all-eyes-are-locked-on-it game, we got Idol’s season 4 champ and ubiquitous country queen Carrie Underwood offering her own (not-surprisingly) exquisite twist on the National Anthem.
Daily Contributor:
Carrie Underwood’s version of the “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the pregame show prior to Super Bowl 2010 is one of the best renditions I’ve heard at a sporting event.
Dressed in a stunning white pantsuit and top, the 26-year-old American Idol Season 4 winner stepped up to the microphone without a hint of anxiety and delivered the goods under pressure. However, Carrie admitted that she was having the jitters singing in the biggest stage in American sports

The anthem is one of the hardest songs for any singer to sing.
February 8, 2010 at 5:56 am Permalink
I heard that the planes started rumbling on the field right before that last note and she couldn’t hear herself.
February 8, 2010 at 8:19 am Permalink
I was pleasantly surprised at how well she did. I’m probably the world’s harshest critic when it comes to the National Anthem. I’ll even give a pass on that last note, but not on the SCREECHING of the word “free” …. that was just downright ear-shattering.
And speaking of the National Anthem … Zac Brown Band did a GREAT job at Daytona Saturday night.
