Carrie Underwood Reportedly Engaged; Taylor Swift to Play Supergirl; New Ashton Shepherd Album in the Works
- Rumors swirled on Sunday about the possible engagement of Carrie Underwood and hockey player Mike Fisher. This morning, the Toronto Sun is citing a source who has supposedly confirmed the engagement.
“The rumours began spreading after a friend of Underwood’s family congratulated the former American Idol and the Senators centre on their upcoming marriage on his Twitter page last night. This morning, a source close to the couple confirmed to the Ottawa Sun that Fisher popped the question and Underwood has accepted the proposal.”
- LeAnn Rimes‘ husband Deane Shermet has filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The breakup comes after eight years of marriage.
- A 7-inch piece of veneer from Bill Monroe’s 1923 F-5 Lloyd Loar mandolin recently sold for $37,500, reports the Louisville Courier-Journal.
“People at Christie’s were shocked at the price,” [Gabrielle Gray, executive director of the International Bluegrass Music Museum] said last week. “But it’s folklore. It’s one of a kind. It came from the most famous mandolin in the world. It’s at the heart and soul of bluegrass music. It could have sold for $100,000.”
- A survey of Associated Press members has voted Taylor Swift 2009’s Entertainer of the Year.
“She defines crossover appeal and would seem to be a strong business model in a declining music business,” Widner said. “And to her fans, she’s the real deal. On MySpace and in her songs, she wrote what she felt and sang about her experiences.” — Ellis Widner, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
- Swift is rumored to be in talks to play the lead role in a film adaption of the comic book Supergirl. The first issue of Supergirl was published in 1959, and Helen Slater played the lead in a 1984 film version.
- Here’s a link to one of 2009’s obligatory “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” features, courtesy of the Dallas News.
- Neko Case, Rosanne Cash and Ryan Bingham appear on Jeff Spevack’s 2009 all-genre Top 10 list.
- Ashton Shepherd recently tweeted that album number two is underway.
- Lt. Dan Northup and Sgt. Lori Lavorato are two Des Moines (IA) police officers who were picked to star in the video for Jamey Johnson’s upcoming video for “High Cost of Living.” The video is said to be nearly 7 minutes long.

On the “piece of veneer” from Monroe’s mandolin, it helps to know the story; going by one detail in the C-J story, this is the headstock veneer from which Monroe gouged off the “Gibson” logo back in the early 50s, after he was dissatisfied with a repair/refurbishing job. He continued to play the mandolin in that condition until the early 80s, when a rapprochement with the company resulted in the replacement of the headstock. So in that respect it’s really a part of history on its own, not just as a random part of an historic mandolin.

Good to hear that Ashton Shepherd will be recording a new album. The second step of actually convincing the label to release it to the public is another matter entirely. I predict a “digital download” only retail version of this album if it gets released at all.
I’m with Kelly regarding questioning the late timing of the Jamey Johnson video, although the radio single release didn’t do much on the charts. And I hope the added length is used to make it more of a short subject film than just showing the musicians endlessly noodling at the close of the song…
I feel a poem coming on! (Must be the medications and my habit of listening to A Prairie Home Companion…)
T’was the week before Christmas,
And in the Senate and House,
Demoncrap turds were so busy,
Like bedbugs or a louse!
Their hands were all out,
backroom deals were fair,
In hopes that Odumbocare,
Soon would be theirs!
They shoved Odumbocare’s plan,
Down Uncle Sam’s throat,
Hoping free market healthcare,
soon would be choked!
The Constitution was shredded,
As they counted their votes,
And praised Obamavoters,
Those “useful idiot” mopes!
And triumph evil did,
As they shouted with glee,
F’ You America!,
So much for being free….
In the spirit of Christmas I want to wish all of you Obamavoters, who put these leftist dirtbags in charge of destroying this once great country, a stocking full of Santa’s freshest reindeer droppings! That’s just freakin’ awesome….

Taylor Swift’s musical style may not exactly be my cup of tea, and she may not have the most distinctive vocals either, but she well-deserved the Associated Press merit because of her genuine dedication to authentic songwriting.
“Fearless” is an outstanding album because everything, lyrically, just feels honest and believable, as well as age-appropriate. And while I do believe some certain criticisms toward her music are appropriate, including that it doesn’t sound country in the traditional or even contemporary sense of the word, ultimately it’s the lyrics where her soul is unmistakably country, as Country music is all one diverse, extended family of sorts and while contributions among younger demographics are truly a considerably recent trend, it would be a mistake to dismiss them, as songs like “Fifteen” prove the importance of Swift on this radio format.

I can’t argue with this award, b/c she did do the things they stated above in spades.. Entertainer she is indeed.

Why is Dean not citing adultery on those divorce papers? Its pretty clear there was.
Contrats to Carrie on her engagement. I’m surprised she didn’t wait on a magazine cover for the announcement.
What has Taylor Swift/her people actually done that make her a ‘good business model’? Seems like a pretty formula good girl teen pop star to me.

WTF are they doing with Jamey?! First they put out “My Way to You,” which was okay, when they could’ve put out a 3rd single with any of the awesome songs on That Lonesome Song. Sales of that album went up 286% after he and Kid Rock did “Between Jennings and Jones” on the CMAs, so that song seems like it would’ve been a winner to me, but what do I know?
NOW they’re going back to “High Cost of Living” and doing a video when it didn’t do well on the radio 6 months ago? Well, whatever, I agree that the song deserves a second chance because it’s a darn good song, but it kinda seems like the right time for it has passed.
If it were up to me, I’d be putting out a song from the new album NOW instead of back in August, and would be concentrating on making a video for it instead of for a song that should’ve already had a video back in early ‘09. Oh well, any new Jamey is good Jamey, whether it’s songs or video. Glad Ashton’s working on an album, too.

Supergirl? Maybe Swift can just stay up there in the air and never come back down. I can dream.

If only she can sing. Oh well, the singing (or lack of) worked for Bob Dylan.

yeah but bob dylan sings in his range… albeit his latest christmas album is getting dissed by loyal fans… teehee… I love bob dylan.

Dylan doesn’t have a smooth or traditionally pleasent voice, but for years he was getting mocked for his singing unjustly – his interpretative ability was excellent and he didn’t hit a bum note.
These days, his range is completely shot and he delivers his songs in a dry blues growl, which is perfectly suited for the kind of material and production he’s working with these days.
And I love the Xmas album – it’s hilarious. I’d much rather listen to Dylan ripping full-throated through a bunch of over-the-top parodies of an Xmas album than the usual gentle elevator muzack please-god-kill-me-know-this-is-nauseating versions of ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Let It Snow’ that get foisted on us at this time of year.
Now, Tom Waits needs to put out an Xmas record!

If you think about it.. Taylor does kind of have that scrawny twiggy blonde supergirl look
Also, Ashton, no over singing this time please. If a word isn’t two syllables, please don’t make it two because it’s at the end of a line.

I got a chuckle from Bob’s christmas album too.. and some of the comments on itunes… pretty hilarious, indeed!!! Poor bob! He does like to experiment I’ll give him major kudos there.. he could just rest on his laurels he’s accomplished so much in his life, but he still continues to make music.

I love “High Cost of Living” and cannot wait for the video, but I’m ready for his next album. It would be nice to for them to dedicate that money and time to new songs since, as much as I love Jamey, That Lonesome Song is what, almost 3 or so years old when you consider it was originally released independently.
