Carrie Underwood Dazzles Halloween Audience

Staff | November 3rd, 2008 Email Share

  • Carrie Underwood’s spectacular powerhouse pipes and dazzling stage presence were on full display Friday night in Austin, TX at the Frank Erwin Center. Maybe it had something to do with the few dozen Tony Romos in the Halloween night audience. Saturday night in Houston’s Reliant Stadium was no different, but the Houston Chronicle’s Joey Guerra drew comparisons between Underwood and a real life Barbie doll.

No hair is ever out of place, and every moment of banter is perfect and polite. Maybe that’s the attraction. She’s inoffensive, middle-of-the-road fun for moms, dads, daughters and boyfriends to love. But it makes for almost no edge or spontaniety. Every moment is precisely, visibly choreographed — from the audience participation to the “intimate” song section on stools at the end of the runway (Don’t Forget to Remember Me and a solid cover of the Randy Travis tune I Told You So).

Opening act Little Big Town, who almost made Underwood seem like Loretta Lynn, didn’t fare any better.

  • John Michael Montgomery’s Time Flies and Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition earned four and five stars, respectively, from Country Weekly’s Chris Neal.
  • The New York Times‘ Jon Caramanica on Toby Keith’s newest album, That Don’t Make Me a Bad Guy:

For years Mr. Keith has been reliably blustery, but today his chest is no longer puffed. This album continues a genteel streak that he’s been cultivating lately, perhaps as a corrective to his public persona of swagger and jingoism. This is gentleman country, and what’s surprising is how natural it sounds. While these vocals lack his characteristic robustness, his gift for melody is intact. And shockingly, his heart is wide open.

  • In another article, Mr. Caramanica has a recap of one of the shows in the CMA Songwriter Series that featured songwriters Bob DiPiero, Hillary Lindsey, Brett James and Craig Morgan at Joe’s Pub in New York.
  • Raul Malo’s first album of new material in seven years, Lucky One, is due in March.
  • Blake Shelton calls his new album Startin’ Fires his most autobiographical to date and says the inclusion of several romantic songs are a result of him choosing material that puts more emphasis on his vocals.
  • Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash frontman Mark Stuart on today’s country music: (via Country California’s “Quotable Country”)

If you’re going to give me a honky-tonker, give me a real man that’s actually worked a job and doesn’t have French nails. Give me boots and pearl snap shirts. I mean George Strait, he looks tough compared to most of these guys (on mainstream country music videos), and he’s like 117 years old right now.

  • American Idol may overshadow Nashville Star, but the Star-Telegram’s Preston Jones says the country show, which hit the stage at Billy Bob’s Texas on Saturday night, provided a much more enjoyable live experience than the bloated, 10-person extravaganza that took over Dallas’ American Airlines Center in August.
  • Jake Owen hopes to release his next album in February.
  • J. Freedom de Lac published an in-depth interview with Toby Keith. He covers topics from his tough-guy posture to politics and shaving his pits.

When I saw you performing at Nissan Pavilion, I just about spit out my beer when you raised your arms and revealed a pair of clean-shaven pits. Manscape much?
On those summer tours, you get so hot and sweaty. When I come off the stage, I have to dump water out of my boots. You just want to shave your head and get down like a swimmer, you know what I mean? I think it’s funny that you noticed that. You don’t have a man-crush, do you? You want to know if I shave anything else?

  • We’ve been working on lots of changes behind the scenes here at The 9513 in order to improve the experience for all of you loyal readers out there. Here are some of those changes:

We already revealed the new podcast last week (which you should check out if you haven’t already). It’s hosted by Kelly Dearmore whose voice is like “sipping sweet tea on the front porch while listening to Dale Watson on the radio.” Not every episode will take on the same format as we try to introduce new segment features and focus in on various artists, but we have some exciting episodes planned for the future.

In a bit of sad news for The 9513, and as some of you may have already noticed, Matt C is no longer writing for us. The demands on his time had become too much and rather than allow it to affect the quality of his writing, he made the decision to step away. We’d just like to express our gratitude for his contributions to the The 9513, helping to improve its quality and steer it in the right direction during his tenure. Behind the scenes, he was an invaluable contributor and it hurts to have to let him go.

Moving on, we’ve promoted Jim Malec to Managing Editor of The 9513. Jim was the second writer we brought on board and during his time, he’s proven to be a worthwhile asset that any publication would be lucky to have. In addition to his behind the scene duties which will help maintain a seamless publication schedule, Jim will be able to spend more time contributing his own writing, so expect to see more from him.

We’d also like to thank our other writers for their contributions: Ben Cisneros for his great insight and excellent editorials and Paul W. Dennis for his awesome historical knowledge and willingness to share it with everyone. C.M. Wilcox will contribute on an occasional basis as he continues his estimable blog at Country California. And don’t be surprised if you start seeing a few more guest pieces.

Another announcement that we’re excited to make is the launch of the first annual The 9513 Country Music Awards. We’ve been planning this for awhile to figure out the best way to go about it and we’ll reveal all the details in a few weeks, but suffice it to say, our regular commenters (greater than 50 comments in the last year) will play a greater role in determining the winners.

    - Brady Vercher

  • As Brady mentioned, we currently have openings for a couple of outstanding writers here at The 9513. We are primarily looking for individuals who are interested in writing reviews and editorials, although there may be various opportunities to interview artists and attend events (such as conventions and music festivals). Potential contributors should have some experience writing for media or possesses a lucid, clear writing style. A background in journalism or the music business is preferred but is not necessary; we’re looking for people who not only love country music but who can think and write about it critically.

The 9513 has been featured in various regional and national publications including, among others, Country Weekly, the Austin Chronicle and the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, and our writers have been published in Country Weekly, American Songwriter, Denver Westword, Houston Press, St. Louis Riverfront Times, and many other print publications. If you’re interested in writing for the web’s most widely read independent country music blog, email me.

Congrats to Jim on the promotion.

    Random Dale Watson news:

Looks as though he has a new live recording available:

I’m probably going to get blasted for this. But I just don’t get everyone’s fascination with Dale Watson. He has one of the most boring voices I’ve ever heard. His songwriting is average at best. And no, I’m not a mainstream country apologist.

I guess my question is, what is it about this guy that you people love?

Nice interview from Mark Stuart. It’s been too long since some new BSoJC material was released.

Congrats to Jim, and best of luck to Matt. Hope you’re able to stick around as a regular here. I’m looking forward to the awards!

If anything perhaps the love for Dale is w/r/t his honky tonk heart and love for traditional country music. It’s just a guess on my part for while I like him, I’m nowhere near the fan that many are.

That’s a very odd smile on John Michael’s face on his new album…he almost looks a bit “backed up”, if ya get my drift

    Congrats, Jim!

Sorry to hear that Matt’s signing off. I’ve always enjoyed his posts.

As The 9513 continues on its path toward world domination, folks might be interested in taking a look back at its rise to fame using the time machine that is the Internet Archive.

So now Jim Malec can make Nashville tremble even more as Managing Editor of The 9513? Awesome! You don’t seem cranky by my standards. Hmmm….

So women at the Nashville Star concert were showering Gabe Garcia with underwear! I never saw Gabe as the Tom Jones / Englebert Humperdink type. Maybe they just forgot to mention it was mostly support hosiery….

So Blake Shelton says “the inclusion of several romantic songs are a result of him choosing material that puts more emphasis on his vocals.” And here I was expecting him to give credit to Miranda….

Matt C. contributed nice articles here at The 9513 and I will miss his writing.

Matt B, that album was actually released last year. I guess emusic just added it to their library.

Dr. No, it’s because Dale Watson is country incarnate and makes no apologies to anyone for being too country!!! Naw, I think everyone recognizes Watson for what he is and just has fun perpetuating the myth. Seriously though, one of the most boring voices you’ve heard? That sounds like a bit much.

Good to see a BSoJC fan around here, Sam G. Brody and I caught Mark Stuart and Lars Albrecht at SXSW this year for an acoustic performance and it was pretty sweet. Thanks for highlighting the interview, CMW.

Thanks for sticking with us, Lanibug. We appreciate it.

Thanks for the kind words, Frank. You should comment more often, even to if it’s just to say thanks or tell us we’re stupid.

I am often pretty complimentary (maybe borderline gushy) in my comments, so this might sound more hollow than I mean it to, but I want to say that Matt C has quickly become one of my very favorite writers on country music – in any medium, not just blogs – and I will truly miss his work here. He has been consistently eloquent and insightful, and I have to admit that his example has had a lot of impact on the formation of my own writing approach. Best of luck in your other affairs, Matt, and congratulations on a fantastic run at the 9513.

And of course, many congrats to Jim. I’m very interested to see what’s in store!

Finally… something Carrie Underwood says that I agree with 10000000000%….

Country singer Carrie Underwood may seem like America’s sweetheart, but just make sure you don’t ask her who she is voting for in this year’s presidential election.

“There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly,” gossip Web site Just Jared quotes Underwood as telling TV Guide.

“I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate,” she said. “It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions.”

The American Idol alum added that she would never want “anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to.”

Those may sound like harsh words, but Underwood thinks that musicians should stick to getting people away from “all the BS.”

“Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape,” she said

This is why I like foreign artist like Adam Gregory. He just plays and sings. Which is exactly what they are supposed to do.

Did you really say foriegn artist he is Canadian which is a part of north america, you couldn’t further from foreign.

And as for the Carrie review I’ve seen two of her concerts, and of course she follows a set list as does all artist or else it would be chaotic for the band, but she has said it many time’s before she doesn’t ever write a script for any show she just speaks and that would be why crazy funny things come out of her mouth sometimes, there is no script not like other artist (TS) who openly admitted in an interview last week that she writes out what she will say to the audience.
