Canadian Country Music Association Announces Awards Nominees
Most fans know that Canada has bred a number of certifiable country music stars. But I would wager that few realize there is a thriving country music scene north of our border, and that every day on Canadian airwaves listeners can hear the sounds of a nation of country singers whose names few of us would recognize.
Each year, Canada’s Country Music Association holds an awards ceremony to honor those artists. Below is a list of the 2009 nominees (as announced this afternoon). I’ve provided a link to each artist’s mySpace page so that you can click through and discover some new music. As is true with any scene, some of the music linked to here is inevitably better than the rest. But in the day of digital distribution there is no reason why musical discovery and appreciation should be limited by geographical boundaries.
Some of you may be familiar with Corb Lund, and a handful of these artists who have broken through into the U.S. mainstream. Dean Brody, Emmerson Drive, Paul Brandt, Terri Clark and Crystal Shawanda all should ring a bell. But I would encourage you to dig into some of these new names–especially in the “Roots Artist or Group” category, where a wealth of cool, unique stuff can be heard.

I used to love watching the CCMA’s back when they were broadcast on TNN. That’s how i discovered people like Jim Witter, Prairie Oyster and Charlie Major. I’m definitely going to have to do some Myspace exploring.

I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. I live in Canada and can hardly stand the independant scene. Some of it is good, Jason McCoy, George Canyon, but a vast majority is really bad. Production, songwriting is poor at time but it doesnt matter to programmers. The worst is played with equal enthusiasum as an Alan Jackson record.
Country radio stations in Canada play an indepedant artist almost every second or third song, the law is to play 30% Canadian artists.

Hey, where’s Fred Eaglesmith and Kendel Carson on those nomination lists? (lol)
Is Victoria Banks the same Nashville based songwriter that was featured on “The Next GAC Star” and helped co-write Sarah Buxton’s “Outside My Window” and can be seen briefly on a park bench in the music video? I wish Lisa Brokop would focus on country music again and get back in the game. Maybe she could get Tara Lyn Hart to sing her songs! It seems just like in the US a lot of the best Canadian artists exist on the fringe of the Canadian country mainstream. They need to start a “Canadiana” scene! (lol)

Wow – so much to comment on here.
-Our Indie scene in Canada is fabulous, but the problem is that hardly anyone knows about the best artists. In Alberta, alone, you can go to just about any honky tonk on any weekend and hear some incredible talent.
-Yes, it’s the same Vic Banks. She’s written some big hits for American artists in the past 5 years. In fact, a lot of the names you see on that list have full time jobs in songwriting houses in Nashville.
-Lisa Brokop is alive and well north of the border and her last few singles have been great. Her current song “Just Another Song (You Won’t Hear On The Radio)” is fantastic!!
-Tara Lyn Hart is done with music for the time being, choosing instead to do the Mom Thing. Originally from Roblin, Manitoba – she’s now in southern Ontario with her husband and family.
-The most important name for you to check out on there is Doc Walker, who are by far the best and tightest band in Canada right now. It’s a travesty that Emerson Drive is the only real Canadian band with an American deal. I guess you guys know a bit about The Road Hammers, but they’re still secondary to the Doc boys.
Congrats to all the nom’s – I’m proud of y’all!!

Noeller said “Our Indie scene in Canada is fabulous, but the problem is that hardly anyone knows about the best artists.” Well Noeller, then its your personal responsibility to keep us 9513er’s informed on such matters! (lol)
PS – Have you ever heard of Tammy Dee Gislason the self-proclaimed “Sunshine Cowgirl” who is quite the yodeler? I guess its only fans of the cowboy music scene that might know of Tammy and her alter ego “Tammy Pearl” the Canadian version of Minnie Pearl! Tammy’s been down south working in Pigeon Forge at a dinner theater, so she must have a green card! (lol)

I can certainly say that I have never heard of Miss Tammy! You lost me at “Yodeler” :)

It seems Victoria Banks is writing songs for Carrie Underwood at the present time and taking a break to attend these awards from what I gather in this article.
