Bum Economy ‘Suspends’ Business At Equity Music Group
- Economic turmoil, and probably some bad business practices, have led to what NewsChannel5.com is calling the first major casualty on Music Row–the immediately effective suspension of operations at Equity Music Group. If you’ll recall, Equity Music is the record label that Clint Black helped start in 2003. Black recently filed a lawsuit against his manager/accountant Charles Sussman, who is also a minority owner in Equity Music, for negligence.
- The Americana Music Association released a list of the “Top 100 Albums for November 19, 2007 through November 10, 2008″ and topping the list is Hayes Carll with his Lost Highway debut, Trouble In Mind.
- Craig Shelburne listed his favorite bluegrass and folk songs of 2008.
- When C.M. Wilcox isn’t writing for The 9513 he keeps busy at being unproductive, and by unproductive, I mean he writes really engaging articles introducing readers to guys like Roger Wallace, whose sound he describes as “traditional country for people who understand that George Strait isn’t really all that traditional anymore.”
Unlike Robbie Fulks, another brainy purveyor of classic country, Wallace’s take on tradition seems almost wholly free from irony. He sings like he means it, with an emotive voice that can twist and turn, whisper and wail right along with the best of his heroes.
- Faith Hill landed at No. 3 on FOXNews.com‘s countdown of the “40 Hottest Over-40 Hotties.” (via ggcolumn)
- Johnny Knoxville recently directed the video for Roger Alan Wade‘s tribute to his hero, Waylon Jennings. Knoxville, who is Wade’s cousin, boasts that the video cost about $63 dollars to make, thanks to charitable donations of time from friends and the unseen footage of Waylon from Shooter Jennings.
- Emmylou Harris recorded several public service announcements for PETA encouraging listeners to spay and neuter their animal companions and take them inside rather than keep them chained outside
- If you’ve ever dreamed of having miniature Flatt & Scruggs pendants (really, who hasn’t?), then Japanese retailer Kurama Instruments has you covered. Each pedant is molded in plastic, hand painted, then coated with clear lacquer and would make great Christmas tree ornaments or rear-view mirror hangy-downs.
- A recent article pondering the prevalence of Christianity in country music spurred Country Universe‘s Blake Boldt to ask if country music is merely a platform for spirituality? Lots of great discussion ensued.

When Equity let Little Big Town go the fat lady started singing in earnest.
The Americana list contains some fine music. I was happy to see The Bellville Outfit at # 23 and The Wrights on the list at all. I would much rather own the albums on that list than the Top 100 selling (or top radio airplay) Top 40 mainstream country albums from that same time period.
Traditional country music often was intertwined with gospel music (starting with The Carter Family) and that heritage continues somewhat these days. Although mildly spiritual content is still tolerated by Top 40 country radio, I’m sure many programmers would prefer purely secular content. In contrast I think gospel music will always remain a basic and integral part of the bluegrass music genre.

Here’s an answer to one of your recent “Mailbag” questions directly from Taylor Swift (via AllAboutCountry.com):
“Here Are The Rules For Dating Taylor Swift!
Since Taylor Swift writes her own music, it seems perfectly clear that she should write her own rules for dating. After being ditched by Joe Jonas (for Camilla Belle), Taylor turned her embarassment from the breakup into positive energy in making certain she attracts a better class of boys, er I mean men from now on.
Here are Taylor’s Dating Rules:
# 1 – I don’t call a guy first.
# 2 – Never send 2 text messages in a row.
# 3 – “If you’re like, ‘I need to talk to you’ all the time, (or) ‘Why didn’t you call me back?’… If you’re that girl, then nobody’s going to want to date you.”
Taylor, who just turned 19 last Saturday (12/13), says “I’m not typically the girl who dates a lot of guys or is in relationships a lot. Most of my life, I’ve been single. If I meet somebody who’s great, I’ll make an exception. But I’m really happy being alone… I don’t feel a sense of emptiness if I don’t have a boyfriend.”
