Bruce Robison Gives Away His Secret For Writing Hit Songs
- In their latest crop of reviews The Austin Chronicle stamps three stars apiece on The Derailers - Under the Influence of Buck, Dale Watson - The Little Darlin’ Sessions, and Sam Baker - Pretty World.
- Judging from all the glowing reviews for The Little Darlin’ Sessions you wouldn’t know why Dale Watson protested its release. Steve Horowitz writes, “The songs themselves are a hoot, if you enjoy wallowing in the black humor brought on by despair” and “then there are the tracks that are so sad that it makes one want to start drinking.”
- My contempt for city traffic usually keeps me from making the drive from South Austin to the North, but I’ve often been tempted by Dale Watson’s frequent appearances at Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon. Take Country Back has a nice writeup of this infamous Austin honky-tonk.

Don’t confuse disappointing with worst, as that list would most likely be dominated by obscure indie knockoff bands along with a couple of mainstream releases. There has to be a modicum of expectation that’s dashed upon the release of an album for it to qualify for the year’s most disappointing.
