Brad Paisley/Carrie Underwood Schedule Free Concert; Tom Russell’s Longevity; Stream Jason Eady
- Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood are scheduled to perform a free concert in downtown Nashville on Nov. 10, one day before the CMA Awards.
- Sounds Country commented on the new Bruce Robison single “Born to Roll,” which features Rodney Crowell and will be released on Robison’s next album From the Top. I can’t find a release date, but the album can be heard on Robison’s site. UPDATE: The album is available in the store section, so maybe it’s already been released?
- Alt-512 Music Musings posted a live recording of a newish Chris Wall song titled “Sad Old Cowboy.”
- Country California: Toby Keith Writing Script for She’s a Hottie Movie
- Caroline Herring’s new album, Golden Apples of the Sun, was digitally released through iTunes yesterday and CMT’s Craig Shelburne recommends one song in particular, the cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.” Listen to the song on Herring’s website and check out the album’s companion EP, Silver Apples of the Moon.
- Vince Gill likes to hear himself on the radio.
- Free Download: Just in time for Halloween, Randy Kohrs is giving away a download of the song “The Ghost Of Jack McLine” from his forthcoming album Quicksand.
- Tom Russell reveals the secret to his longevity in an interview with Rod Ames:
By staying away from any networking scene. Any kind of a deal like LA, New York, Austin, or Nashville, by trying to remain an outsider, and I have friends in all those places. But by not caving in to any category or networking scene like SXSW, or whatever, or Americana. All that stuff goes away. It doesn’t help you in any way. You know, you’ve got to find your own path, I think as a writer, and it’s very hard to do in this country, especially because the first thing they want to do is categorize you. What do you do? Country? Folk? Americana? What? And my stuff has always been outside those boundaries and living in a place like El Paso, way off the map, has allowed me to extend myself as a writer I think.
- Friends in high places: Jamey Johnson was among the attendees at Ivanka Trump’s wedding on Sunday.
- My Kind of Country: Will mainstream country eventually rediscover its roots, or will those who want more roots-oriented country have to look elsewhere? Is the genre splitting into mainstream and non-mainstream niches? And what exactly is mainstream, anyway?
- Stream Jason Eady’s entire When the Money’s All Gone album on iLike. My Kind of Country rated it an A- and it’s been one of my favorites of the year thus far.

Is Dave Haywood going solo? This and many other of country music's most pressing questions answered in the September edition of The 9513's world famous Mailbag!
Caroline Herring likes to sing songs about life in the South. No, not exactly like Justin Moore and Jason Aldean...

As much as we love girl singers, we love songs about girl singers even more. Here's just a few of the many tribute songs out there.

Hmmm…I really want the Herring album, but it’ll be $1.50 cheaper on Amazon on November 10 at $8.99 and no tax.

OT: Does anyone here have and/or like Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle’s collaboration album, ‘Lets Just Stay Here’? I’m debating whether or not I want to buy it since I can’t download it. i usually like a lot of the same things y’all do, so any input would be nice!

Well, I may as well be the one to get the ball rolling on this one: Toby Keith working on script for She’s A Hottie Movie.
Wow. Now, I didn’t hate Broken Bridges, and Beer For My Horses had a couple funny spots, but an entire movie based on She’s A Hottie??

It’s fake news.

I like hearing Vince on the radio, too. Not as often as I’d like though.

If you look at the actual website where the story is regarding Toby Keith writing a new script, its called “fake news”. So I’m pretty sure this is made up, but would love for him to be in another movie!

Personally I think it’s a killer album, but I’m a big fan of NQ Arbuckle already. There is a cool Corb Lund cameo on it. So not knowing anything about your particular tastes in music, I would say if you like Corb Lund and other fringe country artists you would probably like it

Kelly, that is one of the most off the wall comments I’ve seen around these here parts in awhile….
Everything was going well at Ivanka’s wedding reception until Jamey asked her “Hey honey, are them things real?” (lol)
I enjoyed watching the Sara Watkins video but trying to be a female “After The Gold Rush” era Neil Young clone with a ukelele was a bit much.
Is it a backhanded compliment to Caroline “Red” Herring that the song Craig Shelburne likes best is a cover of a Cyndi Lauper pop song? Hmm… (PS – Kasey Chambers also did a cover of that song that was borderline unlistenable.)

Rick’s Random Tidbits: Some interesting comments were made over at the CMT website today! No, I’m not talking about Alison Bonaguro digging on “Rockin’ The Beer Gut”, but rather the Delbert McClinton interview. Here are my favorite two paragraphs from the 20 year Nashville resident:
“”You know, Nashville’s a good place with a lot of good people, but I think a whole lot of what goes on in Nashville is bullsh*t. Just like everybody else does,” he says. “A lot of people don’t want to admit it, but the whole industry is driven by false conceptions, in my opinion. I’m not going to name names or give examples, but it all sounds like it came out of the Mike Curb School of Music.”"
“When he talks about owning his publishing and masters in a partnership with New West Records — and says that he’s receiving album royalties for the first time ever — he concludes with this impression: “It’s a beautiful thing. No more talking jive with those stupid f***ing lawyers.”"
Its a good read:

Actually Rick, I seen her blog on ‘Rockin the Beer Gut’ and I immediately wanted to come on here and be like ‘Hey Guys, guess what, Alison Bonaguro likes Rockin The Beer Gut’ like in kindergarten, but i stopped myself cuz im an adult now. Thanks for finding a credible way of bringing it up. Needed to be said I think.

Alison Bonaguro likes Rockin The Beer Gut’
Is anybody really surprised by this revelation?
October 28, 2009 at 11:48 pm Permalink
I would hardly call it a revelation.

Alison Bonaguro might not actually like “Rocking The Beer Gut.” She might not even like country music, for all I know. She comes across as extremely disingenuous to me. Not exactly sure why, but I don’t trust anything she says (unless its verified by another source). I suspect she says a lot of the things she does for dramatic effect, whether or not she thinks they are true. Maybe I’m wrong but thats the impression I get.
She also had a post a few days ago that seemed like no more than an advertisement for some cheesy picture frame with the lyrics to “I Hope You Dance” printed on it. It came across as an advertisement disguised as a blog post, which lowers her credibility in my mind. I mean, does she really like these lame frames or did someone pay her a bit to promote them?
She included some story about her family that seemed more over the top than the cheesiest ad about how “good moms” buy tide or Jif or whatever for the kids they love more than anything! (Actually, I think she would be good at marketing products to slightly unsophisticated women, and she could possibly make a very good career doing that. She does have a certain kind of talent). Maybe she does like the frames, but its hard to tell and thats why I don’t trust her.
But I give her credit, her blog posts seem to get good responses and they probably generate a lot of clicks. She’s successful at what she does; and I admit to reading her blog. I don’t think she’s credible but she is entertaining and thats probably all CMT really cares about – that people visit the blog for whatever reason.

I’m trying to come up with an explanation for the persistent slagging of Alison Bonaguro that doesn’t make the perps look like – to use the characterization du jour – 8th graders. So far I’m not getting anywhere.
October 29, 2009 at 10:36 am Permalink
Good point, Jon. You are the torch-bearer for positive and uplifting comments around here, it isnt in your nature to provide unwarranted and condescending remarks at any given time. Frankly, I am shocked you cant come up with an explanantion for the “slagging”…I’m sure you’ll come up with someone to blame soon enough.
October 29, 2009 at 11:36 am Permalink
Probably all the slagging of Bonaguro is childish, and 8th grade-like. But Alison Bonaguro brings out the worst in many of us.

I just want to add that since Alison was gratified to see a song celebrating women of all shapes and sizes, it may be time for her to hit the gym and hire that personal trainer! This might explain why Alison complains her hubby spends too much time at the golf course! The game is afoot….
November 1, 2009 at 10:04 pm Permalink
Thanks, Jon.
And Rick? You know what? I actually never said in the blog that I personally had a beer gut I needed to get rid of. Just that I was happy to hear a country song that every girl could appreciate. So no need to hit the gym. But should I ever get some extra love around the waist, I’ll totally take your advice.
As for you Sam, we clearly have different decorating tastes. I’m into the whole Shabby Chic thing. So I love that frame, and having Womack lyrics on it just takes its value up a few notches.
