Brad Paisley Leads Election Day Releases With Instrumental Album
- Album releases for the week of 11/4/2008 include:
- Cybergrass has more information on Strong Enough, the new album from Beth Stevens, who is well-known from her former partnership with her sister April, as the Stevens Sisters.
- Shrouded in a cloud of melodrama, it’s almost impossible to separate the myth from the facts when it comes to the life of Hank Williams, but Bill Friskics-Warren says two recent projects–a Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit and The Unreleased Recordings–help recast him in a revealing new light, without whitewashing the intemperance and scandal.
- Listen to Dobro wizard Jerry Douglas on Mountain Stage as he highlights songs from his latest solo album, Glide.
- CMT launched CMT Music Pass yesterday, a new program that offers fans the chance to win tickets to concerts all across America.
- Carrie Underwood graces the cover of the December issue of Elle magazine, and in an interview on their website she traverses from the subjects of Michael Phelps and Tony Romo to celebrity gossip and her audition for American Idol. In an accompanying video of her photo shoot for the magazine, the photographer, inspired by Farrah Fawcett, has Underwood adorn black eyeliner and frizzled hair.
- USA Weekend published a story from each of the members of Rascal Flatts about their differing personalities, families and life on the road.
- The Star-Telegram’s Preston Jones on Play, the new instrumental album from Brad Paisley:
Most of the disc showcases glistening riffs dramatically expanding country music’s boundaries, incorporating jazz, blues and rock to a degree that casts Paisley’s back catalog in an intriguing light (he does sing a few tunes here). Plenty of pleasing pickin’ to be found here, yet it can’t help but feel a tad slight.
The Los Angeles Times’ Randy Lewis says: “The pairing with Owens might be the album’s highlight, a posthumous duet that niftily quotes Buck’s great country instrumental “Buckaroo,” then retools his 1964 song “Hello Trouble” on its way to completing a latter-day recording its composer never finished.”
- Keeping with the Paisley theme, when he preformed on the Opry tribute show for Little Jimmy Dickens on Saturday he was joined on stage by a female fan who proceeded to hug him during his guitar solo for “Waitin’ On a Woman” and stuck a gift in his back pocket. After the song was over Paisley had to explain to the radio audience what happened:
“That’s a first for me right there! Let’s talk to the folks listening on the radio right now…about what your missing. If that guitar solo sounded funny at the end it’s because I was being attacked by a beautiful young woman who jumped up on the stage and accosted me… and stuck a Christmas ornament in my pocket that says, ‘I love you Brad. Thanks for making my 18th birthday special, Love Kim’…I can’t say her last name because she’s going to be prosecuted for this probably. Well, welcome to Tennessee, and enjoy our penal facilities while you’re here,” laughed Paisley.
- Watch a video tribute to Little Jimmy Dickens from the Opry show.
- Congrats to Chris D. (DJ Mormz‽), Ginger (KittyKato) and Peter (Cretin), who will each receive an autographed copy of Toby Keith’s That Don’t Make Me A Bad Guy from our most recent “Free Music” series. Someone will be touch with you shortly to get your contact info.

We've labored long and hard to come up with our list of the Top 10 Country Albums of 2008. Click here to see who claimed the honor of the year's top album, as chosen by The 9513's staff and writers.
Don’t confuse disappointing with worst, as that list would most likely be dominated by obscure indie knockoff bands along with a couple of mainstream releases. There has to be a modicum of expectation that’s dashed upon the release of an album for it to qualify for the year’s most disappointing.
Join host Kelly Dearmore as he shines the light on several noteworthy album releases you might have missed and interviews various artists, from Sarah Borges to Trent Willmon and Reckless Kelly to Wade Bowen, in the first two episode of The 9513 podcast.

Since Underwood’s Elle magazine review is noted here’s another recent quote of hers from TV Guide:
Underwood ‘loses all respect’ for vocal celebs
While stars are all over the place pushing their political views, Carrie Underwood isn’t saying a word. “There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly,” she says in the Nov. 10 issue of TV Guide. “I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate.”
She continues: “It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions. I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to.”
Now let’s all vote on what we think of that.

It would be great if Brad could get the “Buckaroo” cover on country radio! The Opry Band loves to play that song and I’m always glad to hear it.

How exactly is a celebrity endorsing a candidate implying that anyone can’t make up their own mind?
