Brad Paisley Recording Duet With Buck Owens
- The forthcoming Brad Paisley instrumental album won’t be strictly instrumentals. According to GAC, there will be three or four vocal pieces, including a duet with Buck Owens.
Brad got permission to work with the track from Buck’s company, and Brad thinks it’s “the most special thing on the record.”
“He wrote a song that works great as a duet,” Brad explains. “He played guitar, he sang on it, he did the harmony parts. It’s perfect. It’s incredibly perfectly tuned… The theme of the song is running into someone you haven’t seen in a while, and anyway, he and I are singing that to one another now on this record. And it’s really cool.”

- Fret not if you missed the CMT Music Awards last night, we’ve got you covered. Taylor Swift took Video of the Year and CMT — and pretty much everyone else who covers music — has a recap of the show. Here’s a fancy list of the winners and a lot of pictures.
- Peter Cooper says a whiff of country tradition carried backstage when Snoop Dogg, who donned all-black to honor his hero Johnny Cash, made an appearance. Meanwhile, Jason Aldean compared boots with Snoop and boasted that the rapper said he was a pimp.
In the midst of his interview with PEOPLE, the Father Hood star stopped mid-sentence to gape at LeAnn Rimes, who was posing for pictures nearby. “Wow – damn! Who is that?” he asked.
Upon learning her identity, Snoop gushed, “She is beautiful! Wow, wow, wow.”
- Funny picture of Jay Leno sporting a pearl snap denim shirt and posing with Ryan Bingham.
- Coming in at No. 80 on Country Universe’s “100 Greatest Women” feature is the original female outlaw, Jessi Colter.
- Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley is surprised at the success his band has had in the short amount of time they’ve been together.
- Another fine edition of Galleywinter’s 20 Questions with the up and coming Waco-based Modern Day Drifters.
On this album, you cover “Angel From Montgomery” by John Prine. What made you want to cover that song in particular? Were there other songs you considered covering for the album instead?
We never really considered covering any other songs. The Prine tune is one I had been singing for a while and we felt compelled to include it after recording it. It always gets such an amazing response at the shows, that I knew it must go on the album. - Kristen
- Los Angeles Times’ Randy Lewis describes Hayes Carll as following “in the mighty footsteps of such Lone Star State country-folk-rock luminaries as Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Joe Ely. There’s a bit of Steve Earle folksy philosopher lurking there too, but Carll’s voice, as a writer and a singer, is as uncommonly distinctive as it is assured.”

Forgotten Artists: Goldie Hill Had Carl Smith and Goldie Hill been born 30 or 40 years later, they might have been like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw–the dominant married couple in country music.
Miranda Lambert - “More Like Her” This kind of material, as opposed to her tough-chick-done-wrong romps like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Gunpowder and Lead,” is where her real promise lies
Joey Rory - “Cheater, Cheater” It’s actually downright frivolous, but that just makes it all the more fun. And really, are you allowed to say “ho” on country radio?
Josh Gracin - “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” Despite initial marketing that touted the album as deep and personal, “Unbelievable (Ann Marie)” is anything but deep or personal.
Josh Turner - "Everything Is Fine" Turner is the rare example of an artist who records material that’s both quality and trademark.
Darryl Worley - "Tequila On Ice" A groovy mid-tempo that sways, a refreshing reprieve from the exhausting pace of a format that clamors for loud music and swelling choruses.
Blake Shelton - "She Wouldn't Be Gone" It’s all about nailing the melody rather than providing a legitimate interpretation that accentuates the lyrical content, although Shelton does do a pretty good job of injecting what limited emotion he can.
Don’t look now, but Darius Rucker, lead singer of 90s rock group Hootie & The Blowfish, has a country hit on his hands. What you probably haven’t heard is that Rucker is the first black artist to chart a single in the country top 20 since Charley Pride last did it in 1988.
News that former Sugarland member and co-founder Kristen Hall is suing her ex-mates, to the tune of $1.5 million, goes a long way towards providing a bit of context regarding the Atlanta singer/songwriter’s sudden departure from the group.
In Memory of Don Helms (1927 - 2008) Helms dated back to a time when an excellent four or five piece band and a good singer were all that were needed to make great country music. No drums, no light shows, no production tricks in the recording studio–just good music.

Its great to hear about the Buck and Brad duet. And don’t forget about Buck’s duet with The Derailers (from “Full Western Dress”) on the tear jerker “Waltz of the Angels”. Something Buck and Bonnie might be doing right now….
For those Texans who need more “real country music” than the ACL is providing this year, here’s a portion of an article from AllAboutCountry that should be of interest:
“Willie’s Place Truck Stop Grand Re-Opening July 1st, Featuring Alternative Fuels, Food And Entertainment!
Alternative fuel truck stop and entertainment hub Willie’s Place will host a grand re-opening with a week of shows beginning July 1. The newly designed and renovated Earth Bio-Willie Theater, named for Willie Nelson’s brand of renewable bio-diesel, is at the center of the week’s celebration.
Ray Wylie Hubbard and David Allan Coe will perform all week, beginning July 1.
On Thursday, July 3, Willie himself is the headliner for a star-studded grand opening concert that will also feature Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Hubbard, Coe and others in a day-long show.
Proceeds benefit the Freddy Powers Parkinson’s Foundation, founded in 2006 in the name of the award-winning singer, songwriter and producer who suffers from the disease. The foundation benefits Texans with Parkinson’s, as well as their caregivers.”
Now that’s what I call a country show!

There’s no Charles Kelley in Little Big Town. Maybe you mean Lady Antebellum?

Yea, that other band that starts with an “L”
:P

Rick: You’re right about there being a low number of “real country” acts at the ACL festival. The variety of all kinds of country (DBT, Shooter, Bingham, Asleep at the wheel, among others) along with various forms of rock, soul and punk make the ACL Festival great, in my opinion. Most Texans have very little to complain about in the way of having a ton of chances to see great line-ups of real country acts throughout the year.

Kelly, what I read about the Texas country music scene here on The 9513 makes me so envious I want to cry some honky tonk tears….
I just wanted to dedicate this red carpet picture from the CMT Awards show to Hollerin’ Ben:

Rick,
there certainly isn’t a scene out here in LA like there is in Texas, but right now I wouldn’t say that we’re shy on honky tonk talent at all.
Check out Mike Stinson, Dave Gleason, David Serby, West of Texas, Jaimi Shuey, Merle Jagger, The Lonesome Spurs, 5 o’clock somehwere, The Cheatin’ Kind, and The Road Kill Kings to start off with. There are a handful of other bands as well.
Part of the upside of being a fan when the scene has yet to really be discovered is that the shows aren’t that packed so you get to check out the bands in a low key environment.

The MTV Awards huh? Hmmmm! What does it say when that entire show made Carrie seem like one of the “traditional” artists? All you Carrie bashers may just be wishing she was still dominating as we usher in the Taylor Swift tweeny bopper era!
Taylor Swift couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket if her life depended on it. She and Miley Cyrus have the same vocal coach obviously. Next we can get some great songs about puberty and really be cranking out the hits. Cheatin’ 8th graders and virus attacks on MySpace pages. We can go for the heartbreak of the whole neekid pics over the cell phone ruining my life lyrics! Can’t wait. Now that’s hardcore country right there boy. Woo-Hoo! Sorry Chris N. but them’s the facts!
I actually liked Mayo (with apologies to Ben!) in the whole “Can You Duet?” thing. Some good talent went through that show IMHO. It’s worth another look Friday. Naomi can still melt my butter! I just call the guy on the panel “Dude”! Nice high & tight he’s sportin’ too! :-o
Would someone please tell LeeAnn Rimes to put some damn clothes on. I’m about sick of seeing her scrawny butt all over the place. What a waste! A beautiful voice and great performer turning into be a Britney wannabe! She’ll have to earn my respect back now.
At least Ashton Shepherd got the most face time of all the newbies. With a friggin’ HOUSE BAND? What was up with that?
Some bright spots though:
Keith Urban and Brooks & Dunn
Alan Jackson
Sugarland with Little Big Town
Brad Paisley and Bocephus
ROTFLMAO at the whole staged lookin’ bimbo jumpin’ the stage on Toby thing.
Faith & Tim - twice! McGraw was hysterical with his quips. I felt his pain.
Chesney wasn’t too bad.
Alison Krauss looking like she was forced to attend with a loaded shotgun at her back. :-o
Carrie’s performance at the end was solid and she was classy. She can definitely wail!
May God have mercy on my soul and give me the strength to never watch another trainwreck CMT Awards ever again! ;-)

The “Dude” with the nice high and tight is or was Taylor Swift’s voice coach. Crazy, eh? I kinda liked the couple with the dude in the overalls on Can You Duet.

Wow, so the title threw me off! I have a lot of family from Bakersfield and have been to the Crystal Palace a few times, including right before Buck passed away. He’s always been special to that town. You couldn’t understand a word he said there for awhile, but you could understand every word he sang. I love that. I’m interested in seeing what Brad comes up with!
ACL Music Festival here I come… :)

Brady, the “dude in the overalls” is songwriter Rory Lee Feek. He’s written some mighty good tunes. his wife, Joey Martin has even recorded a record of her own, which is available at eMusic.com. It’s not bad. Rory is one of the writers behind songs like “The Chain Of Love,” Collin Raye’s “Someone You Used To Know,” Blaine Larsen’s “How Do You Get That Lonely,” and “Some Beach.”

In my humble opinion, “How Do You Get That Lonely” was an offense against humanity.
It was at least offensive to the country music tradition.
It’s not like country music is concerned with things like existential angst, going through a crisis of faith, or experiencing self-loathing.
and the fact that they got some kid to sing it.
man I hate that song.
April 16, 2008 at 4:26 am Permalink
Oh, my. I had forgotten how much I dislike “How Do You Get That Lonely” until it Ben reminded me. Blech.
April 16, 2008 at 7:47 am Permalink
ok, can someone please tell Naomi Judd that she isnt as funny, hip, cool, or intersesting as she seems to think she is, at least Mayo has a twnagy, cute (sexy maybe??) voice. If Judd is going to wear so much darn make-up, can she please make herself look a tad more tan than your average corpse???

Thanks for the info, Matt B. You keep on top of your stuff.

“Would someone please tell LeeAnn Rimes to put some damn clothes on.”
I just want to note my disagreement with that sentiment for the record.
April 16, 2008 at 10:25 am Permalink
WEll, since I had a best friend commit suicide, I could relate to “How Do You Get That Lonely.” I guess that’s the power of music.
Brady, you’re welcome.
April 16, 2008 at 10:26 am Permalink
I should add that I was in High School when my friend died. Thus the song made even more sense. Also, the song only works with a High School aged singer singing it, which Larsen was when he recorded it.
April 16, 2008 at 12:10 pm Permalink
Love the idea of the duet.
I’m ELATED Taylor won!
Randy Travis, wow. The guy could sing about a moldy can of tuna and move you more than anything on radio today. Here’s to me being the soon-owner of his latest work.

Buck Owens is still alive???
Snoop’s never seen LeAnn Rimes???
Why didn’t anyone tell me about this ….
(Just kidding ….)
