Billy Joe Shaver Recovering After Heart Surgery; Undercover Jewel; Kenny Chesney’s New Single
- Billy Joe Shaver is recovering from minor heart surgery and is expected to resume performing in August.
- Even with pancreatic cancer Charlie Louvin maintains his optimism and seems as vital as ever.
- Funny or Die, the comedy website co-founded by Will Ferrell, posted a new video featuring Jewel in disguise performing at a karaoke bar.
- In an interview with The Boot, Jerrod Niemann discloses that Jamey Johnson provided the encouragement he needed to make his current album.
Being friends with Jamey as long as I have, we both know not only the good times we’ve seen, but the hard times. I think after Jamey made his album with his band and Mercury Records picked it up, Jamey knew that I had things to say as an artist. I know I’m not the only person who he’s approached and advised to go make records. I don’t think the other ones have surfaced yet, but they will. Jamey is not only a guy that holds the torch for traditional country music, but he has his own voice and no one is going to tell him what to do. He is sort of a fearless leader in his own way of doing his own thing. I’m certainly not trying to be Jamey, and I know nobody else is. But what Jamey is going to do is put his hand down and pick you up and say, “Man, go make some music that you want to be heard,” and that’s what we did.

- Miss Leslie digs Mike Stinson‘s songwriting.
- Kenny Chesney sent his new single, “The Boys of Fall,” to radio this week. Listen on NashvilleGab.
- Kelly Dearmore on Blue-Eyed Angels, the upcoming record from Rob Baird:
Baird’s roots-rock vibe, filled with electric slide guitar, fiddle, harmonica and organ bring to mind some of the less gritty tunes from Kentucky bad-ass Chris Knight.
Now, I don’t get the impression that Baird could take Knight in a fight behind one of the bars he plays at, but as I roll through the rest of the CD, Baird is displaying a great ability to craft a catchy country-rock song. The production is a tad slick, and his voice isn’t half as distinctive or aching as Knight’s is, but again, I keep listening. I keep finding myself really digging this record.
- Katie Armiger wants your help choosing the title of her next album. The choices are: Confessions Of A Nice Girl, Guitar Picks & Lipstick, and High Heels & No Expectations.
- A cable company in Omaha, Nebraska bought Roy Rogers‘ horse Trigger for $266,500 at a recent auction.
- The A.V. Club’s Nathan Rabin got around to covering Waylon Jennings at last after 38 entries in his Nashville or Bust column.
- Canadian songwriter Fred Eaglesmith opened his latest Mountain Stage show with a couple of his songs that were recently covered by mainstream country stars. Alan Jackson tackled “Freight Train” for his newest project and Miranda Lambert covered “Time to Get a Gun” on hers. Listen to Eaglesmith’s versions on NPR.

Music Fog posted video of Chatham County Line performing the title track from its new album, Wildwood, which Juli reviewed yesterday here on The 9513.

Thanks for another link to John Rich. Great advertisement. I/m glad this website likes him so well.
I like Toby for a lot of reasons but “Trailerhood” and songs/videos like it are wearing a bit thin. Like Brooks and Dunn still singing about teenage boys and their tricks, trucks, and girls. Time to grow up gentlemen.
Kudos to Mr. Louvin. Ah Charlie and Ira. Now THAT was a real duo act. Not like the one-sided acts like B&D or, gag, Sugarland.

Just got word that Hank Cochran passed away this morning. Another great legendary songwriter lost in the field of country music.

I’m looking forward to the Rob Baird album, nice to see positive reviews already.

Trigger wasn’t bought by a cable company (or, at least how I interpret the phrase “cable company”, e.g., Cox, Comcast, etc.). It was bought by RFD TV. Though, that said, I’m still not sure what they’re going to do with it..

Toby’s Trailerhood is a hoot! Had to watch it again!
Jewel/Karen video was awesome too!

That Jewel video is a good spot of fun. I like the older guy who says “I think Karen actually sang a bit better than Jewel”! (lol) Must have been the fake nose…
Its nice to see that Jamey Johnson has become a Nashville replacement for John Rich in giving worthy unknown artists a helping hand, kind words of encouragement, and a kick in the keister when needed!
Can we provide fill in album title recommendations for Katie Armiger’s new project? My choice would be “My Chances at Country Radio Are Toast!”.
So Kelly wrote: “Baird’s roots-rock vibe, filled with electric slide guitar, fiddle, harmonica and organ bring to mind some of the less gritty tunes from Kentucky bad-ass Chris Knight.” Thanks, Kelly! Per usual that’s all I need to know…(lol)
Fred Eaglesmith is a fine songwriter but his singing voice has always been his weakest link. When I go see him in concert it’s primarily to hear the wacky stories he tells between songs and he’s a master at that.

I love me some Fred.
If you have not seen him live, you should. Every bit as funny as he is lyrically gifted.

“Rich’s opinion on same-sex marriage is apparently informed by the seemingly unrelated experience of having once been legally barred from marrying his aunt, a circumstance about which he still harbors ill feelings.”
Am I to understand that John Rich is into inner family marriage? Like some parts of the Mormon movement? 0.o

Trailerhood is really funny to watch. Brought a few smiles on my face. But I fear that Toby Keith is making himself into an all-out redneck of sorts. But it’s his legacy and desire so cheers to ya Mr. Keith.

Freddy is one of our national treasures up here. Rick is right when he says that the “wacky stories” in between songs are worth the price of admission alone. Such a funny guy, and it’s great to see another one of our fabulous songwriters get some recognition down south.
Love love LOVE the Jewel/Karen vid – frig that’s some funny stuff!!
Very cool that JJ is helping out new artists – can’t think of anyone better to do it!
Speaking of Jerrod Niemann – how AWESOME is it that the band (I assume…) is called “The HUNG Jury”??!! Very cheeky – VERY funny!! Best band name ever…
