Billy Joe Shaver Indicted In Shooting
- Honky tonk hero Billy Joe Shaver was indicted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawfully carrying a handgun by a license holder on licensed premises on Wednesday for his involvement in an April 2007 shooting. Both are considered felonies punishable with prison time. Shortly after the shooting, Brady had a chance to interview Shaver and as expected he didn’t want to say too much, but he did comment on a new song Dale Watson had written about the incident:
What do you think about Dale Watson running around singing this song..
Dale is a good friend of mine and I don’t care what he does. Everything he does is right because he’s such a good guy.
Right after that incident, we saw him over at the Broken Spoke…
I know and he called me up… he called me up and says, “Can I do this one?” I said, “Dale, I didn’t say that. I said “Why you wanna do this?”" I didn’t say “Where you want it?” And he said, “Yeah, but it sounds better that way,” and I said, “Well Dale, if you feel good about doing it, go ahead and do it.” He said, “I already done it.” And we were playing in Waco and he got a bigger write up than I did. Of course, Waco’s that way.
- P.J. Tobia has a lengthy, but engrossing, article in Nashville Scene on the life of Phil Gernhard, a guy who by all accounts knew how to pick songs that would be career-defining hits. He picked all four of the No. 1 singles from Rodney Atkins’ latest album, but a few days after “Cleaning This Gun” went to the top of the charts he committed suicide.

She and Mr. Nicholson just released a crisply charming album, “Rattlin’ Bones” (Essence/Sugar Hill), that draws from the wellspring of American bluegrass and folk music. Produced by Mr. Nicholson and Nash Chambers, Ms. Chambers’s older brother, it’s an unplugged alt-country record lightly sweetened by pop inclinations. The show struck a similar balance: it felt leisurely, even informal, but also supremely polished.

Hank cranked up loud, feelin’ alright
This kinda stuff’s pretty tough to write

I attended the Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson concert in Santa Monica on Sept. 12 and experienced first hand what the reviewer described, less the opening act. Kasey’s normal concerts with her full band are usually deafening at full rock concert voulme levels, so her acoustic show was a welcome chnage of pace. My only complaint was that the set was way too brief……
Paul King over at Nashville Hype got to ask Robin Meade how she came to be hostess on GAC Star and it all revolves around Kenny Chesney! (lol)

I think i will make and sell t-shirts that say “Free Billy Joe” on the front and “Where Do You Want It” on the back…man that would be a big seller…

I’d buy one, if ya’know, it wasn’t too expensive…

well, if all the proceeds are gonna go to billy joe’s legal fees, then they cant be too cheap ;-)

Is the “He needed shootin’” defense still valid in Texas? Because if Billy Joe is waving a gun at somebody, I’m thinking the guy had it coming.

Amen!! In fact, it was downright gentlemanly for Shaver to inquire as to where the fella would prefer to be shot…

I would just like to say that in his new video, John Michael Montgomery looks like a sad and uncomfortable man. He lacks any spark of his old self. I always liked him and his music back when he was on the top of the charts, and not his brother. I hope music has not become a burden to him.

I think JMM has has some serious medical issues. I’m not sure what exactly but I seem to remember reading that somewhere. Even at that, JM’s bad days are better than Eddie’s good days – musically speaking.

It is an awesome cd.
Oh, and BTW: Why is it okay for Dick Cheney to shoot people in the face, but when Billy Joe Shaver does it, all of a sudden its come kind of crime?

Sorry, “some kind of crime.”

Speaking of guns, is The 9513 going to review the new Pat Garrett song “Moose Shootin’ Mama” about Sarah Palin? Hmmmm……
Rick’s Random Tidbits: I like Kasey and Shane’s new album but I still contend there is a lack of stylistic variety among far too many of the songs. At the same time I received “Rattlin Bones” I also got Kimber Sparks’ “Its Her Turn” and due to Bill Chambers’ production and co-writing skills I much prefer Kimber’s album. I will still be listening to Kimber’s CD long after Kasey’s “Bones” have gotten buried in my piles of CD’s…..
Emily West: I just acquired an advance copy of Emily West’s self-titled debut album and was really disappointed. I think Emily is a great gal and I like her vocals BUT her debut album sounds like Miranda Lambert mixed with Faith Hill and then processed through the Nashville Mainstream Music Machine sytem. I like the slow ballads where Emily’s vocals shine but she sounds generic on most of the up tempo stuff. I didn’t hear anything that sounded even remotely like a beakthrough radio hit in today’s Top 40 environment on the album. I can’t see Emily being kept on the Capitol roster much longer unless she records some much stronger material….
PS – Amber Digby’s new “Passion, Pride, and What Might Have Been…” kicks some serious Texas honky tonkin’ ass……

Met JMM at a radio station in Phila(WXTU). The nicest man you ever want to meet. He sang a few songs in the studio…..it wasn’t good. He couldn’t hit many notes…keeping in mind it was 9am, still wasn’t good. We were big fans and still very disappointed. He talked with us about a 1/2 an hour at breakfast, and he really has had a tough time in recent years, lots of surgeries, drug abuse due to the meds he was on for his health problems, and just overall bad luck and he’s getting very little in the way of respect. He even told us the hotel gave his room away before he got there, but he did say he was able to get the bus driver a room and he(John Michael) voluntarily slept in the bus. Like I said, really nice guy and I wish him success, but his voice was pretty rough. Hope he makes a comeback, he deserves it.
Really dislike his brother also, can’t stand the guy or his music.
