Caroline Herring likes to sing songs about life in the South. No, not exactly like Justin Moore and Jason Aldean...
The 9513's resident historian Paul W. Dennis sits down for a chat with country music legend Gene Watson.
As much as we love girl singers, we love songs about girl singers even more. Here's just a few of the many tribute songs out there.

man, I was at that bare Jr show…there was hardly anyone there, so me and the vidoegrpaher probably saw each other!

Not mentioned but worth noting is the passing Friday night of Mike Seeger, one of the giants of American roots music – as performer, as producer and as documentarian. There are plenty of obits around, but for background, I will immodestly recommend a piece I did for No Depression several years ago, available here: http://archives.nodepression.com/2003/09/true-stories/.

Glad to hear Randy Kohrs got his instruments back. Maybe next time The Lost Trailers will get back their trailer.
Jason Aldean has found today’s path to mainstream country stardom, play unabashed rock music with a token country name check tossed in. Crikey mate!
Taylor Swift and her band members as KISS and the dancing Hershey’s kisses is total prank overkill. This would have been better played on the ultimate prankster Brad Paisley. Oh well…

Actually a pretty funny and cool idea there by Swift and her band… I’m impressed.

The sad part about Jason Aldean’s statement is that he fails to see how un-country his song is and that one big hit will not keep a career going for years. I wonder if he thinks of himself as an artist. None of his hits have been written by him, they all sound alike, and that dirty, country frat boy look hides a voice that has some qualities but is hidden by bad music, and too much of a desire to be the popular guy.

Brody, I noticed no mention of CMT’s Can You Duet winner. Anybody watch? Any opinions of the winner, Steel Magnolia? Any non-winning acts like Joey + Rory last year that might be critically successful?
August 10, 2009 at 12:18 pm Permalink
I dont know about Brody, but I watched, and I’ll say that I really like Steel Magnolia, and see no reason why they cant be successful. I have been impressed with the actual talent on both seasons of this show.
They are younger and less experienced than J+R, but that Ryan and Avalon have some potential to make some noise, but as with The Stella’s, i would see them more in an Americana setting than your typical mainstream setting.

How to tell this web site isn’t run by 15-year-old girls: The lead story is about Bill Anderson instead of Taylor Swift winning two awards last night at the Teen Choice Awards.

@Ken: I’m glad Steel Magnolia won, they’re really good =) And I really enjoyed the return of Caitlin & Will too… good finale
Way to go Taylor! xD Lol, that was so funny!

Rick’s Random Tidbits: Actor Tim Roth, who starred last season in the Fox network’s “Lie To Me” series, was in attendance at the Sunday afternoon Grand Ole Echo free country music show here in L.A. yesterday. Turns out Tim has a son (who I’d guess to be about 11 years old) who is quite a guitar picker! Tim’s son was performing in the open air back patio as part of an acoustic group and handled lead guitar duties. Tim is of diminutive stature (like Justin Moore without the cowboy hat) and is constantly rolling his own tobacco cigarettes! And here I thought Kelli Williams was an Amazon giant! (lol)

I just read that on GAC Ken. Tell me it ain’t so! Gosh…I mean…there’s I know one good singer and one good guy but…gosh, I’ll miss them. Both very funny guys. I know Ronny will be out with a solo soon. I imagine Kix will continue with his countdown, wine venture and other things he’s got in the fire.

If Taylor didn’t win some teen awards, I’d think pigs must be flying. Shees…uh that’s a given.
August 10, 2009 at 7:27 pm Permalink
Okay, who told Taylor who KISS is?
August 10, 2009 at 7:38 pm Permalink
I’d be interested to see if Ronnie releases a solo album. I mean, it’ll sound completely different… right?
Seriously though, they’re a great act, and though they’ve been less relevant lately, they did have some of the best tunes of the 90’s and a handful of decent songs in the last ten years.
I hope this rejuvenates them as artists…
August 10, 2009 at 7:45 pm Permalink
That’s how I’d sum up the rise and fall of their career too, Mike.

OMG, you mean like Brooks and Dunn are calling it quits next year! OMG! (lol) I kinda lost interest after “Neon Moon”…

We’re gonna miss them when theyre gone.

Quick observation: On the current Mediabase Top 50 country singles chart the only female artists in the Top 20 are Taylor Swift (at #1) and Kellie Pickler (at #13), a whopping 10%! I think that’s the lowest percenage I’ve ever seen at any given point in time. Equally surprising is that Carrie Underwood has no new single in the Top 50. Does country radio figure Taylor Swift is such a pop culture juggernaut at this point they don’t need anyone else? Crikey mate….

We rip Jason Aldean “for not writing his hits”,but George Strait is a “Master interpretor”. Now im not comparing these artists, but I think we sometimes put too much stock in artists writing their songs.
Yes i much prefer artists that do,but still want to hear a good song no matter who wrote. This is a big reason LBT needs outside writers. Talented band lacking top material. “Bring it on home” was by far their best single, and hence wasnt written by the group.
A big complaint of Nashville is the writing is to insular. There are so many great songs by “fringe artists or classic “americana” artists but these artist always seem to have to record a steele/wiseman track. Its the biz but all writers have throwaway material and these up and comers tend to get the lesser material with the Rascal Flatts of the world getting the best hits.

The last time I know of that Bill Anderson and Taylor Swift were in the same place was when she was introduced and played at one of his shows in 2004. Time sure flies
