ASCAP Honors Alan Jackson and Dave Berg with Songwriting Awards
- Last night’s 46th annual ASCAP Country Music Awards honored Reba McEntire with the Golden Note Award, which is presented to songwriters, composers and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones. Alan Jackson won songwriter/artist of the year honors for his hits “A Woman’s Love” and “Small Town Southern Man.” Dave Berg took the songwriter of the year honors for several different hits and Rachel Thibodeau earned country song of the year for “Good Directions.”
- At the awards show Brooks & Dunn shared the story of a prank they pulled on Reba McEntire in the early ’90s.
In 1994, Reba started a prank war by throwing a pie in Kix’s face. In retaliation, Brooks & Dunn had a stink bomb explode on her while she was switching stages in the middle of a performance.
And, evidently, these were not just normal stink bombs. One of these smelly things made Travis Tritt throw up earlier.
Reba, smelling like something similar to rancid eggs, walked through the crowd to get back to the main stage.
Needless to say, her fans had an interesting reaction to the smell.

- The new Kenny Chesney album is available for streaming on iHeartMusic.com.
- Ashlie Kolb interviewed Chad Warrix and David Tolliver of Halfway to Hazard for the eleventh episode of Nashville at Nite. They talk about the formation of the duo and take digs at Tim McGraw’s fashion style. On the subject of his fancy Italian shirts, Tolliver says, “They don’t look like a man should wear them. They look like blouses.” Nice.
- NashvilleGab has a glimpse at the new Taylor Swift dolls.
- LeAnn Rimes scored a starring role in a new Lifetime movie based on a book by Norah Roberts called Northern Lights.
- C. Eric Banister explains what the Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison – Legacy Edition album encompasses in his review of the new CD/DVD combo.
This new Legacy Edition presents for the first time both shows in their entirety, including introductions and announcements from disc jockey Hugh Cherry. Also included are three performances by Carl Perkins, four by the Statler Brothers and two more duets between Cash and Carter. With the exception of the songs by the supporting acts, the second show duplicates the first in song list, but weariness can be heard in Cash’s voice and much of the fire from the first show is tempered.
- Songwriter Jim Collins comments on his success in a brief Q&A with The Tennessean’s Cindy Watts.
- Alex Woodard debuted two videos last week from his recently released self-titled album. “Reno” features Alex with Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek fame on vocals and fiddle and “There Is No More Time To Waste” features fellow singer and San Diegan Dawn Mitchsele on vocals.
- Robert Earl Keen is offering mp3’s from one of his concerts for free. From his website: “All songs recorded live at the Marfa Ballroom in Marfa, Texas in January 2008. We recommend listening to them in order, as they tell a cool story, as only REK can tell.” (via Galleywinter)
- Watch the video premier for Randy Rogers Band’s “In My Arms Instead.” The ending has a special twist that’ll be easy to predict for those of you who have read the track-by-track explanation for the band’s new album. Good stuff.

Its nice to see that Joey + Rory will be getting massive audience exposure via the free download through i-Tunes. The question is whether it will help sell their full album later this month? Can’t hurt though…
On a related note the new single from the re-configured Bomshel is supposed to be hitting radio this week and its also titled “Cheater, Cheater”. I wonder how often the Top 60 country singles charts feature two different songs with the same title? CURB has put many Bomshel singles out to radio over the last couple of years but none ever gained traction. Like Amy Dalley I would expect them to be released from CURB if “Cheater, Cheater” doesn’t do well at radio.

I’m assuming it’s the same song, since one of the Bomshel people supposedly cowrote the Joey+Rory version.

Not country, but probably the best neo-soul singer out there Nikka Costa released a new album today too:

It is the same song. Bomshel already attempted the song, and it failed, so it seems they’re tying again. I personally have heard both versions and I much prefer J+R’s version. Rory did co-write the song…

Stephen, if that is true it would mean two different versions of the same song would be on the charts at the same time! Apart from the Trisha vs. LeAnn duel over “How Can I Live Without You” I can’t think of too many other situations like this. Hmmm, I suspect this may interfere with the Bomshel single release and especially with the Joey + Rory version of “Cheater, Cheater” being featured on i-Tunes this very week. It seems Kristy O. and Kelley just can’t catch a break….
Stormy, neo-soul? You do have broad tastes in music. If you haven’t done it already, then be sure to download the temporary free MP3 song from Kimber Sparks at Country Weekly’s website as I’d like your opinion. Bill Chamber’s production is highly evident and elevates the song.

Try it Stormy/Whiskey, you’ll like it! (lol)

More than likely, Curb Records is putting out the song to capitalize on J&R’s noteriety on the song. While it probably won’t affect their single w/radio, it will give both of them more royalties as they co-wrote it.

Matt, I saw the Bomshel gals perform live back in late July and at that concert they announced the mid October radio date for “Cheater, Cheater”, so they had planned its release long before the Joey + Rory version. Kristy O. wanted to give me a radio DJ CD single version at that time but her manager wouldn’t let her as the place was crawling with LA CURB employees. Darn…..
Chris, thanks for clarifying that matter. Until the discussion on this thread I didn’t know they were the same song. Sheesh…

Rick,
I doubt Joey+Rory would’ve released it as a single if they didn’t get the OK from Kristy O to record it, given that they’re all friends. So somethings not right…

Rory wrote the song with Kristy O., so him and his wife can sing it if they want to, I’m sure.
Writers of the song:
R. L. Feek, J. M. Feek, Kristy Osmonson, Wynn Varble

Whoops, I didn’t notice that Joey also co-wrote, my bad.

Just wanted to comment on one of the songs the ASCAP honored Dave Berg for writing since it wasn’t mentioned in your recap.
“It’s Good To Be Us” recorded by Bucky Covington! While we know that you don’t favor Bucky because he doesn’t write ALL of his songs but please give him a little credit for being good at picking which ones to record.
